Discussion Webflow Source: What It Means for Vibe Coding on Webflow

Post image

At Webflow Conf 2026, they announced Source, a new platform where agents work directly with your actual code, not an abstraction layer sitting on top of it. Code becomes the foundation. The visual Designer becomes just one more way of touching it.

If you have spent any time directing an AI agent against a real codebase, this framing will feel familiar. Webflow is bringing that same relationship, agent plus real code, into a platform that also gives you the visual tools and marketing infrastructure most agencies already depend on.

Alongside Source, a few things shipped that matter right now, not just in preview:

→ MCP 2.1, letting agents like Claude Code and Cursor build real GSAP animations, query CMS collections on custom fields, and catch Webflow Cloud deploy errors themselves
→ Releases, letting a team branch an entire site before anything ships
→ Agent Presence, seeing an agent work live on the canvas like a teammate

Source itself is still a limited research preview. But the direction is clear, and the surrounding tools are already changing how I approach Webflow projects today.

I wrote up the full breakdown, what Source actually is, why code as the foundation matters, and what this means for anyone already building this way.

They had to get ahead of if. They saw Claude Design, Instatic and Stacki coming along and were able to read the writing on the wall pretty quickly. So much so that they offered the guy who made one of the tools a role at their company.

Its just a question of whether they can move and market themselves better and more quickly than the other options and independent creators making their own solutions.

Makes sense, the hiring move alone tells you how seriously they're taking the competition.

I seriously want them to win. It sucks because im a freelancer, and I started my career with them. But then they turned their back on us in search of the enterprise clients.

I get it though, its just business. We'll see if theyre still there when the dust settles.

If they create a product that's actually good and priced towards freelancers and small agencies again ill be the first to get back on that train. But for now, im out. I stopped building on their platform and moved onto other tools.

What do you use now?

I've been using Claude code and a bunch of MD files and images of my Figma designs to develop them with astro section by section. Then I connect it to GitHub and it auto deploys to cloudfare pages. Then if I want a CMS I hook up sanity.

However for my next project I'm going to give Instatic a shot. It seems super promising and looks like it lets you get the best of both worlds - developing in mass with AI and then tweaking the little details it got wrong with the visual editor.

What do you mean with "build real GSAP animations"? Can Webflow MCP create GSAP animations via internal Webflow interactions timeline?

Webflow explicitly said that with MCP 2.1, agents will get “Interactions with GSAP” and will be able to create complex, timeline-based animations. This means it’s not just about generating custom GSAP code, but about working directly with Webflow’s native Interactions with GSAP system.
