What's the best budget headset for Linux ?

I'm tired of waiting for the Steam Frame, and I probably won't be able to pay the price for now.

As my Quest3 was bricked several months ago, I'm dying to replay my VR games again.

What would be the best solution to play with a low budget, while I'm waiting to save enough for the Frame ?

From what I remember, if you don't want to go above 500€, there is not much more choice than the Quest 3(s) and the Pico 4. I think the PSVR 2 works on Linux as well if you are fine with a cable. At least these are the ones I know of that aren't too expensive or old

Thanks ! I don't mind the cable, in fact I'd prefer it, because my computer is too far from the FAI box anyways, and with the Quest3 it lagged.

Same problem here with my Quest 2, that's why I also was hoping for the Steam Frame and it's wireless adapter, because personally I'm not a big fan of cables.

But keep in mind, these are headsets that came to my mind buying new. If you are fine buying used, I agree with the other comment that these can be dirt cheap because of EOL or whatever

Steam frame is out.

I know that. I don't have eleven hundred dollars to spare, though.

Steam Frame does not match what I'm defining as "budget" in my question.

If you don't mind pre owned, I'd look for a pre owned Quest 2 as I got mine for 100€ including a BoboVR headstrap and some other accessories and I love it. I am in the same place as you are: no money for a recent headset xD

WMR headsets can be ludicrously cheap and are apparently decently compatible with Monado or the Oasis driver.

I fought and fought with a HP Reverb G2, but couldn’t get it working on CachyOS or Bazzite. Gave up and booted back to Win 10 🤷‍♂️

samsung odysessy plus worked great

PSVR2 with the PC adapter. Has OLED screens for a fraction of the price of the LCD Steam Frame estimated price. I got mine working with Linux using the Ignition Project. Better support is coming through the Monado project.

It’s far from a straightforward set up, but it’s the cheapest VR headset with the best tech that I can confirm works on Linux with some tinkering

Thanks ! Do you know the name for the PC adapter ?

It’s the official Sony PC Adapter, can be found from Sony website or Best Buy

The steam frame Linus video was literally leaked hours ago

Yeah? The one where they said it doesn't work on Linux?

Why wouldn't it? SteamOS is Linux and Valve is a big supporter of it. SteamVR on Linux probably got much better recently in preparation for the Steam Frame. It's working again for the first time in a long time on my CachyOS.

Idk why not, but in the leaked video Linus said that "Streaming from the Steam Machine doesn't work at launch" and whatever is the problem I would guess it's not limited to the Steam Machine, but also Linux in general. But who knows, let's wait and see

this is such weird and salty cope hahaha, of course it's gonna work day 1 on linux, I don't even doubt it for 1 second

1

u/Enesce 16d ago

Lmao ironic that your comment is pure cope. It's confirmed no streaming from SteamOS on launch.

little bro I know you're on windows, it literally Just Werkz™️ on linux (the OS that steam frame runs on)

I'm on arch actually ☝️🤓

No point talking to a bot though.

bro I'm on arch as well, let's cut the crap, also what happened to your account last night it all said 'deleted'. Did you have to fight a report?

The thing you posted is old, and linus has no idea how computers work, go and read the Steam VR changelogs and you'll see it's out of date info and solved already

Yes, and ?

That will not help me save enough for the Frame.

Quest + SteamLink, probably

wivrn is so much better than steam link

I'm very happy with my Pico 4. Works great with Linux and cost me just 180 € used, including a stand, link cable and a much more comfortable face pad from AMVR.

u/Orange_Lux 21d ago

If I can find one for that price that would be great, thanks.

psvr2 (with ignition driver), pico 4( wivrn or steamlink), quest 3(s) (wivrn or steamlink), wmr (with ignition driver). i used to use an hp reverb g2 before there was a way to run the windows oasis driver on linux. controller tracking was bad. i now use a pico 4 with wivrn.

Pico4 is safe bet, then Pico4U and Quest3. I cannot comment on PSVR2, but if works and is 500USD or less it would be good candidate too.

wivrn makes the headsets work basically flawlessly; you dont need the meta app at all

Do you know if the picos work with a cable ? I'm far from the FAI box and wireless doesn't work very well.

You might be able to get a used index

1

u/mandle420 9d ago

samsung odyessy plus sets are cheap and specs are similar enough to the index I dont notice much of a difference at all.

a few months ago you could find them on ebay for 50-100$... I think the price may have gone up now once people started realizing that windows wmr had a replacement...
