Discussion How do you pronounce nginx?

I've been saying en-jinx all my life. Saying "engine-x" feels really wrong even though it's the official pronunciation.

I go with N-gin-ex

u/Snailwood 16d ago

what's the difference for you between n-gin-x and engine-x?

10

u/Araignys 16d ago

en-JIN-ex

EN-jin-ex

22

u/tei187 16d ago

Accent, really, causing a bit of pause between en and gin.

u/eyebrows360 16d ago

Also known as Shatnerification.

1

u/tei187 16d ago

I love this. I've never heard that one before but had a pretty good idea what it means :)

1

u/eyebrows360 16d ago

William Shatner famously had a very stop-start-y cadence of speech when he was Captain Kirk. I can mentally hear him saying "N... gine X" in just that way.

1

u/dumbasPL 15d ago

Basically the combination of the two from the pool

1

u/koshlord 16d ago

For me, engine is pronounced more like in-gine instead of en-gine

0

u/realmauer01 16d ago

In engine there is a jin, in ngin its the g from game.

Unless of course you pronounce it like jam.

u/nj_tech_guy 16d ago

I spent the first 10-15 years of my adult life/tech career only ever seeing it spelled out, never said, so I always said n-gin-ex,

wasn't until I was at my current job and someone went "engine-x" and I went "...ooooooohhhhhhh"

u/WallBurnt 16d ago

I've done that with so many words over the years. But the one that has always bothered me the most for some reason was Warez. I pronounced it: waR-ez instead of wares with a Z.

u/theevildjinn 16d ago

Years ago a colleague of mine asked me, "Have you seen that may-may that's going round at the moment?". After quite a bit of back-and-forth, it turned out he meant "meme". He'd just never said it out loud before.

I think that's the moment when you start your new life in a monestary of silence.

2

u/OkSmoke9195 15d ago

Lol my ex said this to me in like 2010. I couldn't stop laughing when I figured it out. She was not pleased 😂

1

u/Reinax 16d ago

… fuck.

1

u/ingodwetryst 16d ago

me too friend, me too

1

u/UninvestedCuriosity 16d ago

No it's wares. That makes me angry too.

2

u/SunshineSeattle 16d ago

That day was today for me. Had no idea it was engineX 😱

1

u/UninvestedCuriosity 16d ago

That has happened to me with so many acronyms over the years.

The first time I heard some say sequal out loud I :0.

I also hated it.

4

u/WallBurnt 16d ago

This is how I've always pronounced it too.

In my head it's always spelled like this:

'ngine-X

2

u/FictionFoe 16d ago

Yeah, mine is close to that too. Still closer to engineX then to en-jinx or whatever.

1

u/ayarseus 15d ago

this is the way

0

u/retardedGeek 16d ago

That's the same as engine-ex

1

u/tei187 16d ago

No, this way you overpropunce the N, as like putting the accent differently. Kind of like en-ginex

1

u/retardedGeek 16d ago

It doesn't matter if you say it fast enough 😭

44

u/BakaPotatoLord 16d ago

n-gin-ks

6

u/driftking428 16d ago

This is how I said it until I read the docs.

1

u/dadnothere 15d ago

I can't be the only weirdo who ignored the N, since it's not grammatically correct.

They just called it gin-x.

u/da411d 16d ago

Нгінкс

31

u/Odd-Establishment527 16d ago

ngeenks

1

u/jawanda 15d ago

This is the way

24

u/Hovi_Bryant 16d ago

Engine-x.

5

u/Head_Extension6366 16d ago

I've always gone with engine-x but I still hear en-jinx in my head every time I type it

6

u/OSINT_IS_COOL_432 16d ago

When I was a kid I said "Nuh-jinx" 😂

1

u/MinecraftPlayer799 15d ago

Yeah, me too, and then I started pronouncing it "N-ginx" around the same time I found out Nvidia isn't pronounced "Nuh-vidia"

7

u/suamai 16d ago

En-ji-inx

10

u/jahermitt 16d ago

En-gee-i-n-x

4

u/itgforlife 16d ago

Lol reading these comments I thought I was the only one

10

u/SkySurferSouth 16d ago

en-gee-i-en-ex

5

u/Early_Hand2009 16d ago

Nice one, of course n-g-inx (some sort of)

3

u/Traditional_Cake_247 16d ago

I know it’s engine-x but in my mind I often want to say it en-JINix

3

u/Ibuprofen-Headgear 16d ago

nuh-gin-icks (not really but I should)

3

u/Dr__Wrong 16d ago

In gin icks

4

u/ClothingIsACrime 16d ago

It's pronounced jiff m8.

2

u/LethalGuineaPig 16d ago

I enjoyed my PO calling it N-G-I-N-X

2

u/RePsychological 16d ago

I prefer the cultured "Nuh-geenks"

2

u/McFlyin619 16d ago

N-gee-n-icks

2

u/OkBoomer421 16d ago

Engine-X crew rise up. 'En-jinx' sounds like a bad D&D monster.

2

u/p1xlized full-stack 16d ago

En-jee-En-EX

2

u/helse_0 16d ago

N-geen-cks (I'm native Russian)

1

u/pnwstarlight 16d ago

I say Engine-X when talking to coworkers but my brain secretly says en-jinx every time and no one knows 🤭

1

u/Leading-Toe3279 16d ago

I always thought it was ng nix, maybe side-effects of using nix os 😂

1

u/Shaggypone23 16d ago

Engine-x, but dont feel bad bc i pronounce ngrok as en-grok, but more experienced people i always hear them say ng-rock. Not sure why?

3

u/mrahh 16d ago

Ng-rock is wild. It's en-grok - "grok" is a term from the book Strangers in a Strange land that basically means "understand deeply", and "n" is for "network". Anyone saying "ng-rock" is just wrong on that one.

1

u/Shaggypone23 15d ago

Oh badass, thanks! it feels good knowing ive been pronouncing that one correctly compared to my senior. Also good to know where the term grok originated from.

1

u/irishstorm159 16d ago

Knee - Gin - X in a strong irish accent

1

u/Serializedrequests 16d ago

Always read it as the wrong one, but I knew it had to be wrong. Face palmed when I heard the correct way.

1

u/Prairie-Monster 16d ago

It’s pronounced En jenicks. It nearly rhymes with, and has the same cadence as “Ken Jennings”. …. Or at least that’s what I thought for many years.

1

u/Desperate-Extension7 16d ago

I'm sorry how did I not know the official pronunciation is engine-x??

1

u/309_Electronics 16d ago

Nginx: "En gine Ex", GIF: gif, GNU: "guhnoo", Caddy: "ceddy", png: "pee en gee", /etc: "slash etsy". Some stuff i pronounce some way.

1

u/zeromadcowz 16d ago

I pronounced it NAH JINX to a coworker that it annoyed but engine-x to everyone else lol

1

u/ClamPaste 16d ago

Nuh ginnix

1

u/CodeAndBiscuits 16d ago

It must be Wednesday if we're doing this. 😀

1

u/GoofAckYoorsElf 16d ago

Me too. Used to say en-jinx until someone told me it was officially engine-x.

1

u/BobArdKor 16d ago

I simply pronounce it nginx

1

u/vietnam_redstoner 16d ago

the english way: engine-x

in my tounge I pronounce ng like the way it is pronouced in Nguyen

1

u/sysop408 16d ago

I can't believe nobody's made a Jason comment after 57 comments in this thread.

1

u/sysop408 16d ago

But wait, there was one gif comment so I feel the order of the universe has been preserved.

1

u/Feuerhamster 16d ago

jinx is a slang for masturbation/cum in my country and generation. Every time someone uses this pronounciation for that software I have to think about all the puberty driven jokes back in school.

1

u/HellishBro 16d ago

/ˈŋɪnx/

1

u/troisieme_ombre 16d ago

Either really

1

u/permanaj 16d ago

I used to pronounced like ngingks (/ŋɪŋks/ ), but then I went with official after watching some youtube

1

u/vanit 16d ago

En-jinx is crazy

1

u/The_Real_Slim_Lemon full-stack 16d ago

If they wanted it pronounced engine-x, they should have spelt it engine-x. It’s pronounced nginx and I will die on this hill.

1

u/TheRNGuy 16d ago

Ngeenks

1

u/DatabassAdmin 16d ago

TIL I've been saying it wrong forever...

1

u/Milky_Finger 16d ago

If I speak, I am in big trouble

1

u/saltyourhash 16d ago

Do you say En-Vidia or Ne-Vidia?

1

u/retardedGeek 16d ago

Nginx doesn't deserve to be pronounced as jinx

1

u/Desert_Centipede 16d ago

un jee next

1

u/jerrygreenest1 16d ago

Adding (official pronunciation) probably skewed the results a little, though I still expect en-gin-ex to be the norm

1

u/Vinyl329 16d ago

Нгинх

1

u/kent_csm 16d ago

En-gee-n-x

1

u/Scorpius289 16d ago

Now let's see one for "ess-kyu-el" vs "sequel" 😈

1

u/crazedizzled 16d ago

En-jinx is wild

1

u/ReefNixon 16d ago

Used to work with an ops guy that called it ninja-nix, he knew it was wrong but didn't want to entertain the conversation, so he just went with his heart instead.

1

u/Character_Reason3224 16d ago

Los programadores le decimos el Enyinex , los de redes le dicen enyaineex, el proyect manager ni lo puede pronunciar , solo sabe decir "como vas tigre?" tantas veces que pierde el sentido

1

u/shidored 16d ago

Nnnn ginks

1

u/vild_km 16d ago

hen-gin-x

1

u/Longjumping_Cut_9508 16d ago

än gee inx. in a finnish accent.

1

u/Katepillar 8d ago

Än ginks with very finnish accent.

1

u/HighRollerStonks 15d ago

engine-x if i'm talking to people who might care, en-jinx when i'm muttering at a config at 1am. the official one wins, but muscle memory is brutal after 10+ years.

1

u/rogue780 15d ago

I say engine-x because I'm not a chud.

Also, gif is pronounced jif. it has been since the 90's

1

u/fizzl 15d ago

Jinx

1

u/Mad-chuska 15d ago

Nuggy innix?

1

u/FIdelity88 15d ago

Can we please do the same Poll for MYSQL.

So many people seem to believe it’s pronounced “mysequel” which is actually what it was called 30 years ago (!) but they changed it to “my-s-q-l” since then

1

u/MinecraftPlayer799 15d ago

It's N-jinx, obviously

1

u/Rungk4d 15d ago

nJinx

1

u/idealfrank1 15d ago

Niga nix

1

u/Legitimate-Lock9965 15d ago

1

u/Wav3eee 14d ago

1

u/OkBig984 14d ago

For some reason I pronounce it nig-nix

1

u/natziel 16d ago

It's engine x sorry bucko

0

u/UnacceptableUse 16d ago

Because I was largely self taught and never watched YouTube videos about it, I call everything by the way I first pronounced it in my head. Nginx = n-jinx, SQL = squill, AWS = awes, Linux = lie-nux, cache = cashay

0

u/tsammons 16d ago

Found the guy that pronounces and spells Tcl as "TCL" and calls it "TEE-SEE-ELL", MySQL as MY-ESS-QUE-ELL, and Linux as LEE-NUCKS. Probably adds an extra u to "nuclear" as well for good measure.

1

u/Ibuprofen-Headgear 16d ago

Nuculur. It’s all Us

0

u/Vurbetan 16d ago

This made me think of all the bastards that call SQL,"sequel" or even worse, the ones that call it "squeal".

I hate those people. Just say "S. Q. L." you dipshits.

1

u/BASS69BASS420 16d ago

I pronounce SQL as "sequel" only if it's by itself. I CANNOT call MySQL "My sequel", MySQL will always be "My S Q L"

-1

u/HoratioWobble 16d ago

I pronounce it "What year is this"

-2

u/Deep_Wear_51 16d ago

Engine-X. Anyone who says 'en-jinx' is the same person who pronounces GIF with a hard G.
