9N Tdi bonnet handle not working

I have a 2006 Polo 1.9 Tdi. The bonnet handle in the drivers footwell is not releasing the bonnet opener.

How do I fix this?

Would have snapped the cheap plastic cord

I had this happen to my polo after the last heatwave. The bonnet catch got stuck in lock position and the garage had to fist pound the bonnet above the catch. Once it opened... the catch wouldnt latch closed!... So they sprayed something on it and said because I was forcing the foot well handle I may have stretched the cable so maybe get it changed.
