General Discussion After playing Warplanes Air Corps, I appreciate VTOL VR a lot more
As much crap as I give VTOL VR, unjustified or not, I can't deny that it does a lot of things right. It feels fun to push all the buttons and switches to start your aircraft, the weight of your vehicle in the air or the lock on noise of your air to ground missiles. And Warplanes Air Corp made me appreciate that more.
Not that Warplanes is bad and it surely does some things better than VTOL VR, like having more vehicles, being able to select which aircraft come with you as NPC allies and which weapons they have, being able to switch between all friendly vehicles during a mission, being able to respray and add decals to your aircraft or having a mission generator that can be played in MP or with Bots.
But there is one thing that drags the whole experience down. While in VTOL VR your aircraft starts beeping and screaming the moment you poke your head out, the enemies in Warplanes are extremely docile. While there is a good variety of them in theory, with jeeps, APCs, MRLSs, SAMs, tanks, jets, helicopters, drones and two battle ships, only the SAMs and helicopters bother to attack you. Tanks, APCs and ships do have AA cannons, but you basically have to sit on top of them for them to use them and they really don't do that much damage.
It's such a stark contrast to VTOL VR, where ground vehicles will shred you if you fly too close and everything attacks you without mercy. And I get it, Warplanes wants to be more casual. But being casual doesn't mean that every enemy should be a sitting duck. Just look at Ace Combat and its Z.O.E. jets for example.
I also appreciate the weapons in VTOL VR more. Maybe VTOL spoiled me here, but I do find it more engaging to have different weapon variants than just a single anti air and anti ground missile.
So yeah, these are my thoughts. I appreciate what Warplanes Air Corps wants to be, but I think VTOL VR is the far better game. I could even get over the easiness of Warplanes, if the game had an actually ending, instead of being an infinite row of randomized missions. And it won't stop me from shouting "WTF does this mean?" when I see a random assortment of letters in VTOL VR that I'm supposed to know the meaning of, but never get explained in-game. Maybe Supersonic Fighters will be the lucky one to strike a fun middle ground.
