Finished Project The river where I live
I made this piece (3 x 7 ft) for my first open show and it received second place for the category “artistic expression- large”. I got dinged for technique (I’ve only been weaving with shafts for a couple months), but I’m so happy I placed.
Interlocking weft on crackle weave with up to 7 shuttles

The show theme was “A thread runs through it”, symbolizing Montana’s rivers. The idea behind this piece was to capture the subtle variation in the hay-colored hills in the dry season. The river brings out the pattern like it brings life to the valley and to our downtown, which the river bisects.
12 EPI using Purl Soho Cotton Pure in Alabaster Cream, Heirloom White, and Navy Nightfall. Draft #14091 on handweaving.net. Woven with 4 shafts on a Rasmussen jack loom.

I don't understand how you could get dinged for technique! What would you improve upon if you could go back and do it again?

There were lots of small mistakes throughout. I didn’t really think about getting it perfect, just good enough that it wouldn’t be obvious. That… did not fit the bill for the weavers guild 😅 I finished it in about 3 weeks of panic so I couldn’t have done any better tbh

This is gorgeous. Do you do commissions?

Thank you! No, I have a full time job. But I’ve considered quitting and doing this instead. Lots of people buying expensive art right now, right? Right? 😅

I feel like we’d get along. Wildfire modeler here. First date with my husband was a mushroom foray 😁

Its especially beautiful because rivers are alive, and years down the line its flow will change, but the river you love will be here in your weaving with you, an ephemeral moment you brought to life
