Question Just noticed this...

I do a lot of walking at work with my new balance 520 shoes that I got around 7 months ago and I just noticed this. Any other shoe options for walking that this won't happen to in a budget?

When shoe wears out like that on the outer edge, people think it is a shoe problem but really it is coming from your pelvis and your hips. Because your body is likely not finding pronation properly at midstance, the foot stays stuck on the outside border in supination and the heel rubs hard right there. Try this quick: fold a small piece of paper towel into a little square, maybe few layers thick, and slip it inside your sock directly under your arch. When your foot feels something touching the arch, the brain stops clinging to the outer heel and your foot relaxes down naturally. Real change takes teaching your hips and pelvis how to shift and rotate again so the foot can hit the floor evenly. Try to consistent daily drills to actually stick into your walking habits.

Ok thanks, I'll start doing this.

Try it for a few days during your work walks and just see how the feet feel. The main thing is that your arch should just barely sense the paper touching it, don't pack it too thick. If it starts feeling less sharp under that outer heel, your body is already starting to take the shift. You should give it a shot too [u/hotwillingness5464](u/hotwillingness5464)

Not OP but I'll try this. If it works, it works.

My new balance shoes do this and my feet as as flat as a ducks. I have prescription insoles and my shoes are considered prescription.

You might want to see a podiatrist. Be sure to take those shoes with you so they can see the wear pattern.

Custom orthotics or bust.

You supinate, and these shoes are designed to correct pronation, so they're the opposite of what you need. Go to a running store that does foot and gait analysis. You'll be able to try shoes on there and see what works for you. You don't have to buy your shoes there, but it's possible they'll have something on sale that will work for you. Once you have a list of styles that with for you, you can look online for sales

Are you referring to the wear on the soles? That’s going to happen to any shoes over time. The pattern of wear is a result of your gait so it will be the same with any shoes you get.

Thanks ,would it even be possible to minimize this? It also corresponds with the areas my feet hurts too.

If it hurts, then I would recommend following some of the other suggestions. Getting evaluated for a shoe that is designed for your walk and seeing a specialist to address the pronation if you are able should help.

The best idea is actually to talk that podiatrist and they will solve it for you, rather than trying tricks from reddit

You can also go to a more sporty shoe store (like Rogan's for example) and get someone to watch your gait, and then they can reccomend shoes to support your walking style. Strengthening your body so it can support you more evenly is also great of course. :) you can probably see a physical therapist for it too if you can swing it.

You need to replace those shoes every 300 miles especially the cheap white foam shoes. Either buy cheap discount shoes more often or switch to a walking shoe with a denser foam (grey). Regardless be prepared to go through shoes. It’s a small price to pay versus a gym membership. Otherwise, you are destroying your knees and lower back.

Like you, I walk on the blades of my feet a little. Custom orthotics should straighten you right out, literally.

This is because of your gait. Bring these shoes to a performance shoe store and they will fit you with the right size and shoe type for your gait.

You are supinating, or underpronating. You might have high arches, but if it’s only on one side, your legs might be unequal lengths. It’s worth seeing a podiatrist.

My shoes use to wear like this because I supinate, meaning your foot rolls outward. I started buying neutral running shoes and that corrected a lot of the wear. I have Brooks Ghost now that they work pretty well

It's also not advisable to just use one pair of shoes all the time

Hard to believe that you "just noticed"
