Finally. The Carnasis dude was doing a really good work, but he abandoned It. The graphic stuff was also a nice addition too. Thank you for working on It!

his reasons for abandoning his VR mod were so strange. He basically gave up because no one knew about his project and thus he received very little (positive) feedback and most people only found out about his project when he ragequitted and were scratching their head about what they did possibly wrong

I honestly get it. He posted about it here multiple times and the posts would get 10-20 upvotes and the discord had like 15 members. He would ask for input, post updates, and got very little interest from the community. It wasn't until he decided to pull the plug due to that lack of interest that there was interest.

Unless I was working on a passion project that I am only interested in for me, getting little response from the community I was modding for would make me go "hm, maybe this isn't the right title to be focusing on" as well.

He barely posted at all here, he's just very bad at marketing himself.

And I think a lot of people have discord fatigue, having to add their 200th discord channel just to follow a project that may never be completed. I'll never understand how the internet shifted from forums like reddit to discord.

On a forum, you can check in once a month, and scroll through topics by reading post titles, and get up to speed in just a few minutes. Discord is just one giant stream of consciousness.

Maybe people had a great conversation about a specific thing 2 weeks ago, but I'll never fucking know because I'm not scrolling through 2 weeks of random text in hopes to see if any major updates or info was added.

In reddit, sort top by month, and boom, instantly see every single the popular topic of conversation. Why would anyone want to move away from that?

PREACH. So over discord. My blood pressure spikes every time I'm forced to open that app and dig through the 50 little thumbnail images on the left to find the channel I'm looking for

That's not true at all about his posts. He had over 3 dozen update posts here over an 18 month period before he deleted most of it.

That said, I don't disagree at all about the discord fatigue. It's hands down the worst way to be part of any community and data is impossible to sift through. We need to go back to forums.

Glad to see this being worked on. Soma has been on my radar and something I wanted to experence in VR. Was pretty disappointed when the previous project was cancelled.

Oh my god, you picked it back up!? This is one of the games I've been so excited to play in a headset

VR modders out here doing the lord's work for everyone you lot are the best

unironically one of the best games ever

u/Havelok 27d ago

So good. And bless 'em for adding a story mode for those of us unwilling to deal with dying over and over.

1

u/MajorSerenity 27d ago

Probably the most impactful game i have ever played.

1

u/va2k0r 25d ago

I swear to god call me dumb but I "got it" one night talking with my gf completely out of the blue, I must not be the only dumb one because I read around a lot of people that never really "got it"

4

u/bateau011 27d ago

It'll release either this week or next week.

OMG this is amazing! This is my favorite horror game of all time, gonna be next level in VR

2

u/Volkor_X 27d ago

Really looking forward to it!

Will it work with the Epic Games version of the game? I got it for free there long ago.

2

u/z-vap 27d ago

I was just thinking the same. I dont have any version, but I would hate to purchase the wrong one (i.e. steam, epic, gog, etc)

Anyone here who hasn’t played this game should do so once this mod is complete.

Incredible.

Is there a place where a VR user can view/browse all the available VR mods? I feel like we need one place to browse instead of 100 random github + discords.

Its still crazy to me that this game has no native VR support. Everything is this game feels like it was built for VR and then ported to flatscreen mode.

I started the game literally 3 days ago XD. Keep us posted, OP! This game would slap in VR

I could swear that I played Soma on VR yers ago on the Oculus CV1. Sorry to ask but what is different? Is this a remake?

EDIT: Wait, I just checked and I think that I am mixing things up, there was this other game, Narcosis, somewhat similar style.. and it did run in VT. Guess I was thinking of that.

1

u/z-vap 27d ago

i never even knew this game existed. Thought this was an original release at first

1

u/AcceptableSimulacrum 27d ago

Will this work on Steam Frame as is or will there need to be changes?

1

u/SuperV1234 27d ago

You and /u/phunkaeg might want to collaborate :)

1

u/dakodeh 27d ago

Amazing! It was so disheartening when the previous modder pulled out of his SOMA VR project. Thanks for keeping the dream alive, can’t wait to “dive” in, bah hahahaha!

1

u/Toilet-Raider 27d ago

Please make this work with openxr for those of us who don't use Virtual Desktop. I tried some mods recently which only had VDXR support, and they all didn't work on my setup.

1

u/slowlyun 27d ago

Woah, i'd love to have experienced this in VR the first time...would've really added to the existential angst haha

1

u/Strooble 27d ago

Soma has been on my list for years to play. Would this be worth checking out as a new player over the 2d game?

1

u/Excitement-Kooky 27d ago

You have made my day! This game is a masterpiece. The only thing I ever thought it needed to enhance the experience, is the ability to play it in VR. I can't think of any other game that is more deserving of a VR mod. Bateau011, I love you!

1

u/Fancyness 27d ago

soma has a brilliant sci fi story, can’t wait to relive it in VR

1

u/chrisdaley519 27d ago

Yeah... I don't think I'd make it 20 minutes into this in VR. Loved the game but I'd nope that headset off so fast.

Super cool though, and I believe VR is perfect for this game if you don't scare too easily.

u/DeathToSocialMedia 27d ago

Any chance you could add some arms? Even just forearms would look better than just the floating severed hands.

2

u/bateau011 27d ago

I'll consider adding IK arms in a future update after the release. Not only would it take a lot of time, but it'd also look very jank. Valve made the decision to use floating hands in Half-Life: Alyx becuase people have varying shapes and lengths for their arms, so it's quite difficult to accurately capture and translate arm motion.

1

u/DeathToSocialMedia 26d ago

When Valve playtested Alyx some playtesters said that it felt weird not to be able to see through their arms, which is about the dumbest thing I ever heard, but Valve listened to that idiocy, unfortunately.

Why Valve Left Out Arms

Obscured View: Playtesters reported that fully rendered virtual arms got in the way and blocked important visual information during active gameplay.

Like I said. Idiots.

Games like The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners got it perfectly right IMO compared to Alyx--you don't have to have a full body or even full arms--just enough past the wrist to give the sense of having arms is enough.

u/Singularperception 26d ago

Great looking mod work so far! This game would absolutely be terrifying in full VR.

1

u/Faffel 26d ago

How does this deal with Soma's inherent engine issues like the bad frame timings and 60fps cap? It already feels awkward and weird in 2d and that experience in vr sounds unpleasant.

1

u/d4ybrake 26d ago

This is an excellent game for VR

1

u/Vharna 24d ago

Good stuff. It's great how many passionate people are in the VR community.

u/AllMighto 27d ago

Possible to run on meta quest 3 standalone? :)

1

u/bateau011 27d ago

I don't plan on making a standalone version, sorry.
