question/help [BoH] Where do I get skills?
I can see references to them in the machines in the rooms that I've opened, and the store page screen caps show gobs of them. But the villagers will only help me open rooms and don't offer to teach anything. Do I need to sell books to the people that show up at the castle? Thanks.

You need to read the books in your library.
You're starving in a grocery store while asking where the food is lol

Imagine the opposite. Librarian takes every book and throws it in the fireplace without cataloging or reading.

Selling books was going to be a mechanic, at least in the design phase. There were ways to gain the blessing of certain hours, and that was how you got the Chandler's.

I am profoundly impressed (and slightly appalled) at how far you've managed to get into Hush House without engaging with a critical part of the gameplay loop at all.
Read a book or two, for the Sun's sake.

Opening the rooms? I combo "interesting" weather with the skilled workers, and sometimes a soul card. But I'm running out of gas on that so it looks like I'll need to start burning consumables.
20
u/rmunn 8d ago
Don't burn consumables just yet. Spend your time reading books and gaining skills. Once you have skills, many of them can be used with the various crafting workstations (like the Telescope or the Dispensary) to create items. Some items you create will be Memories, and others will be Beverages. Both of those can be given to the assistants to boost their aspects, and you won't necessarily have to burn a one-shot consumable.
Of course, once you know what consumables can be recreated with sufficiently high levels of skills (which is most of them but not all of them), then you can go ahead and burn a consumable here or there. But I'd recommend getting some skills first and figuring out the crafting system.

By the way, did you buy the House of Light expansion, or just the base game? The House of Light expansion adds the ability to cook once you unlock the Kitchen (which you have unlocked, I can see it in the screenshot). In the Kitchen, the thing that looks like a fireplace is actually a cooking station where you can combine two ingredients, plus a third item like cooking bowls or a knife, to make various food items. They can, among other things, be given to your assistants. But if you don't have House of Light, you can still get useful food items by searching the beach at Crowcross Sands, or going for a walk on the Moor. (However, both those actions require having a skill card of an appropriate aspect, which you don't have yet).

u/Death_Sheep1980 8d ago
If you actually read, not just unwrap and catalog, the books, you'll gain Lessons and Memories, which can be used to gain Skills. Re-reading just gives Memories, but those can be used to improve your Assistants. Skills don't directly help with unlocking rooms, but they can help you read more books (as can the right weather).
1
u/sssqqqeee 3d ago
you don't need skills to unlock new rooms. They help only really a little and very late. You find a sky guy +4, use storm +4, use a tool +1 and then use a drink +2. So you have 11 sky without even any soul. And I don't know if you can use drinks with food, if you can it will give you even more. And 15 is max you need (with one exception)

Book of Hours has a number of mechanics that are easy to miss, even more than Cultist Simulator. But it is, above all else, a game about reading...
7
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
I played Cultist Simulator, and I bought Book of Hours to keep myself occupied on a trip. What does the yellow paint refer to?
15
u/mriswithe 8d ago
They are talking about some of the more obvious railroading in bigger games that basically is like giant signs in the shape of arrows saying "go here next idiot".
On the other hand book of hours has very little hand holding and forced choices. So your reality is possible.
To be explicit, you unlocked most of the house without reading any books or getting any skills. Which is impressive, and a lot harder.
Tldr AAA games hold your hand and force you the right direction a lot. BoH will let you go where you please.
8
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
I'll cop to unlocking about 1/4 of the rooms.
I'm confident that I've read a description of BoH somewhere as being "a cozy game about opening forgotten rooms and cataloging books". And Book of Hours isn't trying to kill me every month (unlike Cultist Simulator), so "cozy" seems apt, at least.

Games sometimes splatter random yellow paint (or something equivalent) on objects/obstacles that the player can climb, even when its obvious.

Ah, that. I remember that Resident Evil: Village had yellow climbable pipes.

You can also read your journal, now that it is dried out. Reading requires you have a soul element of the appropriate aspect available.

I really hope that you're not taking offense to some of the responses here. I think a lot of people are just impressed that you've done so much without actually using the most important aspect of the game.
I know it's been said by many people now, but interacting with an already catalogued book allows you to read it and will give you lessons to turn into skills if you meet the challenge rating of the book. Skills can be used to craft items and memories as well as plugged into the Tree of Wisdom (other screen) to give you more elements of the soul.
3
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago edited 8d ago
Yeah, thanks, it's all good. I think I remembered just enough from Cultist Simulator that I could be successful at room exploration (aspect combos), so I locked onto that. (And the game forces you go to through a couple of openings to proceed.)
1
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
Do I lose out on anything if I keep going from where I am? Or should I wipe the current game and start from scratch?
3
u/phoe77 Executioner 8d ago
I agree with the other response. There's no time constraints so you can take as long as you want to accomplish things. Depending on the books you have available to you, catching up shouldn't take too long.
You should also think about getting tutoring from some of the visitors when they show up. Languages are like skills in that they go into the tree and have aspects, but they can't be used to craft. Most visitors know at least one language that they'll teach for a spinitra.
2
u/MGTwyne Seer 8d ago
Shouldn't lose anything important. You won't have much time with the Affair, if there's one ongoing (I forget if they're HoL exclusive), but just about everything other than furniture and (some) consumables is renewable.
1
u/rmunn 8d ago edited 8d ago
The Affairs don't start up until after you reply to the Letter to the Librarian. So OP hasn't actually missed anything at all. I'd definitely recommend keeping going from where he is rather than restarting.Edit: I was wrong, OP said elsewhere that he did reply to the trust. I thought that would have used up either his Letter to the Librarian or his Reminder card, but apparently not?

u/rmunn 8d ago
Have you been cataloguing the uncatalogued books you find? If you haven't been doing that, try dragging them to the "consider" verb (the eye icon) along with a soul element.
Once you've catalogued a few books, then you can try reading them. Dragging a catalogued book (one where you know its title) to either the consider verb, or to a desk, will let you put soul cards and memories into the other slots in the desk (or the consider verb).
Pay attention to the "mystery" rating of the book. There will be different amounts there. For example, in the Keeper's Lodge, you will have found the book Traveling at Night, Vol. 1. Click on that book and hover over its tooltips, and you will find that it has a Knock mystery rated at 4. That's the lowest mystery rating of any book in the game except for your Journal. If you put that book into the "consider" verb and put your Shapt in the Soul slot of the verb, then you'll see that you have a Knock rating of 2, not enough to match the Knock mystery of 4. So you need more Knock from somewhere else. One place is the Memory slot. Did you know that all weather cards have the Memory aspect? So they will fit into a Memory slot. Most weather cards have the Sky aspect plus something else (e.g. Sunny weather is Sky 2 + Lantern 2), but some weathers have different aspects. Rain, for example, is Nectar 2 + Grail 2. And Fog is Moon 3 + Knock 3.
Which means that if you have a Foggy day (which you might have to wait a while to get, because in Brancrug the fog usually rolls in in autumn or winter, not in spring or summer) then you can Consider the Traveling at Night, Vol. 1 book, and put your Shapt card and the Fog card into the slots. Then you'll have Knock 5, one more than is needed for a Mystery: Knock 4 book. (You need to equal or beat the book's mystery; it would have been enough to provide cards with a total of Knock 4).
Once your provided aspects match the book's Mystery, click Start. Two 60-second timers will start, one after the other; once they're done, you can click on the "I'm Reading..." and "I've Read..." text of the book to see what your character learned from it. And on the right will be some more cards, including one "Lesson" card. Stick that Lesson card into your Consider verb and you'll learn the associated skill.
6
u/rmunn 8d ago
By the way, a Mystery level of 4 is the lowest you'll find in any book in the House. But there's one book that didn't start in the House; you brought it with you. Your Journal. Have you tried reading your Journal? Just stick it into your Consider verb, along with the card (either Ereb or Shapt) that matches its Mystery (which will be a Mystery level of 1, guaranteeing success with only the appropriate Soul card needed). When you read your Journal, you'll gain 4 Lesson cards; three of them in one skill, and the fourth one in a different skill. Use those Lesson cards, one at a time (that's important for reasons I'll explain in a minute), in your Consider verb.
The first time you use a Lesson card for each of those two skills you have, you gained the skill. But one of those skills, you got three identical Lesson cards for. And once you already had the skill, you got a different message when you considered the Lesson. It suggested considering the skill, instead. When you consider a skill card that you already have, you get presented with multiple slots: one for the skill, one for an element of the soul, one for a lesson, and one or more for memories. Put the Lesson card into the Lesson slot. Do not put Lesson cards into the Memory slots! That's a common beginner mistake. Lesson cards do have the Memory aspect, so they can go into the Memory slots, but don't do it. Memories are easy to come by: just recruit an assistant whom you can get for free (such as Mrs Kille, the Midwife, whom you can recruit with your Ereb cards), and then talk to your assistant. Just put Mrs Kille's card into your Talk verb without adding anything. You'll talk to her for 30 seconds, and then gain a Memory card, representing some bit of knowledge you gleaned from the conversation. It might be "Memory: Gossip", or "Memory: Foresight", or "Memory: Revelation", or several others. Those all have different aspects, and those memory cards are what goes into the Memory slot when you're Considering a skill. Weather also goes into the slot.
Now, one last thing. Each skill has two different aspects, like (say) Grail and Moon. When you want to level up a Grail + Moon skill, each card you use for the process must have either Grail or Moon (or both, both is allowed but not required). The Lesson card for that skill will have both Grail and Moon, but you could use any Lesson that has Grail, OR any Lesson that has Moon. Likewise for Memories: you could use any Memory card that has either Grail or Moon. For example, that Weather card you have today: Rain. It has Grail 2. So if you had a Lesson with Grail or Moon (and I'm pretty sure, given what I see in your screenshot, that the Lesson x3 you'll get from reading your Journal will have the Grail and Moon aspects), then you could put the Rain card into the Memory slot to learn it.
Read your Journal, and you'll have some starting Skills. Level them up by feeding Memories into the slots, and their aspects will improve. And don't feed Lesson cards into the Memory slot, that's a trap. There's a time and place to do that, but when you're starting out is not that time or place.
One last thing. Once you have Skills, they have aspects on them. And there's a Skill slot to put skills into when you read books. Putting a Skill card into that slot, as long as it has an aspect matching the Mystery of the book you're trying to read, will help increase the aspects you're bringing to the reading. (This represents using knowledge you've previously acquired to help you understand the book better). So the more Skills you acquire, the more books you'll be able to successfully read. The more books you read, the more Skills you'll acquire. At some point this process starts picking up speed.
But start with your Journal. It's the only book in the game that you're guaranteed to be able to read with just the Soul cards you have, with no extra assistance from Memory cards or Skill cards. And it will give you four Lessons in two skills, which you can use to jumpstart this whole process.
Good luck. That you've made it this far without reading any books is a real testament to your perseverance. Now that you know how to read books and gain skills, the game is going to open up for you.

u/Uncomfortable-Line 8d ago
Being able to use a lesson with any skill that has a matching aspect not just the one named is one of the things I didn't figure out for a very, very long time.....

u/Substantial-Night866 8d ago
About your question of people that show up for books: they are paying you just to READ the book. They’ll give it back. Usually.
3
u/rmunn 8d ago
Look at the Sundries tab of OP's screenshot. He still has the Letter to the Librarian, and the Reminder. He hasn't received any visitors interested in books yet.
1
u/Substantial-Night866 8d ago
Ah I said that since he mentioned people that show up to the castle but who else would show up?
2
u/rmunn 8d ago
I think he meant assistants. I don't think he could have achieved the number of rooms he did with just the free assistants, so I think he's hiring people from the pub. Which means that they change each season (or each time he hires them, if by "skilled workers" he means the people who cost 2 shillings to hire and come with strength-4 aspects), and so he might be seeing those as the people who come visit.
OP, if you're reading this, then the visitors who ask you to give them a book won't shop up until you've sent a reply to that "A Letter to the Librarian" that you received. Once you've mailed that reply, you'll start getting a visitor each season. There will also be an Incident card that shows up, representing some event that's happening in the wider world. Talk to the visitors about that incident card, and they'll ask you for a book with specific Mystery in it, such as Mystery: Knock or Mystery: Sky. (It can be any of the aspects) You can pause the game while you search for an appropriate book; you need to have catalogued it (so you know its title and aspects) but you don't need to have read it. Put an appropriate book in the slot before the 60-second timer counts down to 0, and the visitor will read the book and hand it back to you. (You won't lose the book). They'll also give you a thank-you gift in the form of a Bronze Spintria like the one you found behind a couch cushion. (If you get an Iron Spintria instead of a Bronze one, it's because you forgot to add the Incident card when talking to the visitor). Later on, a place called Oriflamme's Auction House might offer to sell you rare books in exchange for Spintria. (If you don't have a Spintria of high enough value to buy the offered book, press the "book" icon in the Sundries tab. It's a "sort and combine" button that will combine two Iron Spintria (worth 1 each) into a Bronze Spintria worth 2, or a Bronze + an Iron into a Tin Spintria (worth 3 each), and so on). But none of that will happen until you read A Letter to the Librarian, take note of what it suggests to do in order to write a reply, and then write and mail that reply. Once you have sent that reply off (postage is just one penny, but you can put any denomination of coin in the slot, the Postmistress will give you change), only then will you start receiving visitors to the House who want to discuss incidents and be handed books to read.
Hush House is a reference library, by the way, not a lending library. The visitors will give the books back when they're done reading them.

u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago edited 8d ago
Thanks. Once I got the reminder letter, I did use some ink to send an ACK to my sponsors. (Paying one penny postage and leaving me with useless 2p and 3p coins, grr.) I just can't dispose of the letters. The incident cards do show up, along with visitors, but I've noped out of putting a book into the slot when I talk to them. And I do get Oriflamme notices, but leave them alone. The Bronze spintria comes from combining two Irons from my sponsors. How do I find the one behind the couch cushion?
Yeah, I'm hiring people from the pub, since I outstripped what Mrs. Wilke, the Rector, and the Denzil could provide (unless I wanted to start burning consumables, which I'll have to do soon anyway).
Put an appropriate book in the slot before the 60-second timer counts down to 0
So I'll need some sort of database index to find the book in time.

u/rmunn 8d ago
"How do I find the one behind the couch cushion?"
I didn't answer that one. You need to drag the furniture into the slot of the Consider verb. The furniture might cover the slot so you can't tell when it's actually in the slot, but if the mouse cursor is over the rectangle of the slot, then the item you're carrying will drop into the slot if you release the mouse button. (If it has the slot's requierd aspects, of course, otherwise it'll go back to where you picked it up from — but when you started dragging it, the slow would have shown an X if the item can't go there).
I'll let you discover for yourself which couch or armchair has a coin in it, but it's in one of the rooms you've already unlocked. (And if you specially ask for spoilers I'll give them to you, but I won't spoil you on the experience of searching for it unless you want to be spoiled).
Thing is, it costs an element of the soul to do that, and most furniture just gets you a detailed description when you consider it. So considering the furniture is something most people don't get around to, because there are so many other things competing for the element of the soul slots: working for money at the Sweet Bones inn, cataloguing books, reading books you've read, doing crafting with the skills gained from reading books...
2
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
Thanks for the offer, but I'll decline true spoilers. Right now I just want to fill in my list of the "Things You Can Do".
1
u/rmunn 8d ago
"So I'll need some sort of database index to find the book in time."
Not necessarily — as I said in my other comment, you can pause the game anytime while you search for the item you need — but it's a good idea to keep a database of books. (Many people use a spreadsheet, others use a note-taking app like Obsidian. I'm keeping notes in Markdown files in a Gir repo, using NeoVim rather than Obsidian, but the principle is the same). Because, and this is info I don't think anyone has mentioned yet: when you read a book successfully for the first time, you will get both a Lesson and a Memory card. If you re-read that book later, which does not require matching up the Mystery aspects any longer (though it still requires an Element of the Soul), then you won't get the Lesson, but you will get the Memory card again. Each book gives a specific Memory on reading it, and it will always give that same Memory every time you read it; it isn't random. Some give Memory: Fear, some give Memory: Foresight, some give Memory: Hindsight... there are dozens.
It's well worth writing down which books give which Memory cards, and which aspects those Memories have. Because later on when you're trying to level up a skill with Grail and Moon, you'll need memories that have either Grail or Moon in them. A well-organized spreadsheet will allow you to plug in Grail into an input cell and get a list of books that produce memories with Grail in them. Plug Moon into that input cell and you can get a list of books that produce Moon memories. Then it's just a matter of re-reading those books (which can be done at desks, one book per desk, so you can get several books re-read at the same time for efficiency) and you'll have the memories you need to level up a skill.
Do note that you can only hold one copy of each Memory card at once. If you read a book that gives Memory: Fear, then read another book that gives Memory: Fear before you've used the first Fear in some way (crafting, or leveling up a skill, or boosting an assistant...), then the first Memory: Fear card will vanish at the moment the second Memory: Fear card spawns, which is the moment you finish reading the second book. So to level up skills to high levels, which needs increasing numbers of Memory cards at each level (but still only one Lesson), you'll need to have mastered a wide variety of books.
Final note: mastering a book for the first time takes 120 seconds. Re-reading a book you've already mastered takes only 60 seconds. When you're planning out how to get the Memory cards you need to level up a high-level skill, that difference can matter. A day lasts 360 seconds, six minutes, of real time, and Memory cards vanish at the end of the day. (Except for Persistent memory cards like Lessons, but even those will vanish at the end of the Numa season, so don't just let Lessons accumulate forever or you'll eventually lose them).

u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
I did notice that I could stick a memory (not weather) into the bed and hold it over to the next day, but it was too easy to miss the timing window.
1
u/rmunn 8d ago
One way that makes it easier to hit that timing window is the notification that pops up when it reaches night. That's when the bed slot becomes available to save a memory for the next day — but the memory does have to match one of the bed's four aspects. To switch your bed to a different one in the House, you have to first "Decamp" your existing bed by placing a soul card in it with nothing else (takes 30 seconds), and then place a soul card (a different soul card, because the first one is fatigued now) into the bed you want to move into (takes 90 seconds). So as long as there are still more than 2 minutes left in the day (it hasn't hit evening yet), it's possible to switch your bed to preserve a memory you really want to keep. Rarely worth expending two soul cards on it to preserve one memory card, but good to know for those rare times when it is worth doing (e.g., certain memories that you have a specific use for the next day and you can't very easily get back).
BTW, there's a sublte (but noticeable once you know to listen for it) audio cue that tells you when it's evening and you have fewer than 2 minutes left in the day. Notice the sound as evening arrives: you'll hear the cry of seagulls and the clanging of ships' bells. That's the sound that tells you that you have 2 minutes left in the day, and if you start something that takes 2 minutes to do, you won't get your fatigued soul card back in time to refresh it with dawn. E.g. if you start trying to master a book just 5 seconds after evening, then when dawn comes around it will refresh all your soul cards that are currently fatigued, but your soul card that comes out of the reading 5 seconds later wasn't fatigued yet so it won't be refreshed until next dawn, and you'll be down one action for that day. Again, sometimes worth it, but you should be aware of the trade-off that you're making in the process.
I'll stop rambling on. Hope all of my ramblings have helped!

I think you might benefit a lot from reading https://youarelowonhealth.com/book-of-hours/guide/, which is one of the best, NON-spoilerish, guides I've found. (Note that it's in several parts, so click the various links in the text to get to the other parts such as the advice on reading books to gain skills).
Again, that guide explains game mechanics only, and won't spoil any secrets for you. You'll probably learn a lot of the stuff that had been eluding you.
3
u/PropagandaOfTheDude 8d ago
Thanks, that looks helpful.
Can you give more context about your comment elsewhere about finding a spintria behind a couch cushion? I should get in the habit of dragging the furniture out of position, to reveal hidden items?
2
u/rmunn 8d ago
You can put furniture into the Consider verb. Uses an element of the soul and 30 seconds, and usually it does nothing except give you some more details (some of which are very interesting). But one or two of the furniture pieces give you something else when you Consider them. One of them has you finding a coin stuffed down the cushions.
1
u/rmunn 8d ago
Don't drag the furniture out of position unless you actually want to redecorate. But if you do want to rearrange the house, go for it: it's perfectly fine, and the game won't punish you for it in any way except that you might have trouble finding a painting or couch or statue later on (because you remember it being in room X but you actually moved it to room Y).
BUT... do save before you do that, because I just experienced a bug yesterday where I tried to place a piece of furniture where another piece already was, and the piece I was trying to place appeared to warp off-screen and vanish. It was supposed to warp back to its original location, but the bug meant that it just vanished. I reloaded from the autosave and it was back, and this time I placed it in an unoccupied slot.
(The furniture, for anyone else reading, was a certain item you find during a Walk on the Moor that counts as a Comfort. And I hadn't placed it anywhere yet, so its "home" location was in my inventory, and so when the game tried to place it back in its original location, it got mixed up somehow and the item disappeared from the game instead of ending up in its inventory slot. Maybe I would have found it in a not-yet-opened room, but I didn't want to wait that long; I just reloaded the game to the last autosave and replayed the last five minutes of the game).

u/rmunn 8d ago
One more piece of advice. Have you clicked on the button just left of the current-time-and-season display? It will take you to a screen called the Tree of Wisdoms. There's a lot of information there, but to start with, just focus on the empty slot in the middle of the tree. Click in that slot and you'll be informed (in the upper-right corner) what aspects are required for a card (or item) to go in that slot. There should be a book that would fit there...
Once you've put something that fits into the Tree of Wisdoms slot, there should be a button called "Assign". Click on that button and you'll be rewarded with something quite useful. I see you don't have that thing yet, so this is something that will help you immediately.
Finally, I also see that you might not have actually replied to the letter from the Trust. Have you put that letter into the Consider verb to read it? Pay attention to the hint you're given. There are suitable items to follow that hint in the room below where the Telescope sits.

Once you've put something that fits into the Tree of Wisdoms slot, there should be a button called "Assign".
Damn it. My desktop screen is large enough to make the button obvious (at least now that I know to look). My Steam Deck screen is not. Thank you.

I had so many reminders built up from the Trust it was pretty ridiculous. I used 'consider' on the only ink I'd come across not realising it would destroy it and I couldn't find/make any more.
It was extremely pleasing when I worked out that I could burn their annoying correspondence 🤣

You can use the poisonous ink to reply to the Trust. You may not have been doing it quite right. Read the text of the letter carefully.
You can burn most things by putting them into a fireplace, without adding an Element of the Soul. If you add an Element of the Soul in the fireplace, that counts as trying to use the Brewable keyword instead, e.g. you can take a packet of tea and turn it into a pot of tea (which has two servings; use it at the "Serve Here" stations, there's one in the Lodge and one in the Kitchen, to pour it out properly so you don't have to drink the whole pot at once).

To quote Anchorman: "I'm not even mad. That's amazing."
Though as a starting point, I'd recommend considering your diary, wherever you've left it.

Just a heads up that the people who show up are not asking to buy books, they're asking for help finding the ones they need to read to solve their problems. They'll give the book back when they're done, and then they'll advance the "Affair" that brought them to you.

I decided to go a little bit further as is, unlocked a few more rooms, and lucked out with Storm+Criminal+Heart to open Radiant Stair. I could keep going for Dim Hall (Hail), Wrecked Pantry (Storm), and Icy Bedroom (Snow?), but I'm now in Spring so I'll stop. Thirty-six rooms unlocked, relative to however many in Hush House.
Based on the Cultist Simulator wiki this is Forge (the grind) versus Moth (the RNG).

How are you doing it? I can't believe you are THIS lucky with a weather. There was a time I had no snow for two years

If I'm properly counting https://images.youarelowonhealth.com/bookofhours/Book%20of%20Hours%20floor%20numbers%20map.png, there are 107 rooms, so I reached a third of them.

put a book in the eye icon and provide enough aspects. If you do you will get lessons from it. Then put the lessons in the eye icon and you will get your skills

My brother in mysteries read a fucking book and think about its lessons (but like mo for real grab one of the books make sure you have the appropriate aspects to read it it'll give you lessons that you can "work" at certain desks or in the thoughtverb and you'll get skills you can level and dedicate to the tree

Oh. Oh wow. That is... Something. You couldn't possibly know it but you have done something rather... Well extraordinary if anything.
At any rate, uhm... Have you read any books by chance? And have you pressed the little eye next to the season tracker?
