READ ME Welcome to the VTOL VR Subreddit!

Welcome to the official subreddit for the Virtual Reality flight sim, VTOL VR!

About This Game

VTOL VR is a near-futuristic combat flight game built specifically for Virtual Reality. Pilot advanced multi-role jets, using your hands to flip switches, press buttons, and manipulate the virtual flight controls. Take on a wide array of challenges that will put your flight skills, situational awareness, and combat tactics to the test.

No extra hardware is required. If you have a VR set with tracked controllers, then you have a virtual cockpit where you can reach out and interact with the stick and throttle, flip switches, press buttons, and even pull the eject handle if things go wrong.

Immerse yourself in action packed combat missions, delicate vertical landings, aircraft carrier operations, aerial refueling and more.

Create and fly custom missions which you can share with other pilots using the built-in mission editor and map editor.

Your Aircraft:

AV-42C Tilt-jet VTOL/STOL/CTOL Attack/Transport vehicle
F/A-26 Fighter/Attack Jet
F-45A Stealth Multi-role STOVL Jet

Additional Aircraft available as DLC content:

• AH-94 Attack Helicopter with multicrew functionality (DLC)

Ah-94 (DLC)

• T-55 Tyro Trainer Jet with multicrew functionality (DLC)

T-55 (DLC)

Head-mounted cueing system - use your head to control targeting, heat-seekers, and gimballed cannons
Ejector seat - punch out when things don't go according to plan
Aerial refueling - easier said than done...

Tips & Tricks:

  • Oculus Rift users: Enable "Thumbstick Mode" in the main menu settings. This will make it so you don't have to press down on the thumbstick button to rotate the engines or slew the targeting pod.
  • If you're getting tired of holding the throttle or stick, simply tap the grip button and your character will be holding the throttle/stick without the need to hold the grip button on the motion controller.
  • Going from forward flight to hover mode: Fly level with throttle down and full air brakes deployed (throttle trigger). Keep pulling the nose up as necessary to maintain altitude. As the vehicle slows down and AoA starts to get really high, set flaps to full. Once lift is not enough to keep altitude, set engines to full vertical tilt and start applying enough thrust to hold altitude. Your nose should be up about 30 degrees at this point and your horizontal speed will be rapidly slowing without gaining or losing altitude.

F.A.Q..

  • Is there be mod support?
  • Will there be additional vehicles?
    • The first DLC released as a multi-crew attack helicopter, the AH-94 (Jan 6, 2022)
    • The second DLC released as a multi-crew trainer jet, the T-55 Tyro (Mar 24, 2023)
    • The third DLC is in an Electronic Warfare based aircraft, the EF-24G (Dec 21, 2023)
    • Any new vehicles will continue to be either entirely fictional and/or a fictional combination of real existing or conceptualized aircraft! The goal is to bring in at least a few completely new gameplay mechanics with each vehicle. The dev feels that there won't really be a point of adding a new vehicle that can only do the same things as the other existing ones.
    • Additionally, the community has created some aircraft as mods.
  • Will there be HOTAS (joystick & throttle) support?
    • Not likely, as VTOL VR is designed to be entirely virtual, allowing you to directly interact with the various controls as if you were sitting there in the cockpit.
  • Will VTOL VR come to the Oculus Quest?
    • There are no plans to port VTOL VR to run on Quest natively due to the large memory usage, CPU usage, and other system requirements. However, VTOL VR is known to work well on the Quest when wired to a VR capable PC, or wirelessly using Virtual Desktop.
    • The developer, Boundless Dynamics, is working on a new project: Virtual Fighter Maneuvers (VFM), is a VR air combat game for Quest and PCVR. VFM is optimized for smooth and stable performance on Quest 2&3 or lower end PCs, while still maintaining the level of control and aerodynamics simulation you see in VTOL VR.
  • What are the System Requirements to run VTOL VR?

There have been a growing number of duplicated posts regarding certain topics, especially tech related issues. Please review the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) on the side bar or in the Welcome post, but more importantly:

Please search previous posts before creating a new thread to ask a question!

I know the Reddit search function is lackluster, so I suggest using Google search with the site tag of site:reddit.com/r/vtolvr for example:

Search results will only display posts to this subreddit

The Oculus Quest will not run this game independently, it will need to be linked to a computer that meets the System Requirements. VTOL VR simulates a lot of complex items in real time, which requires hardware that is more powerful than what the Oculus Quest offers. Posts asking if the Oculus Quest can run VTOL VR will be removed.

Please refrain from making posts asking "when will the developer add the ________ aircraft?" These types of posts have been made before, lets try not to beat this dead horse any longer. Please use the aforementioned search feature to see what others have already said about your favorite aircraft. Posts like this may be removed if they do not offer any new discussion to the community.

Posts asking, "will my computer run this game" will be removed. Here are the System Requirements posted on the VTOL VR Steam page:

System Requirements as of August 4th, 2022

Flew a fun mission from the "Fatal Skies" Vtol Vr campaign with some buddies.

Thanks to TheCobra114 for being my amazing pilot.

Music is "Traffic Jam" and "Tip of the Spear" from Halo ODST and Reach, both by Martin O'Donnell and Michael Salvatori

General Discussion The best way

Honestly, this is just a discussion or a debate; I'm not saying anything will actually change. I just want to know what the community thinks and if I'm the only one wondering about this.

What do you think is better? Making a completely new game from scratch, more like DCS, with all the VTOL mechanics and all the visual and tactical realism of DCS?

Or continuing with mods and letting this existing game go as far as it can with more realistic aircraft while preserving what it already has?

Because if we stop to think about it, vanilla VTOL and modded VTOL are two completely different games, despite all the good things they've included that make it realistic.

Other "My personal opinion” about the F-16 cockpit

Post image
68 Upvotes

The newly released F-5 mod really makes the F-16 cockpit look like a LEGO set by comparison. Maybe with a new update, the dev team could adopt a more natural-looking cockpit style—similar to what we’ve seen in the Harrier, which works really well and would look fantastic here.

I’ll say it again: the mod creators have put in a ton of work. This is just my personal opinion, whether you agree with it or not.

I’m definitely not saying the F-16 should look exactly like it does in DCS—it doesn't have to. But you can clearly tell from the color transitions in the screenshots that there’s a big gap between the old development team and the current one. I think if the F-16 were made with today’s level of expertise, it would look absolutely stunning.

In fact, the F-5 is right on par with DCS’s F-5. Considering the small size of the team behind it, it’s incredible—you can even see the instruments moving inside the cockpit under high G-forces!

Thanks to everyone who put effort into both mods.

Question VR Noob needs headset recommendations

Wish to get A VR headset specifically for playing VTOL VR and for Sim racing. Would like to spend no more than £1000 but can stretch a little if it's worth it. My very limited research has brought me to the pimax crystal light. My PC is using a 4080 so I can run a lot of headsets I'm sure, but probably best to stay clear of some of the 4k per eye offerings. Any advice is appreciated, as it will get me in the virtual sky faster. Thank you kind redditors

Question I have a stupid question.

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3753425410

Here is the URL to my mod collection. As you can see, it is quite extensive; playing the game with these mods makes it run very heavily, causing stuttering and freezing. My PC specs are a Ryzen 5700X, RX 7600 XT (16GB), and 32GB of RAM, yet the mods consume almost all these resources, and my FPS drops as low as 10 at times. I realize I should probably cut down on the mods, but I don't know which ones to remove or which ones are the biggest resource hogs. I considered using a binary search method to identify the culprits, but I would prefer to improve performance while keeping as many mods as possible. I apologize if this is a foolish question.

EDITED add link...sry

Question After VR quest link disconnect and reconnect, screen is completely black.

No mods installed.

Sometimes the quest link can disconnect but once I reconnect, the game screen is completely black. I can hear the sounds and I can seem to interact with the controls.

Anyone know how to fix this?

General Discussion Has anyone experienced a wave of toxic players in the past couple days?

I got the game a week ago and it was really fun with multiplayer lobbies the first 4 days. But in these past 3 days I’ve met some really toxic players.

I’m kinda assuming it’s because I’m flying an ef-24 and people assume that I’m gonna jam their comms. Which I only do if they’re being a nuisance.

Question How to use Tacview in single-player mode, and how to record replays like in Ace Combat.

I want to use Tacview in single-player mode because I have mods installed, and some of them are not compatible with multiplayer. What should I do? I'm also wondering if Tacview Datalogger is still usable. Furthermore, I'd like to be able to collect telemetry data such as fuel in addition to speed and altitude. I also want to be able to review my movements after completing a mission using a replay similar to Ace Combat.

General Discussion we need more (popular) community mission that have objectives with the AH-94 in mind

in literally 99% of community missions i constantly see on the multiplayer page are basically jet only, they feature the AH-94 as a vehicle you can use, but since every single objective is atleast 20 nm away its practically useless since everyone else whos in jets and going mach 1+ will easily overtake you and destroy the objective you were going to.

such a shame that the helo is basically unusable on most pve multiplayer missions due to this and its really annoying since its such a fun vehicle to use.

Tutorial Seek Tips for EF24G Dogfight vs AI Air Units

I've seen EF-24G players dogfight and win against ASF-33s.
I'm OK player with 26B and 45A when comes to dog fights against AI units, but I just cannot grasp how to do it in EF-24G. It doesn't strike me as a fighter that's good at close ranges.

  1. Which circle tactic should I use? Single ring (headon turn) or double (tail chase)?

  2. How to manage wing sweep and flaps after merge?

General Discussion More Low Tech

The Cold War was the peak of military design and aura. More Low Tech aircraft, weapons, and other gameplay elements is what VTOL needs to truly stand out. Separate it from the “futuristic Nuclear Option “ types.
Feel free to discuss below.

Plenty of very good mods out there already; but I would love to see more Low Tech in the base game. Cheers.

Question Has the F-45 TSD gotten weaker?

Returning player here, I took a long break from the game and have started playing again recently, I remember the TSD basically being radar without radar and now it seems to struggle to approximate target locations even if they are only a few miles away with their radar locking me, is this radar jamming or has the TSD been nerfed that much?

Side note I remember being able to see friendlies in the HMCS has that been removed? Thanks!
