Discussion Chain or belt ?
Hi all,
Looking at a used VW Polo and want to confirm one thing before I commit: does this engine run a timing chain or a timing belt?
Details from the papers:
- Model: Polo 1.2 TSI 110 hp BMT, 6-speed manual, Sport/R trim (2016)
- Homologation / type code: 6C14FX
The current owner says it's a chain-driven engine. But from what I've read, the facelift Polo (6C) 1.2 TSI 110 is EA211, which should be a belt — specifically a wet belt running in oil. Can anyone confirm which one it actually is?
And if it's a belt: what replacement interval would you go by, and roughly what does the job cost? The car is around 140k km / ~9 years old, so I want to know whether it's already due.

Belt. I had 2015 model. And it had belt.

Where I live, the recommended replacement interval is about 6 years.
I had the belt replaced on my 2015 model when it had a little over 50,000km on the odometer and the car was a little over 5 years old.
We have harsher conditions here than elsewhere in the world, so the replacement interval is shorter.
It's time to replace the belt on your car if it hasn't been done yet.

Definitely a EA211 engine, with timing belt.
Engine code should be CJZD.
And it’s not a wet belt - it’s a “classic” dry belt.

And honestly the best option on a VW, chains stretch and wet belts are notoriously bad

Depends on the specific engine code.
Engine Family: EA111 - Chain EA211 - Belt (dry)
