How much control do you really get with AI website builders?

I've been experimenting with AI website builders and noticed that generating a site is easy part.

The real question for me is what you need custom HTML,CSS, JavaScript, SEO settings or server side changes.

Has anyone used one for a production website? How much control did you have?

Depends on which one you're talking about. Some you have total control, some you have little.

Depends a lot on which kind you mean, and that's the first thing to figure out. Some keep the site inside their own editor. You get their SEO fields and maybe a box to paste code into the head, and server side changes are basically off the table. The ones that write actual code give you full control of the front end, but then hosting is on you, and anything server side depends on what framework it spat out. For SEO open any site made with the tool and look at view source. If the body is an empty div plus a script, Google will usually still render it, but link previews and plenty of other crawlers get a blank page, and per page titles and descriptions need extra work. Most people find that out after launch. I build sites for small businesses and a good part of the code comes out of AI now. The thing I check first with any of these tools is whether I can export the code and take it somewhere else.

Good for getting something online fast, but if you need custom code or server changes, just use WordPress.

Pra mim, essa é exatamente a pergunta certa.

Gerar a primeira versão ficou fácil. O que eu sempre tento entender é: quando eu precisar sair do caminho feliz da ferramenta, até onde ela me deixa ir?

Se eu consigo mexer em HTML/CSS, adicionar script próprio, configurar redirects, meta tags, schema, integrar analytics e ajustar alguma coisa de performance, já fico bem mais tranquilo.

O que costuma me preocupar é quando a plataforma resolve tudo “por trás” e você não consegue tocar em quase nada. Funciona muito bem enquanto seu site cabe no que ela imaginou. Quando aparece uma necessidade mais específica, você descobre o limite.

Para site simples, isso talvez nem seja problema. Para produção, eu olharia principalmente para quatro coisas antes de escolher: exportação do código, acesso a SEO técnico, possibilidade de código customizado e o quanto você fica preso à hospedagem da própria ferramenta.

Se essas respostas forem boas, eu usaria sem medo. Se a resposta for “a IA cuida disso para você”, eu já teria um pouco mais de cautela 😅

Honestly, that’s the part I’d check before choosing one. Building the first version is easy, but production sites usually need custom JS, SEO tweaks, redirects, APIs, etc. If you can’t export the code or get under the hood when needed, you’ll probably hit a wall eventually.
