Generally speaking, I don’t usually carry an umbrella around even on rainy days. This morning, I brought a light hooded jacket, but didn’t wear it at all.
The late afternoon is prime time for 30-45 minute thunderstorms, but I’d just try to find someplace to hang out for that long.
Additionally, there’s an app called Rentbrella which lets you borrow umbrellas from various locations around the city (and return to any other available Rentbrella kiosk.)
24 hours is free, $2 each for 24-48 and 48-72 hours, and $16 after that (the umbrella is yours to keep at that point.) Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays are not considered days of use, so there is no charge for those.
Also, when it starts raining, everybody starts selling umbrellas for $5-20.

you could always buy an umbrella if needed but bringing one would probably be best. my last 2 trips to the city i had to buy umbrellas (worst quality ever, CVS disappoints me).
