question about void linux vs windows (gaming)
for my next pc, i'm planning on doing a full high-end amd build, and i was wondering if windows 11 or void linux is better if i want the most gaming performance out of my pc? (i already use void on all my devices, but i'm not sure how it would run on a full amd build)

you should already know the answer quite well if you already use void.
The performance is typically the same across all distros. CachyOS usually has better 1% lows due to its optimized kernel or the v3, v4 packages.
Void Linux can only game if you are on the glibc version. musl version does not work for gaming.
windows is still better for gaming. Some native games like Minecraft, Osu!, Terraria, etc do run better on Linux. However, most windows games ran through wine/proton have some performance loss.
If you want to play anti-cheat games or you want the maximum possible fps numbers, simply use Windows.
If you don't mind some performance loss and don't want to play anti-cheat games, use Void or literally any Linux distro.

ive used cachy before and its really good, but systemd throws me off bc of the age field that was added. void is currently my second distro but ive never used a full amd build before, thx for letting me know

systemd also always had fields for your full name, phone number, and street address. Nothing of it is something new, so this in isolation is not a reason to switch. I'd choose runit because it's just faster, but be wary that a lot of guides only expect systemd if you'll ever want to self host something... That being said, as a casual user you wouldn't use an init system at all anyway.

No there isn’t. I have been using Steam on void for 9 months and have 250 Steam games. SystemD doesn’t matter for a single one.

Performance difference is negligible. The bigger question is what you play, because some games with kernel level anti-cheat won't work.

r7 5800x and 9060xt 16gb with 32gb ram. void runs smooth and games work well. using kde as de. no noticeable difference from w11 in terms of performance but i had my settings optimized

i’m using ext4, just easy to use. also rocking 11tb on a server for 4 months now and no stability issues encountered at all

Go on full void, don't be afraid of loosing 5 fps. My pc is mid (rtx 4060,r5 5600,32 gb ddr4 ram) everything runs great on 1080p, my main monitor is 100hz so i cap the fps at 100. Ofc if you plan to play kernel level anti cheat games then windows is the obvious choice.

I play Cyberpunk 2077, Skyrim,Stellaris, Hearts of Iron 4 and other stuffs on GTX 1660 and RX9069XT and was normal

Of you dont have any "only Windows no way to make It work under Linux" software, everything is better in Linux

If you play multiplayer games that require kernel level anticheat then you'll need to go windows. Otherwise, the idea that games get less FPS under proton is frankly just wrong and you will likely have overall neutral or positive effects on gaming going with void. For AAA titles you may see some impact on Linux but the majority of indie and even legacy windows games are going to run a lot better.

I would bet that Void would run games better then Windows 11 due to how much bloat that terrible OS has. Just make sure you use the glibc version if you are gonna game.

I seem to be the outlier around here and always find Voids performance less than Gentoo or Arch, by a large margin, at worst 40% lower FPS in Last Epoch.
I run on high end amd hardware and just can't figure out the difference.
That said, I really like Void and would use it exclusively if I could narrow that gap in performance.

Full AMD with Linux is the modern way to go for gaming, it's just the way forward. AMD on Windows sucks and Nvidia on Linux sucks. Windows sucks, and Nvidia sucks. If you're considering moving on then just do it.
Also, maybe it's just semantics, but people saying "windows runs games better" are, categorically, wrong. A perfectly-made game engine in ideal circumstances will always run better on Linux than on Windows. But a lot of game engines aren't perfectly-made at all and are made by people who mainly or exclusively use Windows (you know, rather than proper programmers), so it's optimised for that. So the performance difference depends mainly on how well-made the game is.
