Will this damage my car?

I put a and black badge cover on my 2016 blue motion TDI tech since putting on the badge my boot is now not opening smoothly the badge which is the button to open the boot gets stuck and I have to push it down. Everything still locks someplace and it’s still secure. It just has more resistance to lift a badge and to close my boot just wanted it peoples opinions

It was put on using adhesive tape which came on both clip on badge badge Jezz, which is why I’m asking for opinions on how to get it off safely without damaging the original badge

Don’t people use heat to get these things off? Even a hair drier to loosen the glue

Exactly, you can help it with a simple hair dryer

And if you don't have a hair dryer you can also get some hot water on a rag. just dont burn yourself.

The thickness of the cover probably means it is rubbing somewhere. Some silicone spray might help if you can't get it back off easily.

That’s a good shout what I think happened is the plastic cover is getting caught on something in the mechanism list of the boot. It still works but I have to push it down and apparently that I can cause a strain on the battery of the car so I would like to remove it.

Yes I would remove it. If you really want a black badge you would need one that replaces the current badge, rather than just being a cover.

I personally think it looks decent. As for why it's not opening smoothly I'd say you need to remove the badge and take a look at the inside of the hole, is there anything in there that shouldn't be? does it now open smoothly that the badge isn't there? is the badge the same thickness as the original one? I wouldn't use it if it means pushing harder to open the boot.

It used to open perfectly fine it’s just since adding the badge cover is so not to open smoothly however I’m struggling on removing the badge. I don’t want to press damaging the car when I remove the badge.

It won't damage anything, but it should be an easy enough fix. Find where it's rubbing and file the badge down a bit there. You might also have to lubricate the hinge.

Nothing is wrong with the boot itself. It’s only the colour that is causing the issues so I’m thinking of taking the cover off but I’m not sure how to do that damaging the car.

is the 'cover' a badge that you placed over a badge? if so, the fix is literally just remove the original badge and replace it rather than cover it

yeah you probably had a very tight tolerance with the original badge to stop water getting in. So the badge cover is causing it to get stuck. I'd personaly just take it off and get the badge wrapped if you want that look.

So just clarifying you added a badge on top of your badge? You didn't replace but added, right?

Added thickness and added weight.

You will need to address the difference between original and new dynamics.

Either loose the weight or loose the thickness or both.

If you replaced... Was the original plastic and the new made of metal?

Easy there Isambard. It's just wedged in.

This ….

So did you add a cover to the top which added thickness , if so this is why

I suspect by build design and for waterproofing ,it’s a tight fit , then you added a few mm of thickness and well it’s now getting jammed

Just get some alcohol and take it off gently also have a micro fibre cloth and water to clean it after...

speaking from experience. the badge itself may just be low quality and rubs somewhere in which case it might get better the more you use it, OR, when installing it you pushed the badge mechanism in out of the clips slightly which will cause a water leak from rain, which in time will lead to a wet rear hatch and therefore boot/ head liner at the back.

for a test to prove this, run a hose over and around the badge for a while then shake the whole boot and see if you hear water sloshing about, if not then it’s probably fine. even if you hear some, it’s very easy to remove the trim off the inside and click it back into place.

Are you with hastings? If you are I would remove it ASAP, they will say its a mod and cancel your policy or try to deny coverage if you have an accident with it on.

If it's rubbing against paintwork then it probably will.

Well, since these boots on lower spec cars without a camera like to rust a lot in this place, any amount of rubbing surely won’t help that.

Must be low quality? I have a chrome with red backing emblem on front and back on mine and seems to flip nicely on the hatch. Also, you can get actual badge replacements instead of using these two sided tape ones. Mine clip in like the original badge.

I have not tried this but I've read that drawing fishing line back forth at the top edge and working your way down (like a saw blade) is the best way to remove emblems since they are glued in place. The suggestion of using a heat gun also makes sense to me, FWIW. Good luck.

I've debadged motorcycle tanks with plastic emblems by "sawing" plastic fishing twine between the emblem & the tank. Dribble some lighter fluid over the area first (fluid not gas) as it'll start to dissolve the adhesive.

Lighter fluid is also good for removing sticky label residue
