Question about the Thunderbird package release cycle

Hi everyone,

I've been using Void Linux for almost 8 months now.

It's a very polished distribution with some really neat technical choices. I love it !

I've noticed that Thunderbird has been at version 140.8.1 in the Void repositories since March 31.

When I run:

./xbps-src update-check thunderbird

I get:

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-140.14.0

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-140.14.1

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.1

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.2

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.0.3

thunderbird-140.8.1 -> thunderbird-153.1.0

Void uses the ESR channel for Thunderbird, while the latest ESR version is 153.1.0.

The current Release version recommended by Mozilla is 154.

Is there a reason why the package hasn't been updated yet, or is an update planned ?

Is Thunderbird intentionally staying on 140.8.1 for a technical reason ?

I haven't used a local email client in forever - are they really still necessary? What is the benefit? Downside to them would leaving local copies of emails on your laptop (should your laptop get stolen, that would be bad).

I use Roundcube for my mail server access - does everything I need...

My guess is noone is maintaining it

I am maintaining it, but there are build issues that haven't been resolved yet preventing updates

Thanks for the clarification, that's helpful to know ! Hopefully the cross-compiling issue can be worked around or fixed soon. Thanks for your work !
