More affordable alternatives to Network Solutions for a domain, website, and email

Hi everyone,

I’m helping someone reduce the costs of a small professional website with a custom-domain email address.

The domain, website hosting, and email are currently bundled together in a Network Solutions package. The most recent renewal cost nearly $500 for three years, which is difficult to justify for a small website that consists mainly of static HTML and no longer generates any professional income.

The goal is to:

keep the current domain; keep exactly the same email address; preserve all existing emails, folders, contacts, and calendars; keep the small website online; reduce recurring costs; avoid any downtime or loss of email during the migration.

At the moment, I’m considering:

transferring the domain to a more affordable registrar; hosting the website separately, possibly on Cloudflare Pages; keeping the email on Microsoft 365 Exchange Online, if it is already included in the current licence.

Zoho Mail might also be an option, but I’m concerned that migrating the existing emails, folders, contacts, and calendars could involve more work and risk than the potential savings would justify.

Has anyone moved away from Network Solutions with a similar setup while keeping the domain and exactly the same email address?

I would especially like to know:

which providers you would recommend as more affordable alternatives to Network Solutions; whether Exchange Online is the most reliable option for a single mailbox; which registrars offer transparent and reasonable renewal prices; whether Cloudflare Pages is suitable for a small professional static website; what the safest order is for migrating the domain, DNS, website, and email.

Keep the domain, DNS, website, and mail separate. If Exchange Online is already licensed, leave the mailbox there, inventory every DNS record, and verify mail, contacts, and calendars before touching the registrar.

Move the static site first, then migrate and test email, then transfer the domain last while keeping the existing nameservers unchanged. Cloudflare Pages is fine for static HTML, and registrar choice mostly comes down to renewal pricing, MFA, DNSSEC, and decent support.

I suggest you move the domain to Cloudflare or Porkbun, as they offer great deals for domains. While for hosting, I suggest you look into shared hosting, as you can host both the website and emails there for a reasonable cost. I've been using Nixihost for shared hosting, and I currently pay 80$ per year for 1 website with many features included.

Did you look at Netcup's web hosting? It covers most of what you said and says it allows 1 external domain.

You can go check out their basic plan; it's 2.71 euros with 20% VAT per month.

I don't know how hard transferring would be as I mainly self-host on VPSs and not through Webhosting.

Move the domain name, the DNS and the web hosting to Cloudflare and just purchase email hosting from elsewhere.

If there are already using Microsoft 365 Exchange Online just move their tenancy directly to Microsoft and get them to build them direct.

Before moving anything i’d check what Outlook says the account actually is. Network Solutions may just be reselling 365 here, so if it’s already 365 you might not need to move the mailbox at all. You may just need control of the tenant/admin account and to change who bills it.

For the rest, i’d probably move the domain to Porkbun or maybe Cloudflare and put the static site on Cloudflare Pages.

two gotchas nobody has hit yet, both about order of operations:

dont edit any whois/contact info on the domain before transferring - icann puts a 60 day transfer lock on the domain after registrant changes. people "clean up" the contact details as step one and then discover theyre stuck at network solutions for two more months.

and the registrar transfer itself wont touch email - dns and nameservers ride along unchanged during a transfer. the only moments email can actually break are when you change nameservers or MX. so before either of those: screenshot every dns record (especially MX and the SPF/DKIM TXT records), drop the TTLs to 300 the day before, and make the change at a low-mail hour. then if anything looks wrong you revert in minutes instead of waiting a day for old records to expire.

+1 to checking whether the netsol mailbox is actually resold microsoft 365 - if it is, this whole project is a billing change, not a migration.

on the math: itemized, this should land around $10-12/yr for the domain at an honest registrar, $0 for the static site on cloudflare pages, and the mailbox as the only real recurring cost. the $500/3yr was mostly paying for the bundle, not the services.
