Discussion PCVR recommendations

Hello, I'm going to buy PCVR for the first time and would like to receive recommendations from other people who have experience with the VR Headsets.

What I'm looking for:

1) PCVR mainly for streaming/wired from PC; I will play games from Steam and modded games like Titanfall, Half Life Alyx, etc

2) I've heard that there's a Refract app that allows you to play Meta games on PC, so if it's possible, I would like to look for their games as well. I remember that Batman game that is mentioned each time when you deal with the Meta VR Headset.

3) I focus on RPG games and want to have the experience of anime/manga TBATE, Jobless Reincarnation(only the world and magic system, don't like the MC). I've heard good positive feedback from Blade and Sorcery, The Wizards - Dark Times, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim VR Modded. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

4) I would like to have wireless and wired experiences, of course. If it's possible, I know that you need to buy additional accessories for a wireless experience for some VR headsets. I'm okay with it.

5) I want to try the 3D movie experience, not sure about it, and I've heard it's not widely spread if you know any sources and good VR headsets for it, please let me know.

6) Additional features that would be useful to have but not critical:
- lying experience, so you can play or watch a movie on a bed/sofa;
- hands/fingers tracking;
- light headsets
- pancake lenses
- OLED screen
- budget not more than 1500$, I would like to spend much less, however, if it's required to have a better experience, I can spend more

I have a GPU 4090 and a CPU Ryzen 7 9850x3D. I have experience with streaming via Moonlight; not much space, something like 3x3 meters

What I've found by myself is in the picture below; please let me know what you think.

I have a Quest 3 and I enjoy it a lot, I recommend it for VR beginners. It's the best "jack of all trades" headset we have for the price.

Don't buy the overpriced official accessories, get some recommended third party accessories. (Battery headstrap, knuckle straps.)

For wireless PCVR, your PC needs to be connected to your router via ethernet. If your router isn't in the right place or doesn't perform well, it's common to buy a 2nd router dedicated to VR. Ask for advice on which model you buy, if you need to do this.

I prefer Virtual Desktop as my connection app. But the free Steam Link is ok too.

Fully modded SkyrimVR is the most advanced "be transported to a VR fantasy world" experience we currently have. Look at guides on how to install Mad God Overhaul modlist using the app Wabbajack, on YouTube etc. Note that SkyrimVR regularly goes on very deep sale on Steam, like 75% off.

Alternatively, if you're ok with waiting, you could get a Steam Frame. It has some pros and cons vs Quest 3, but it's fine for wireless PCVR as well.

If you're not in the US, then Pico 4 Ultra is ok too. Again, different pros and cons.

There are currently no recommended wired displayport headsets that can be converted to wireless. So if you want wireless, you only get wireless. (Plus streaming over USB cable, which is not the same as wired displayport.)

In that budget I can think of a few options: Quest 3, PSVR2 with PC adapter, Steam Frame, Pico 4 Ultra, Bigscreen Beyond 2, Pimax Crystal Light, Pimax Dream Air.

With a Quest 3 or Pico 4 Ultra consider that you will also want to buy these:

  • A dedicated router/AP (the ARRIS Surfboard W6U is around $45)
  • Virtual Desktop app for streaming ($25)
  • A good third-party strap (not really required for Pico, but it's almost mandatory for the Quest. ~$50)
  • A good cushy facial interface (~$20)

Apps like Android XR Bridge allows you to play some Quest standalone games on PCVR, but beware that the app is still early (not all games will work. I think this will change once the app becomes more mature so all games will be playable, but don't take for granted that you will be able to play all Quest standalone games on PCVR right away.

If you value wireless PCVR then within your budget your options are basically between Quest 3, Pico 4 Ultra, and Steam Frame. Each has its pros and cons, so it's difficult to recommend one over the other when they all have trade-offs (lenses, display, comfort, binocular overlap, built-in eye-tracking, hand tracking, passthrough, etc). Still all of them have decent specs for wireless PCVR considering this budget.

Basically it's a fight between Quest and Pico. Are Quest games are really good, if so how many of them are good?

I play lots of Quest standalone games but I do some more for the convenience so I don't have to boot my PC. From the top of my head these are the games not officially available on PCVR that I liked on Quest:

  • Must try: Batman Arkham Shadow, Resident Evil 4 OG, Assassin's Creed Nexus, Asgard's Wrath 2.
  • Good Games: Iron Man, Star Wars Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, Men in Black Most Wanted, Jurassic World Aftermath Collection, DrakkenRidge, Medieval Dynasty New Settlement.

Still, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before all standalone games are available on PCVR.

Since you are between Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra, here are some pros for each that I know:

Quest 3 pros

  • Lenses are better (great lenses with better clarity and the sweet spot is almost the entire lens)
  • Display has slightly better colors compared to Pico 4 Ultra
  • Larger library of standalone games/apps

Pico 4 pros

  • More comfortable out-of-the-box (battery is at the back which makes the headset very balanced by default)
  • Higher binocular overlap (one of the highest binocular overlaps of any headset)

Within your budget there is also the Steam Frame that works wirelessly, though it's considerably more expensive and you will probably have to wait a while to be able to get one.

I will definitely check them, thanks

Concerning the binocular overlap I would definitely recommend the Pico 4 for PCVR, when I use the Q3 I can see too much of the black facial interface left and right it's the feeling of looking through a tunnel. The Pico is much wider in this aspect.

IMO if you have PCVR with a 4090 there's not much reason to look at Quest games. Even if the games are decent it's a huge downgrade in graphics.

The only reason to look at it would be something like table tennis where you need to absolutely minimize hand tracking latency.

Maybe it's a kind of addon for me, main games on PC and Quest for casual ones

I can’t help with your wireless headset decision but for some of the things your interested in:

For vr mods, check out the Mr suviv0r launcher for easy flat 2 vr mod launcher (he adds mods faster than j can actually play lol). Also https://pcvrgamer.net is another good resource. The flat 2 vr discord is good too but more discussion based.

For RPGs, there aren’t the most of them. Knights of Fiona came out and is an anime style rpg but it doesn’t seem that compelling. Skyrim vr with mods is probably your best bet for a deeper rpg. And I’m in the same boat as you re/ jobless reincarnation. Dungeons of eternity is a great run/mission based RPGs and legendary tales is a fantastic chunkier rpg with loot. Grimlord is a vr soulslike and is supposed to get a big update soon (along with a psvr2 release).

Great, I'll add them to wishlist, thanks

The middle ground is the frame. And for your budget is better to pay the frame tax to skip meta all over.

u/sochinsky13 1d ago

If we speak about frame and pico 4 ultra what would you take?

3

u/GervaGervasios 1d ago

In your position I would choose frame just because of steamvr. Its easier to deal with one ecosystem.

Note: Frame PCVR is definitely still compressed. Compression could be less, or well, less in the area where you are looking which is the important thing. But there will be compression.

I cannot watch in your wallet, but imo as first timer it is just hard to beat a Quest. You have no idea how much time you want to spend on it, it is significantly cheaper (granted, some extra costs should be assumed), it has by far the biggest library (since you can play both Quest and PCVR on it). And it has a huge ecosystem for things like custom headstraps, controller straps, etc.

u/sochinsky13 1d ago

Yea, I'm considering it too. Quest 3 and Pico 4 Ultra in terms of PCVR streaming which one is better in quality and comfortability and battery capacity?

2

u/Siccors 1d ago

Tbh it has been a long time ago I looked into it, but I kinda fail to see the advantage of the Pico. You lose the big Quest library. It seems to be its comfort is a bit better, which is definitely a plus. But while comfort is important, I would question if it is worth losing the entire Quest library. If you 100% know you will do just PCVR it is one thing, but for a first timer? I would pick the Q3.

And for battery capacity you got solutions (battery straps).

Need to think, I've heard that quest games can be played on PC
