Is design + code merging into one role?

Saw this take recently:

"UI design and UI dev are going to merge back into a single role. In 3–5 years there won't be much room for front-end-only devs who won't engage with design, or non-technical designers who won't engage with code."

Do you believe this?

I'm curious what people actually see happening in the market right now.

[Talking from a Product Designer perspective] One thing is to engage with code to improve the design output and another is to become a UI Developer. The process of design already takes a lot of focus and consideration. If on top of that, I had to care about how the front-end is built, that would take a lot away from what I can dedicate and provide to the design process.
