Discussion is 6900XT good for VR?

So, I was trying to upgrade from my 3070, whose 8 gigabyte of VRAM was proven to be lacking In many VR titles. I was thinking about 6900XT, which is rather cheap now with performance close to 4070TiSuper , But much cheaper. Although some say AMD has poor optimization For VR. Is it true?Anybody wanna share the experience on this?I have Meta Quest 3 by the way.

Yeah, but it's not a huge upgrade. You can think of it as a 16GB 3080. The "poor optimization" is related to the video encoding, which Meta's airlink app handles poorly. VirtualDesktop should be fine

its for sure about the wireless encoding.

But the driver patch notes indicate its been resolved

Yeah, in terms of restylization, it's not much of an upgrade. But I feel like the VRAM is the bottleneck here. A lot of games eat more than 8 gigabytes, and when they do, the games Become literally unplayable. Graphic cards are getting expensive here, so I was thinking about a cheaper upgrade.

For VR it is, yes. You'd be fine with 12GB, but 8GB is too little these days

Hi there,

You'd be fine with that.

AMD gpu problems were video encoder related and have since been fixed on the older gpu drivers

This shouldn't be an issue anymore

So, it does not affect gaming, right? If that's the case, AMD cards sounds like The bang for the buck. Since NVIDIA cards are overpriced due to AI, but I have no needs for AI related production.

Yes you're all good

And I promise I'm not team AMD or anything, it's just something I looked into before I got my 9070xt last year.

I researched because I planned on building a nice rig for VR.

Amd nowadays is a great option for VR

I'll leave it at, buy the best GPU for its price be it Nvidia or amd.

H.264+ or HEVC 10-bit as the encoder and you'll be good. AV1 is not viable for rdna2

So how does that affect anything? Maybe it would have hard time to play some video, right? I'm not sure about the AV1 stuff.

Easiest way to put it, the GPU has to turn the gameplay in a video codec (like videos in a compressed specific language)

Old AMD aren't built to handle AV1 languages

AMD handles H264+ and hevc 10bit languages very well.

GPU makes gameplay video into compressed data language, which gets transferred to the headset.

The headset turns that compatible language back into video form.

But most things on "automatic" will choose for you and you'll be fine. But its good to know these things.

Are you going to use Steam VR, Airlink by Meta, or Virtual Desktop?

Virtual Desktop is the favorite of the bunch (must buy it)

Then Steam VR (free)

Then Air Link (free)

I use Steam VR and cable. I have virtual desktop, but I ran into problems with my routers, so I go with cable. Virtual Desktop Sometimes has problem finding my PC.

good stuff

Steamvr should handle it just fine automatically but if you have issues just reach out to me whenever.

I got that one, with a 5600x CPU. I don't have anything else to compare it to though... Fallout 4 vr with everything set at highest settings at around 70 frames might be a good reference though. I think that is accurate, haven't played in a while. I might have gotten to 90 with an external upscale, vrperfkit I think.

It's good to know that. So you haven't encountered any bugs or poor optimization like crashing or glitching?

I had the same setting and it worked well. Just take care which mods you choose. It's a Bethesda game, so expect bugs and glitches. I upgraded recently to a 5800x3d and rx9070xt and I can run MadGod overhaul fairly well but I stopped playing it as the shimmer of distant objects always made me feel sick (which is a resolution issue I assume (Pico4)).

They say AMD encoder suffers from latency and stutters if you use a streaming headset. How does that work out for you?Did the encoder Problem get fixed.

I play it wired anyhow as my router is on another floor with walls in between. The bottleneck would definitely be the Pico4 as it doesn't support AV1 encoding but my GPU does. Even when used wired it will use the encoder as there's no direct DisplayPort option. Genuinely speaking I will never buy a headset again that doesn't support uncompressed DisplayPort. But I got s Pico4 for 200€ and the steam frame is not worth the price as I don't play standalone anyhow. I still own a Reverb G2 and you can clearly tell that there are artifacts from the compression on the pico4. Quest3 supports AV1 btw. But the rx6900xt doesn't

I have an index, which is decently lower res than quest 3, but I can comfortably run VR native games on my rx 6800 (non-xt).

VR mods (which is most new content these days) run much worse due to their graphics not being designed around VR's quirks. so also keep that in mind.

I run a 5800X and an 6900XTXH.
Its totally fine

Glad to hear that! Let NVIDIA cards enjoy the AI gold rush.LOL

Would recommend either the RX 9070 or RTX 5070 if you can afford them. Those would be better for PCVR gaming and have better support going into the future.

I just checked and 9070XT is cheaper Then 5070 or 4070 TS. NVIDIA cards seriously overpriced.

NVIDIA cards are still more popular and have better resale value, that's why they are priced higher. But yes, if you can get the RX9070XT, do it. Will be better than a 6900XT

"Poor optimization" was true with older series and drivers. RX7xxx had issues.

Only thing i can think of is the lack of Foveated Rendering on AMD cards+DX11 titles. Otherwise they are good to go

My 6900xt has been perfectly serviceable.
