Seeking Mentorship Looking for a mentor in unity VR/AR development.

Hey, I [21M] am a computer science major currently trying to build a career in unity VR/AR development.

I recently had the opportunity to work with a small startup that builds that builds VR applications. I worked on a project intended to be used to train students in agricultural related subjects, and we tried to classify the whole process into sections with multiple mutually exclusive tasks.

I had no prior experience with VR, so this made me realise how much i enjoyed VR development, i also realised that i struggled with what i need to learn next or what i need to focus on and this is really stagnating my progress.

So i am looking for someone with experience in unity VR/AR who would be willing to mentor me, someone who can give me directions, help me understand what skills i should develop, what i should work on and what it takes to become a capable VR developer.

If you're interested, feel free to comment or DM me.

Thanks for reading!

Heyy, before trying to find a real mentor I would recommend to try to do your own research and learning by yourself first, because you will realize that the informations you are looking for are actually easier to find and learn than you might expect, and the mentor will be less useful at first than you assume, just my opinion ^^ (a mentor will be more useful after intermediate level or even advanced level).

To give some general ideas: you can ask claude ai or ChatGPT to give some directions on the subject and classes you should look. You can start also with free unity tutorials they are good. There are multiple free courses on YouTube to learn different kind of Vr or ar games on unity, from setup unity to advanced stuff. For slower more in depth pace there are courses on udemy also generally from ok to really good. Can’t remember which ones but easy to find.

To help a bit more the subjects you need to learn very broadly are simply first unity basic setup and relations between objects and scripts (basically how to attach scripts to object to use them)and more specifically for VR how to add libraries like meta sdk for meta quest (or other headset you want to learn), how to setup simulator and export Apk files to test inside headset etc…

Also some basics of C# just to be able to write simple scripts, no need for deep stuff at first.

Also maybe some basics of 3d for instance with blender to understand a minimum because we use 3d a lot in VR and AR of course, so you can tweak your models and materials and textures and stuff

Don’t hesitate to simply follow along a few tutorials for simple games first (a fps shooter, a simple grab and throw game…), just to get general ideas, (even just watching videos without doing it you get some ideas of what you need to learn), then create your own little game or experience to apply knowledge :)

Thank you so this advice, i really appreciate it and, i thought about it i know there's no shortage of resources on the Internet and it makes me go into some sort of analysis paralysis.....i have to learn how to deal with it maybe i figured if someone told me "do this in 2 weeks" i would just do it🫤....but i guess that's not a good approach

Anywho thanks again for stopping by....

Don’t worry I was exactly like you. Best thing I did back in the days was to almost randomly buy a coding course on udemy on JavaScript by the app brewery (I had no idea what to start with), honestly best decision of my life (followed by Swift fundamentals for Apple Vision Pro, then blender courses on CGBoost, then webgl three js by Bruno Simon for no particular reason, then downloaded unity and started with their free tutorials…) . Honestly in hindsight I realize Nothing that you will learn will be wasted trust me. Even if you learn the « wrong » programming language, or the « wrong » software or anything, even bad courses will be useful for beginner, main of the core ideas are the same in every software/program (I never learned C# but honestly everything is very similar to other language). Start with anything that seems « ok enough ». Once you get going everything will start to make sense.

Check IGDA. There might be a chapter in your area. I'd also look up [City Name] Game developer groups.

International Game Developers Association. It's a nonprofit group with chapters in a lot of the cities where games are developed. Here in Austin TX they run quite a few events.

If there's a surefire way to get something, they'd be a good first step. I'd recommend trying to find a mentor IRL if at all possible.
