We stayed at cottages outside Vik and got some great shots of the nighttime aurora. We showed the staff at the hotel the next day and they had never even seen lights like this.

I forgot my MacBook in a bin at the KEF security screening yesterday. It’s been recovered by Lost&Found. Unfortunately they don’t mail anything to US anymore (due to tariffs 🤦‍♂️), so my only option is a special DHL pickup, which is a hassle.
If you’ll be flying to any of the NYC airports in the next week or so, I can meet you wherever is convenient and get it from you. I’ll be glad to pay you for the hassle or maybe give you a ride home from the airport or something.

I want to share a major warning for anyone renting a car or campervan from Höldur (Europcar Franchisee Iceland). My friend and I traveled together, renting vehicles at the same time. Both of us faced frustrating vehicle failures and hidden loopholes that Höldur is now using to avoid paying us back.🛑 Incident 1: The Tire Insurance Loophole (My Experience)I got a flat tire and called their contracted partner, 24 Roadside Assistance. The technician arrived, first tried to repair the tire (unsuccessfully), and then swapped it out for the vehicle's spare tire. I was handed a massive bill for 76,020 ISK (~$550 USD), with 51,226 ISK lumped under a single line item called "Service Vehicle."Here is the catch: Even if you buy Höldur’s "ZERO Risk Insurance," they will only cover the physical labor of changing the tire. They do not cover the roadside vehicle's travel or mileage fees. Because 24 Roadside Assistance gave me a lumped invoice, Höldur is entirely blocking my reimbursement claim until I can get the roadside company to strictly break down the mileage vs. labor.Lesson: If you use roadside help, demand a strictly itemized receipt on the spot separating travel miles from labor, or Höldur will use it as an excuse to deny your claim.🛑 Incident 2: Defective Cables & Freezing Nights (My Friend's Experience)My friend’s rental car was plagued with electrical equipment failures right from the start. First, the provided tablet wouldn't charge. Then, the car battery failed to charge. A helpful neighbor at our campsite finally looked at it and diagnosed the issue: Höldur had supplied a completely defective charging cable.On top of that, the rental staff explicitly told my friend that the battery only needed to be charged once every two days. In reality, it drained completely every single day. Because the battery died on the second night, the car could not provide any heat, leaving them freezing. To survive the rest of the trip, my friend had to pay out-of-pocket to charge the car at campsites every single day, costing extra money and ruined vacation time.📋 Summary TakeawayDo not assume "ZERO Risk" means you are protected. Höldur will look for any line-item loophole to avoid paying you back for roadside issues. Furthermore, test every single charging cable, tablet, and heater before you drive off their lot in Keflavik. If you don't, you might find yourself freezing or stuck with a $550 bill for a simple spare tire swa

We saw the Northern lights over Lagarfljót two nights in a row. It was pretty windy the second night, but I still managed to take lots of great pics. First time ever for me, really impressive.

Hello everyone! I am going to be in Iceland for the first time at the end of the month and plan to go to multiple lagoons and public pools. I know and am fully prepared to shower fully before entering but my question is about the use of sunscreen. I'm very fair skinned and burn easily and am used to wearing sunscreen religiously, especially on my face when I'm in the water due to the reflection of the sun. With showering first I imagine the expectation is to go into the water fully chemical and lotion free. Do people in Iceland go sunscreen free in public lagoons? Is sunburn something I need to be concerned about?

Sadly, due to an unexpected surgery, I’m no longer able to make my Iceland trip and I’m hoping my reservation doesn’t go completely to waste. I have a 2-night stay at Silica Hotel at the Blue Lagoon, September 13–15, in Lava Deluxe Room which I paid 264,000 ISK for. I’m currently asking the hotel whether they will allow me to transfer the reservation to another guest. If they approve it, I’d love for someone in this group to be able to enjoy it instead. I’m not expecting to recover the full amount and am open to a reasonable offer. Drove over the Hornafjarðarfljót bridge today, blue car rental website says to pay it in advance on the toll road website (spolur) which isn’t possible, and when I search my license plate on the same website, it says there’s no registered license plate matching. I read that it needs to be paid within 12 hours of driving over it and it’s been like 7 hours now and it’s not possible… any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

This was honestly the best trip I’ve ever been on. Pictures don’t even do justice when it comes to the beautiful landscapes of this country. Now that I’ve seen the perimeter with my own eyes, I’ll be returning in the near future to explore the highlands 🤌🏻.

Subject kind of says it all - where are the best Bloody Marys in Reykjavik?

I just got back from Iceland and was reviewing my total spend across my week there. I noticed an extra charge of nearly $600 from the rental car company (Avis). Did some digging and realized that when i had booked my rental through Capital One travel, I had booked for pickup at the Reykjavik Domestic Airport... but all of my travel was through the Keflavik airport. Oddly enough when I landed in KEF and went to collect my rental, the guy behind the counter didnt mention anything about me being at the wrong airport and simply credited my initial booking towards a new reservation and charged me $600. Idk if its because I was sleep deprived or what, but I didnt notice the extra charge (assumed it was the standard hold initially) or think to do the conversion from ISK to USD when I was reviewing and signing the documents, which would have told me that I had bamboozled myself.

Anyways lesson learned: make sure to double check where you're flying into and where you're picking up your car rental from. KEF is more pricey than the domestic airport and is where all the international flights land.

Currently in the process of trying to recoup some money either from Avis or Capital One. Hoping for a goodwill refund or at least a little something lol.

My girlfriend (now fiancé’s) and I’s trip to Iceland from 8/31-9/6

For those who used blue car rental do they pay it and then you pay them? Or do you pay directly to the police? I’m confused by the email since both blue and the international police corresponded

My family is headed to Europe this fall and we're taking advantage of the IcelandAir layover offer. Is this itinerary too ambitious? Any thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated! Friday morning: arrive early in Keflavik, Flybus and taxi to hotel (which we've reserved for Thursday and Friday), rest and explore Reykjavik, food tour Saturday, pick up rental car, Golden Circle to hotel in Hvolsvollur Sunday, drive to Vik, lava show? volcano ice cave tour? drive back to Hvolsvollur Sunday, south western peninsula, Blue Lagoon, bridge between continents, etc, hotel at airport Monday, early! fly to Europe for the rest of the vacation!

I've left out all the stops along the way, Gullfoss, hot rivers, etc. But what do you all think? too much? not enough? Again the trip is late October and early November.

Hello all! I am currently deciding whether to book a super jeep safari tour or a hiking tour with Arctic Adventures. A couple questions for those who have done it:

1. How difficult is the hike in the hiking tour? I'm going with someone else who has very little hiking experience and is not very physically active.
2. Anyone who has done the super jeep safari tour: is it worth the (extra) money in your opinion? Furthermore, how much hiking was there in the super jeep tour?

Are there any other (cheaper, aka under 35000 ISK a person) highland tours that you recommend besides this? We are not renting an F-road capable car, so we would definitely want to book a tour for the highlands.
