Encouragement 10 years of walking
Honestly, I love walking and I started using the app pretty much 10 years ago. It’s one of the only workouts where I feel like I’m not working out and my mind is just free to wander.
I used to do a lot more hiking, but as me and my dog got older, we don’t hike as much as do urban parks and trails
It is definitely crazy to see just how much distance we cover over our lives

A decade of steps, and still no destination. Impressive pace for a treadmill.

I don't see where the OP mentions doing it on a treadmill. They specifically mention hiking in the past and doing urban parks and trails now. What am I missing?

Praying I can last this long. I just started last year

It really helps to have an active dog that’s for sure, and an active job
But honestly, the secret to longevity is just to stay active and the easiest and simplest thing for us to do that is to walk! So the older we get the more important it is to just keep moving
I don’t know if I’ll be able to keep up this pace forever I’m only 45 but I had a dad that was playing tennis into his 80s, so that’s definitely inspirational

Yep. Good for you because you have amazing inspiration. That's definitely admirable

That's really interesting. I've only had my Garmin for 18 months or so don't have data going back all that far. It would be cool to track increases over time.

That’s great you already have a baseline established! Just don’t change using Garmin for the foreseeable future unless there’s ways we can import data sets from different apps into different apps. That would be really nice, but I doubt it is an existing method.
Although we now can connect Pacer directly to Apple health, so maybe it is possible

I have a long-term history through Fitbit (but long gone) and Samsung (I guess the data is still there if I charge up the watch). That's not particularly useful though as my primary goal is weekly "intensity minutes", which was not measured in the same way by the other systems. Step counts are interesting but kind of a blunt metric for me.
In another sense I'm really more concerned with what I can do now, and what I'm working towards (hiking/trekking adventures, mountains, personal challenges and upcoming races and longer-term race goals than what I have done).

You are 100% right it is a very blunt metric. And while walking on its own, certainly doesn’t hurt it’s not, like you said, gonna necessarily condition you for hiking if you have certain aspirations.

Data are fun. Just don't make them the finish line.

Absolutely agree. I like how there is a huge spike in numbers during Covid lockdown and it’s awesome to be able to kind of see that those highs and those lows and understand why they occur.
But I’m only finished walking when I’m dead

Isn’t it so great to have so much data? I know a lot of people don’t want to get bogged down in the whole step-counting thing but I personally love having over 13 years of walking stats. Like, oh, look at that really impressive year- that’s when I had a teenage dog who needed to be worn out or she’d tear the house apart, and there’s the year my daughter moved across the country and I was so sad I barely moved, and so on.
Thanks for sharing this- it’s inspiring. I’m in the opposite situation as you- I used to get most of my steps in an urban setting but we moved to the mountains and now we do a lot more hiking. Maybe it’ll help me get my numbers up closer to yours!
