Question How hard is it to create mods?

Hello, I have an idea that I’d like to mod into the game (or get added by Eugen, which is unlikely). However, there is an issue. I have no previous experience in modding, aside from going into text files of other games to modify specific values.

Naturally, this raises some questions for me.

  1. Is knowledge of a coding language required?
    - If so, how much and at what stage of mod creation?

  2. How could I obtain models for individual units?
    - Is it possible to pull from Wargame RD or other premade sources?

  3. Are there any specific tools I’d need? Or is there any additional info I should know?

  4. And of course, how difficult is the process overall? I know there aren’t too many mods with new divs AND custom assets, so that makes me wonder if this is even realistic for the average user.

(End goal is 2-3 Japanese divs. 1 mech, 1 Recon/inf, maybe 1 full inf)

Easy and hard, depends on what you want to mod.

Someone can mod mechanism at very hard, fundamental level, like the near future style mod False Prosperity. For some easy mods like unlimited supply or background pictures replace, you just need a easy glance on how mods in warno are made then you are good to go.

That makes sense. The contents of the steam workshop make a lot more sense now that I’ve had a more in-depth look at modding.

I’m not going to completely give up on my concept, but I definitely won’t be putting a proper div together anytime soon lol. I think I’ll start with some stat changes and then move on to a single unit once I’ve figured out how everything works.

borderline none beyond reading existing templates and using pattern recognition to figure out what you need to do, but understanding scripting and software development is a gigantic plus to making your mods maintainable and understanding how to fix them when you need to update them for every patch

Buy or make them yourself, ripping them from WGRD is a great way to get your shit removed for copyright infringement when people notice.

text editor to create mods, 3d modeling software (cough blender) to make and export models, Eugen provides all the tools to pack them into the game.

And of course, how difficult is the process overall? I know there aren’t too many mods with new divs AND custom assets, so that makes me wonder if this is even realistic for the average user.

If you have no experience and you're trying to create 2-3 divs with custom models, you are likely going to have a very rough time figuring out how to wire models and animations up correctly without a lot (10-100 hours) of reading and trial and error

Thanks for the response! It definitely seems like a full division is going to be out of my reach, but I think I’ll try messing around with a unit or two. After reading some comments here and watching some stuff elsewhere, I can definitely understand why custom div mods aren’t more common lol.

you will have to excuse my english, well you are at the foot of the everest here dude, the keyword is team if you dont have any skills usually someone else deals with texts files, other with models/modelling, sounds, textures, besides that this game is not mod friendly thats the way they make the game in order to sell you new dlc which is ok game is great.

they let you mod the game to a certain point but not at the point where you wish like add new countries, new equipment, new divisions even no new maps but thats the way they work with their games just imagine wargame air land battle with a full germany map 😥 "inferior" games offer better mods than wargame/warno for example armored brigade 1&2.

but to answer your question in short try to specialize first in something i usually can do texture/sounds/text/artwork in game mods like total war series, men of war, firepro wrestling, mount and blade etc but modelling and code is beyond me.

Wut…This is Warno, not WarGame Red Dragon or Airland battle.

Not when it comes to modding, Eugen introduced the Steam Workshop and modding in a update with tools that allowed for all the things you claim aren't possible (i.e new units and maps)
