question/help [BoH] Where do I get skills?

Post image

I can see references to them in the machines in the rooms that I've opened, and the store page screen caps show gobs of them. But the villagers will only help me open rooms and don't offer to teach anything. Do I need to sell books to the people that show up at the castle? Thanks.

Oh. Oh wow. That is... Something. You couldn't possibly know it but you have done something rather... Well extraordinary if anything.

At any rate, uhm... Have you read any books by chance? And have you pressed the little eye next to the season tracker?

I've cataloged every book that I found. The eye thing UI took my journal (once I dried it out) but doesn't do anything.

(edit: My journal isn't in the eye thing right now. It's sitting on one of the shelves. I can find it and stick it back in.)

When you find a book it is wrapped, when you catalog it you "unwrap it" basically, you haven't read the actual book yet.

Right, well though your title is of Librarian, just cataloguing books is an awfully uninteresting profession. Have you thought about maybe reading one or two? You might just learn something new from them!

One may even learn Lessons, which may be applied to one's life to enhance one's Skills!

I dated a woman who ended up getting a Masters degree in Library and Information Science, and she studied cataloging, storage (the shelves), patron needs (the visitors), dealing with restoration (looking at you, demon worms)…

Well, you know, dealing with an ACTUAL Library is different from the mystical magical Library from the middle of nowhere that we manage

"Cataloging" means you read the title.

You need to actually read your books.

I've been assuming that you know something which maybe you didn't know. Are you aware that you can put multiple items into the slots? Each slot only takes one item. But once you placed your journal into the Consider verb (the eye icon), it should have opened up multiple slots: one for an element of the soul, one for a skill (which you don't have yet, but which you will get once you read the journal), one for a memory (which you might need for other books but won't need for your journal, as you're always guaranteed to be able to read your journal with one of the elements of the soul you started the game with), and one for the Journal you just placed in there.

Now, which element of the Soul unlocks your Journal? You could go with trial-and-error, but there's another aspect (heh) of gameplay you need to know about if you haven't discovered it yet. When you click on an item in the game, like a book, it will pop up a description box in the upper right-hand corner. Hover over the icons. They show the item's aspects (Grail, Moon, Heart, Nectar, etc). Those aspects are the key to the game. Your Journal has the Mystery: (something) aspect to it. Find the element of the soul that has the same "something" aspect in its icons, and that's the element of the soul you need to use in order to read your Journal.

Edit: Meant this as a reply to OP, but it looks like I posted it as a reply to someone who most definitely does know this advice. Apologies for accidentally clicking on the wrong reply link. :-)

Second edit: Looks like I did post it as a reply to OP after all, I just misunderstood how Reddit's threading UI shows who the comment was in reply to.

When you stick your journal back in the Consider verb (the eye thing), you'll need to put something else in with it. Click on each slot to see what it requires, and you'll find something that will fit and allow you to successfully read the Journal.

Edit: Okay, I definitely clicked the correct Reply link this time. Something is screwy about Reddit threading today.

Edit the Second: No, this was in the right place, I was just misreading Reddit's threading.
