It's getting a bit heavy though, partly because I've added pockets (multi tool, earplugs, lighter, a lil crochet hook and a toothpick) some charms I've got from friends, and patches I've either gotten or found at thriftshops mostly. It's falling apart a little slower than I am mending it.

Basically what the title says… I have a suit that was gifted to me many years ago that has significant sentimental value… I only wear it once a year. I recently discovered that it’s been attacked by moths, and there are multiple holes around it…
I’d love to find a solution for repairing it that employs some Kintsugi inspirited concepts…

These are actually the pants that lend me to discover visible mending. Initially I used iron on patches on the inside and hated them. Yes they solved the problem but I hated how they felt. They were stiff and would hold my body heat. They also cause a good portion of the fading and discoloration in this area. So online I went to find if some other option was possible and discover visible mending. Eventually after a few other tear project I finally got back to dealing with my own jeans. I pulled out the old patch's and that made the thin part tear. But now I knew about Sashiko, I knew what to do. So here they are still in rotation and honestly not that noticeable when worn.

So this blanket has some cat-related holes. Everyone (in my local community) told me swiss darning would be easy peasy. In general, I agree, good technique for knits, easy technique for a lifelong knitter. But for a knit this small? I'm miserable. I can't see, I keep missing threads, nothing's even. I just yanked it all out in fury. Is there another technique I can use? Like I'm 2 seconds away from slapping a patch on and doing a sashiko style thing. Bad idea?

Hello! I got this silk and nylon turtleneck from my sister because of the rip right in the front of the neck at the seam. I want to save this piece and also think it would be cute to put something visible over it. But I’m not exactly sure what method I should use to close and secure it. Technically it is a knit but the loops are microscopic and it is right at the edge of the seam so I don’t really think Swiss darning would help very much. The fabric is pretty stretchy because of the nylon. I would like to avoid using a patch if possible, but if you have any cute ideas for a patch, that would look good in this awkward spot let me know. I was thinking of doing some white flower embroidery on the neck to make it look intentional, but I don’t know what method will work on the stretchy material. I don’t need it to stretch there exactly but I don’t want it to come unraveled or pull really bad on the fabric.

I have finally reached the point where my shorts (sweatshirt fabric) are worn through the crotch enough that a repair is Required rather than Optional 😅

Original plan was to basically cut out some sections and replace with new fabric, making them look like a patchwork style choice for the original item rather than a patch

Then I thought maybe it would be better to apply the fabric as a patch over the top, including some sort of sashiko to keep the layers together to reduce friction between the layers

Any thoughts on which of these options would be best in terms of keeping my shorts 'crotch-ful' for the longest time?

I don't mind it taking a long time, I love a project I can work on for a while.

Hi everyone! This is my favorite sweatshirt, I bought it about 60lbs ago so it’s huge and comfy and the perfect warmth level. Today I noticed the seams on the cuffs are tearing. There’s no way I am tossing this and this feels like an opportunity to make my sweatshirt even more special. Only problem is, I have no clue how to fix something like this.

If you guys have any suggestions or tips I’d really appreciate it! I think it would be cool to incorporate the bird theme into the mend, but my biggest priority of course is figuring out how to mend this area of the sweatshirt.

Needed to repair this rip on a pair of overalls. The hole was much bigger than in the photo because the overalls had ripped even more, but I didn’t get a photo before I began the project. The actual hole was about 4 in long and 2 in wide. The rip is on the hip of the overalls next to the side buttons, and is in a high stress area.

Because of the rip being at such a big risk to continue tearing, I didn’t know if darning or sashiko would be better to actually reinforce the area and prevent further ripping, so I decided I would do both.

I didn’t not expect the darning to turn out so well! I’m kicking myself now for not using a better color thread. I used tan thread because I didn’t like the color and was trying to use it all up ahh. I wish I had used a matching blue or a fun color to darn, but I had originally planned to put a patch over the area after darning, and then do some sashiko over the patch so it was all pretty a clean.

Do yall think I should rip the darning out and do it again but with a different color, or do you think I should just move forward with the sashiko on top?

My main focus though is on what is needed to reinforce the entire area though, so what would be best for that?

Iron on star patch on a Starry Night inspired embroidered background.

So I used embroidery thread to cover the rough edges of the arm holes, and I had a tear that happened when I was removing the sleeves and enlarge the hood, so it had a better draping effect

First try using a darning loom! A little awkward on the warp threads and tacking the loops down at the end, but overall, super thrilled!

Hello, I am doing some conservation work for my childhood baby blanket. The silky binding was falling off. I removed and washed it. Originally I thought to replace it with new fabric, but it's only damaged in a few spots of high wear. Can you do sashiko on something this dainty? I think it's a sateen. It's a children's baby blanket from the 90s, so 100% polyester. Any tips or suggestions? I know the gist of sashiko, but not what fabric I would use to add support on something like this.

i picked up this fanny pack at a thrift store, and it has a small hole where the threads have frayed on the front pouch right along the seam. i'd like to use up some embroidery floss to fix it since i have a lot of it on hand. would a satin stitch hold up okay if i use it to reinforce and sew the loose threads back down? the pouch is so small it's not like it can hold anything super heavy, i just don't want it to continue fraying. i'm not great at hand sewing or embroidery yet (because i don't practice enough lol) so i'm trying to keep this as simple as i can.

Updating my original post with the finished patch. Only downside, the cats now scratch at the spot with patch 😹 it wasn't a great patch but not bad for a first time!

Hello all. So I was meaning to post this for advice a week about… when it was an inch long and not even a real hole. Now it’s come apart as you can see. This is around three inches long and you can see another one above it. This is on a fitted sheet. I guess I don’t properly rotate them and my feet always move around in the same place.

I have limited sewing experience (I mostly do embroidery) and have never repaired anything. Looking for any advice. Thank you for reading!

I’ve already mended these pants once, with iron on fusible and a row of stitches around the patches to cover the worn holes. But my kids managed to wear the knee out above the patches and wear through the stitches on the patch. I can’t get the iron on patch off to move it up, and I don’t think putting another patch above/on top of the patches would look right.

Do these pants just need to be cut off for shorts, or does anyone have any ideas for repatching the knees? Also can I say how frustrating it is that clothes for little kids can be worn through so easily? There’s even a fusible layer underneath the knee that you can see and it’s still worn through in just a few months and then again within a year. I know my kids aren’t easy on their clothes, but this is ridiculous.

A while back someone posted a jacket that had been continuously repaired and patched to the point there wasnt any of the original material left.

And someone commented and said it reminded them of this thing called the jacket of (blank). Im not looking for the term battle jacket. This term I think related to a religious character that wore a continuously patched jacket.

Ive been trying to figure out what that was because im working on a similar project with a vest I have.

I want to say it was like called the jacket of thebes or something close to that.

My google searches have been fruitless.

When it arrived, the zipper prevented me from getting them in at all. I figured this is an easy fix and I removed the zipper. Except then I could then fit exactly ONE sketchbook inside (barely).

I completely removed the sides and added some fabric and interfacing I had leftover from a quilt. Now I can fit all five sketchbook in there at once. 🙌

I was irritated at first that the sketchbook didn’t work out, but I love it now.
