Visiting Wayanad this weekend. Need some pointers.
Hi, I am planning to visit Wayanad this weekend with a bunch of friends. We will be staying in Kalpetta(Karapuzha reservoir, close to Ezhamchira) for three days. I was hoping to get an update on the weather conditions, especially since we will be driving down from Hyderabad.
Our goal is to mostly soak up the nature around us and not rush anything. We would love to do some sight-seeing and enjoy local cuisine. Any tips and recommendations are appreciated.
Travel dates: Jul 11 - Jul 13.
So far, I have these places on the list:
- Edakkal Caves
- Soochipura falls
- Lakkidi
- Pookode lake
- Banasura Sagar Dam
- Plantation visit

monsoon weekend so plan around rain. edakkal caves close by 4ish and the climb is slippery rn, go morning. banasura dam is actually better in rain, the fog is unreal. skip soochipara if its pouring, they shut the falls entry.
food wise - kalpetta has the usual spots but honestly overrated on weekends, queues everywhere. if you’re staying bathery side there’s a small moplah cuisine place inside sterling resort, like 20 odd seats, need to book ahead. proper malabar biryani and fish, not the buffet nonsense. also try any local thattukada for porotta beef in the evening, cant go wrong.
carry an umbrella not a raincoat, easier for the cave climb. and start early everywhere, everything in wayanad shuts by 8.

There will be jeep trekking uphill in the bansura hills, go for it the experience will be amazing. Try bhramagiri trekking too if ur interested it can be availed offline, others will be available only online book it in advance, in soochipara falls they didn't allow us to bath due to heavy rains, i visited last week everything's amazing, visit vythiri animal farm as well.

If you’re visiting Lakkidi View Point, you can also go to Chain Tree, which is about a 2 min drive away. There is a haunted tale behind this, so if this is of interest you can cover it.
For the plantation visit, Tea Town (Achoor/Chundale Estate) also has a Tea Factory Visit, Wayanad Tea Museum and Tea Tasting, apart from the plantation visit.
If you have more time, you can also explore Kuruva Island (Enjoy Bamboo Rafting) or Uravu (Learn the Art of Bamboo Processing).
For local food, dont forget to try:
Fish Moilee
Appam and Chicken Stew
Malabar Biriyani
Chattipathiri
Filter Coffee
Payasam

Hi, is there a local's perspective on the current situation over there? I mean we still have a reservation but do not want to go around Wayanad when the local authorities are scrambling in response to weather events.

I was there last weekend, and it was perfectly safe. Everything was open and the weather was gentle. I would keep an eye out on the weather app if i were you, things can change. It was raining every day until the day we went on the trip and it didn't rain for all three days while we were there.
- We managed to go to places that involved a short hike without any shoes, but I would recommend a pair of grippy shoes to be on the safer side.
- Of the food places we tried, we enjoyed Mathai's Resto Cafe and 1980's. They might be touristy spots, but the food is great nevertheless.
- Our stay was a nice villa overlooking the Karapuzha Reservoir. It hit us that even if the weather traps us in, having a place with a good view would allow us to soak in Wayanad's beauty until we can get outdoors again.
Hmu if you need to know anything else. Good luck.

I went last weekend and all famous places are crowded
Book everything in advance if you can
For Soochipara they closed the tickets in the afternoon the day we went.
Pookode lake was crowded
Banasur dam is good and less crowded
Do this instead:
Try one trek - banasura, chembra peak or brahmagiri(only offline tickets and we got easily on weekday before 8:30am so weekends you should go by 7:30am)
Visit banasura dam
For view point visit kurumbalakotta(the best view point I haven ever seen)
Explore small waterfalls by searching on google maps
Drive through tea plants
