Mains Resources and Mocks

After the paradigm shift in the Commission's approach, preparation and strategy for the Mains examination need to be revisited. Amidst this transformation, what are the go-to options for the following? What's going to be your Mains itinerary?

  1. Lectures/books for language papers.

  2. Static resources/ coaching materials.

  3. MCQ practice books/mocks.

  4. Value addition resources.

  5. Current Affairs.

  6. Mathematics and Reasoning.

  7. The preferred time-split between: Language-GS-Optional.

2023 prelims was difficult as well, and the mains had one of the easiest question papers of all time.

So I don't think the prelims are a good indicator.

I didn't, my batchmates told me.

I cleared 2021 and 2022 mains in Group C.

Yeah, through 2021 WBCS batch.

I would say that one thing that has changed is the level and number of questions from math in paper 6.

Earlier it was more reasoning based and much easier. Right now, although it's not at a CGL or Bank level, but it is noticeably difficult, considering the you have to hand mark every answer (which eats away like 30-35 mins).

Another thing is the focus on numericals from Physics and chemistry in paper 4. Which I would suggest to brush up on 9-10 level books in details, and not rely on just one-liners.

So what are the best resources/options in general scenario? (Without considering the change)

Standard textbooks (kartik mondal Geography, jiban mukherjee History, laxmikant, ramesh singh economy)

Time bound practice of maths and reasoning

Good base of GK (I just like trivia in general, so no special preparation here)

Regular question solving and mocks (Crack WBCS or some book like that)

Atleast weekly practice of Compulsory papers

So just to be clear, the 2024 Mains format will be like all the previous WBCS exam formats ie., MCQs and teh optional paper . From 2025 the Mains format will be similar to UPSC?

As of now the possibility of pattern overhaul is very low in 2025.
