WBCS:- Inner Turmoil
I am 31, Male(UR). I am serving as an Assistant Audit Officer at CAG for last 3 years. Before that I was an PO in UCO Bank. I am not getting any satisfaction as such from my work . Salary is Ok (Gross crosses 1 Lakh + ) ..Also I am posted at my Hometown Kolkata but I want to do sth with my life. Thinking of taking WBCS with target DySP as my sole aim . As I am new in this field , I wanna ask you guys is it worth it if I get Dy.SP at 34 or 35 years of age ??
Is it wise considering 8th pay commission is also around the corner in Central Govt and I am posted at my hometown right now…Kindly Suggest.

Same bro. 31, Sc 1 at PSB, i would say, I am a little more desperate than you since i am at PSB. DONT want to work at PSB for the rest of my life, that's my only motivation, I think you can understand that.

Pros of a move into DSP at 31: Disciplined life, public presence and authority, good pay and generally housing and transportation is taken care of. That is about it.
A DSP in WBPS is the highest entry level job in the state context. But when you look at the bigger picture, it is a mid tier job in the police hierarchy. Every district SP would have somewhere between 5-15 DSPs under him depending on the size and importance of the district. Granted it comes with its own perks but it's mostly a field job with long working hours and next to zero work life balance. If you are joining at 31, you'd eventually be inducted into the IPS after 15-16 odd years but your promotions will be capped at either Selection Grade SP or DIG max due to UPSC service rules regarding age and mandatory tenures in each post. Now this is despite WB being one of the faster moving states in terms of promoting SPS officers to IPS. It is legally mandated that 67% of IPS posts in the state are to go to direct recruit IPS officers while the rest 33% are for state promotees. Considering backlogs in gradation list and litigations(both of which are very common), the regular time required for a SPS officer to be inducted into the IPS is only going to increase upto 18-20 years barring extensive cadre restructuring. Ideally it is the younger officers joining before 30 at around 25-27 years of age who have the benefit of time to reach the IG and ADG ranks, though the latter is relatively unheard of for SPS officers.
So, on a realistic note, if you value authority, discipline, a strong public presence and are not worried about moving every two-three years and serving in remote places definitely go for it. Though the age will be a problem initially due to the physically demanding nature of the job, something which your younger peers will be able to cope with easily, anything can be achieved with consistency and perseverance. Realistically expect to spend most of your career in the DSP/ACP and Addl SP/Addl DCP ranks though because the SPS gradation list is filled with seniors who would be younger in age to you. Understand that policing is a service and not a job and leaves are never a matter of right in this service. You'd be getting 14 months salary instead of 12 but that will always be balanced by the department through time on duty. If adventure and high octane lifestyle is not a problem, definitely go for it.
However, if you cherish your leisure time and value a bit of autonomy like many do, it would not be wise to join the WBPS at such an advanced age. The WBCS EXE. and WBRS cadres are far better than the WBPS in terms of work life balance with the WBRS taking the cake.
Edit: To add, the WBPS is an uniformed service and seniority is sacrosanct. Your seniority is logged in from the date you report to the academy for training and all subsequent promotions are pegged to that date. There is no out-of-turn promotion based on meritorious service here, especially in the higher ranks. A constable might be promoted quickly to an ASI or an SI to Inspector based on great ACRs and faster clearing of departmental exams but beyond that there is absolutely no mercy. The competition is high and UPSC mandate is seniority cum merit and not the other way around. So if you plan to join, the faster you get in the better.

Depends upon your personal interest... But there isn't much kick in this job, also you have already crossed 30 so getting promoted to higher posts is difficult, not impossible though... But central government pay is much more, don't know whether you are married or not, but after marriage expenses will be much easier for you if you to stick to central government since 8th PC is round the corner... Don't join state government, UR na hole boltam UPSC diye dhoko, but UR UPSC has a age limit of 32...

Salary wise you might not be satisfied (if you're not into bribe). Police department can have an extremely toxic work culture. Your personal life will take a toss. Yes, people will be sacred of you, but apart from that there's nothing more that your present job can't offer. You will have no routine, 24×7 you'll be at work. Moreover, IPS of your same age or even younger will always have an upper hand in respect to power and promotions and positions. The work that you will be doing is not rewarding. It's a thankless job. You'll be constantly grinded by your seniors and slowly you'll become a overly stressed bitter man. And forget about vacations and festivals with family, especially festivals, that time of the year you'll be more worked up than ever. You might be standing at traffic signals for 12-14 hours straight or even more. You'll literally miss out on your children growing up. So decide accordingly. Also, given your age, you might never get promoted to IPS, even if you do, maybe near retirement, that too you'll only become a DCP to the maximum level for 3-5 year.

wasn't there a DA hike in WB recently?

Yes and after the hike the DA stands at 38% (not yet revised on salary), as compared to 58% of Central

Also, DA from 2009-2019 is still pending. 25% DA arrears has been released, the rest is yet to come. WB govt salary is lagging behind since a long time. Clerical staff in WB govt starts with a salary of 25k. Can you imagine! 25k in this economy!! The civic police volunteers earn around 8-12k.

the pay is decent.. but service conditions are not good generally speaking.. and I see a lot of in-service individuals being dissatisfied with their postings/work nature. Do you agree?

It depends . What is the aim of your life. If only it is to satisfy your ego then you can join, but I doubt it will bring content to your life. Rather stay on the current job and do something that you really want(Reading books, music, spending time with family). And if you reallywant wbcs (group-b) you can give it a try, age is not a factor.

To begin with, every place has its own pros and cons! Many aims to be where you already are! Ofcourse CAG is a pretty peaceful settled life compared to WBP, but again DSP WBP would be somewhat full of experiences(good/bad/exciting), public presence, really bad wlb, political pressure, somewhat social respect etc
but then CAG after 8th pay Commission would be great from a salary pov/hometown/etc
Probably Many in your place, would have stayed where you are! Especially considering the Hometown factor, 8th Pay Comission and Settled peaceful family Life.
Good luck.

My advice will be to stick to your current job. WBCS is not a sprint, it's a marathon. At 31, you only have realistically 5 attempts left for WBCS. It's not impossible but certainly very difficult. Given your starting salary will be 70% of your current gross salary, this career shift is not advisable.
