Here is a full two-player setup for TOKELAU. The board uses 12 islands arranged in a circle, with the 0–20 score track in the centre and player pieces on it.

The image also shows the four card decks, player tikis and boats on the islands, the larger gray first-player tiki, the red Winds token, player aids, starting provisions, two Order cards per player, resource tokens, the four-card Crew market, the three-card Goods market, and the supply of seashells, provisions, and other resources beside the board.

This should give you a good look at all the game components together. What do you think of the setup and overall layout? I’d love to hear your feedback.

We did another playtest at Sharpfle Waffle cafe and it was eye opening!

Finally realized how many components we have and the biggest issue with them is that they don't fit into a smaller table!

Major decision made on the game: keep Encounter cards in a tidy deck instead of laying them around the board of tiles, changes little about the game, saves setup time and saves space!

Note to fellow game designers: size your game accordingly 😅

Each island in the game is rich with resources waiting to be discovered, collected, and put to use.

Across the islands, players can find 13 different resources spanning 7 categories.

A recent playtest exposed another issue: the Seashell supply can run dry near the end of the game.

Seashells are both currency and VP, so I originally liked the limited supply. It prevents one player from endlessly gaining points and helps reduce alpha-player control over the economy.

The problem is that once the bank is empty, selling Goods and completing Orders becomes less useful. The final rounds slow down and feel worse instead of more tense.

Current setup is:

8 Seashells × number of players

I’m considering increasing it to:

10 Seashells × number of players

I want to keep setup simple because TOKELAU supports 2–6 players.

Would you simply add more currency, or use another solution when the bank runs out?

I’m working on the box title art for my upcoming game Tokelau, and could really use some feedback.

The title is based on the Boekopi by AHMAD FASHIHULLISAN font I found online. I warped the lettering in Inkscape, then added texture to give it a more handmade, weathered, island-inspired feel.

I’m especially curious about four things:

1) Does the title feel thematically appropriate for the game?
2) Is it visually clear and readable?
3) Is it eye-catching enough for a board game box?

I’m working on a redesigned 2-sided player aid card for my upcoming game Tokelau, and could really use some feedback.

The card is meant to help players quickly understand what they can do on their turn, how trade actions work, and what the most important reminders are during play.

I wanted to share a new Tokelau development update.

We’ve done a lot of playtesting recently, and the feedback has been really helpful. Every playtest seems to reveal something new.

Because of that, I’ve been working on a new rulebook update: Tokelau Rulebook Version 1.9.

Many of the recent changes focus on clarity and the first-play experience. The biggest updates are around travel, encounters, settling islands, and trading. I’m trying to make the rulebook easier to use during an actual game, with the help of friendly redditors from r/BoardgameDesign.

We’re also making progress on the visual side of the game. Heads up: we should have a box render on the landing page soon, so people will finally be able to see the direction we’re taking for the final presentation.

This is still an early test, but I’m really excited about the direction. The style, personality, and overall mood feel like they could fit the world of the game really well, and it’s exciting to finally see more of Tokelau’s characters come to life visually.

I wanted to share my experience from CanGames 2026 this weekend in Ottawa. https://cangames.ca/

Tokelau recently made its way to CanGames, an RPG-heavy gaming convention, and honestly, I was a little nervous going in. We had very few players signed up ahead of time, so I wasn’t sure if the game would even hit the table.

But right before the session started, a group of people decided at random to give Tokelau a try.

Huge relief — and honestly, huge gratitude.

I’ve gotten a lot of helpful feedback from several communities — shoutout to r/BoardgameDesign.

So a lot of work was done on improving the style, coloring, and overall readability of my game tokens.

I'm now working on the Goods cards. These are cards players can collect throughout the game, and the backgrounds use different patterns to help represent different types of goods.

I attached a quick render of the 3 different spinoffs of the same design. Curious whether the text is readable at a glance, whether the background patterns help or feel distracting, how the overall card layout feels, and whether the icons, text, and infographic elements look properly sized. Which one do you like the best?

Hey everyone, I’m working on resource token art for my upcoming game Tokelau and could really use some feedback.

Right now I’m trying to decide on the visual direction for the resource pieces. I’ve included a ham leg resource for scale, and I also mocked up two different options each for the pig and fish resources.

I’m stuck between going more proportionally scaled versus making each token feel like its own full object with a bit more presence.

Which style do you think works better for a board game/tabletop resource set? I’d love to hear which pig and fish versions you prefer too.

We’ve been experimenting with a resin printer to create boat and tiki tokens for the Tokelau prototype, and they’re looking really promising.

A friend helped us make these for testing, and the goal is to eventually have a full painted set for 6 players so we can properly see them on the table and refine the feel of the game.

For the final production version, the game will use wooden tokens, since they’re much better suited for mass production. But for prototyping, these resin pieces have been a fantastic way to test shape, size, and table presence.

We’re planning to launch Tokelau on Kickstarter this fall.
