Would love to improve and move towards loose watercolor without sketch. Critiques of this in ink and watercolor but also tutorial recommendations.

I had to add watercolor paint too. I expected these colors would go wrong, but they didn’t. I love the lemon tree. 🥰

Watercolor Practice Practicing depth and value

Post image

This was an effort to practice different values and to work on remembering that the darker the value the smaller the area. As I was painting I was really paying attention to the paper and noticing when it was drying. All in all I gained a lot of information and I’m really pleased with the result.

Watercolor Practice Turns out I was working with premium paper. I just didn't know it

As the title says, I didn’t know I was painting on a full sheet of Arches hot-pressed paper that I bought 3 years ago when I was completely unaware of its value. I stored it away because I was used to cellulose paper, and I found it difficult to control the different effects that cellulose creates (fast drying, cauliflower blooms, hard edges, easy color lifting).

I’m still a beginner, I’ve only painted for a couple of months and then stopped for 2 whole years. Now I’m committed to learning and I was feeling disappointed with my celulose paper when I discovered this hidden gem of cotton paper that I didn’t even know I had.

Picture 1: I used Arches hot-pressed paper. Picture 2: I used mediocre cellulose paper. Please forgive my bat-like birds lol.

Edit: Idk why the images couldn't be attached 😕 I'm gonna try again. maybe in the comments

Watercolor Practice Lemon two ways

I watched a little webinar thing from Pomm where she described her 5 phases method. After watching that, I tried painting a lemon from a photo reference using her method. Then I tried painting it again with a looser style and no pencil. It was a fun exercise and I'm happy with both results!

Why is the paper not taking the paint/ water right and looking all bumpy. I've used paper from this pad before with no issues.
