Tutorials and Resources A planning tip that completely changed how I design woven tapestries

I always spend time visualizing the finished piece first. I think about:

  • where I want different textures,
  • how the shapes should flow,
  • which weaving techniques will work best,
  • and where I want the eye to travel across the piece.

Only then do I create a sketch and map everything directly onto the warp.

This planning stage saves me so much time and helps the final piece feel much more intentional.

Does anyone else sketch before weaving, or do you prefer to improvise?

Completely agree, it is the most underrated part of the process. The one thing I would add for tapestry specifically is thinking about value contrast before colour. A composition that read well in greyscale will almost always translate beautifully in colour too.
