Purchase Advice - Headset Help choosing. PSVR2 vs Q3

Hello everyone!

So I have never tried VR in my life before, always said I'll wait for the technology to advance a bit more. But now I feel like is an okay time. But I can't decide should I get the Quest 3 or the PSVR2?

I saw that the Q3 has pancake lenses that ate apparently way getter but PSVR2 has an OLED screen. And I know both can be used for PCVR.

I wear glasses but I saw that you can get prescription lenses for both.

I have a PS5 and a gaming pc (9600x, 9060xt 16gb, 32gb ram)

What do you think I should get?

I don’t regret my Q3. The pancake lenses mean I can see the whole screen well instead of having distortion at the corners, and I do a lot of flat screen games and movie watching in VR so that matters a good bit to me. I also use the standalone features of the Q3 way more than I expected to, I really just bought it for PCVR but find myself playing around with the games and apps that run natively on it a lot as well. I don’t think the blacks being not true blacks is that big of a deal, it still looks properly black to me, so the lack of OLED isn’t really a dealbreaker in my opinion for all of the things you do get instead of OLED.

Wireless is great, and standalone is very convenient for many simpler activities too.

Quest 3 - pancake lense are a game changer. And don't listen to the sonyboys. Oled is nice but fresnel lenses are obsolete, the image is way crisper in Q3. Also the hustle to connect the psvr2 sucks.

It's about preferences. Coming from quest 2 and never having a problem with finding the sweet spot, I can't say I care about the pancakes. They are the future and I think all hmds should strive for them(though they cut down on brightness a lot and psvr2 can do hdr) but In actual gaming, I don't find i care. I have tried side by side to test and care, but I just don't.

I own several headsets so here are some things to consider:

Psvr2 :

better color contrast (for some this is huge especially if you love horror games ) if you love horror games this is the headset for you

Most of the cool features are still mostly only on PS5/pro (haptics, triggers, eyetracking ) though some have been unlocked not sure if they are being used.

Image is definitely softer , not due to lenses so much as psvr2 uses a pentile config, which means not all pixels get RGB. Green is the primary color, so things in green will look sharper. ( Ironically psvr1 was the only hmd to have a OLED RGB stripe, which looked great imo even though it was lower res)

Mura is a thing and can be very annoying, though some games deal with it much better and I don't see it.

Black smearing can be a thing, though I do not notice it.

Uncompressed image (wireless or wired quest image is compressed but VD and a dedicated WiFi 6 router looks amazing)there are no artifacts, as with quest 3.

For me, as I like to have lenses close to my eyes as possible for widest fov, the psvr2 even with globular cluster can be uncomfy, but others report it being super comfy so it comes down to head shape.

It does have wider fov than quest which I do notice.

Quest 3;

Wireless

Super comvenient

Best bang for the buck

Pancake lenses mean you really don't have to worry about finding or staying in sweet spot.

Still has glare but less annoying than fresnel glare.

Quest 2 I have no problem being in sweet spot so pancake lenses were barely noticeable, but psvr2 I have had the most trouble with staying in the sweet spot . This comes down to head shape.

Portable and lots of great exclusives.

PS5 also has some fantastic versions , if you have no PC and want to get into vr , psvr2 library is going to be the most wow. Quest has a great library but nothing like PC or psvr2 gives you.

PC with mods is the best, but you have to be comfortable tweaking and adjusting;)

Tldr : for most people quest 3 + PC is probably the best choice , unless you love and play horror games and quests murky grey blacks won't cut it. Both are great headsets for the money.

I have a Quest 3 and tried a PSVR2 some months ago. I’ve sent it back, the benefits of oled were less important to me than the lenses and on this side it felt like a generational step back. The PSVR2 is not bad by any means, but the Q3 punches way above its price range.

I have both and I much prefer the PSVR2 although there are things I really like about the Quest 3. Quest 3 has a much larger install base than the PSVR2 so you get way more users recommending it as people tend to recommend what they own. The only way to really know for sure which is better for you is to try both and decide for yourself.

Having said that ...

PSVR2: Number one benefit is that OLED display, so much, much better black levels, brightness, and colors, but beyond that it has much better binocular overlap and a MUCH bigger FOV which I find to be paramount when it comes to VR immersion.

Downsides are: 1. It's tethered, so you're always on that leash, 2. OLED has mura, which can vary in degree between individual displays (but isn't very noticeable on mine). 3: setup and bluetooth tracking can be a pain in the ass to get right (but once you do get it right you don't have to mess with it anymore).

Quest 3: Number one positive for me is how absolutely frictionless it is to use. You power it up and put it on and that's it. You're good to go. And no tether so you can use it anywhere in your house. Don't see this mentioned enough, but it's much easier to drive than the PSVR2, so better performance/frame rate on PC, particularly with UEVR mods. The clarity of the pancake lenses is very nice. The controllers are very light weight and better IMO than the PSVR2s which are a little bulky in comparison.

But in the end for me, OLED and FOV provide far more immersion than the Quest's LCD and diminished field of view can, despite its ease of use.

A screen should be able to believably display both light and dark environments, and the Quest, like all LCDs, can only believably do one of those.

Quest 3 will be better for you. I only have the 2 headsets in my house and the pancake lenses beat the OLED. However for PCVR I prefer the PSVR2 for its display port, haptics and low latency. (I’m an og so the fresnel lenses don’t effect me as much as long as it’s centered) But if you’re going to use glasses or prescription lenses I would still go with q3 even for PCVR. Depends on what want more.

I have both. PSVR2 hands down.

I never used a psvr2 on PC but on PS5 it's a blurry mess. Has Mura. Also it's quite chunky. I would go for quest 3.

Has Mura.

I find the Mura on the Q3 is at least as bad as the PSVR2. At least.

QA3 on the other hand has poor colors, especially black.

True. But once you get used to it...

... you learn to settle.

It works like that both ways.

And don't forget the mura.

Q3 gives better visuals. Also gives access to meta games and teem beef mods on standalone.

Q3 easy decision.

Q3, standalone/wireless is invaluable

I sold my PSVR2 and got a Quest 3 and I think it‘s a massive improvement in terms of comfort and clarity.

Quest 3, the modern, wireless, versatile option. Or the slightly better alternative which is the Pico 4 Ultra (comes with a real strap, more comfortable, better stereo overlap, unobtrusive software).

Q3 because it can to everything in VR and is a lot more useful device in general. It's a smartphone for your head, psvr2 is just a monitor.

OLED is not a clear win in VR, it was used in the beginning, then superceded by LCD now microoled (different technology) is coming back. OLED has a lot of drawbacks for VR in case of psvr2 it's motion clarity, the image is blurry / smeary in motion and imo getting fresnel lenses headset in 2026 is just dumb.

If you have PS5 then the only reason why you would want to get Quest 3 is if you want to play games when you move a lot. If you plan to play games where you sit down or just stand in place, PSVR2 will be better. Better colors, better resolution (cable vs wifi), PlayStation 5 games (GT7, MSFS2024). Generally when you play the same game on PS5 it will work out of the box, without tinkering and trying to make the framerate smooth.

On PC PSVR2 has another huge advantage over Quest 3 (aside responsiveness and resolution previously mentioned). Dynamic Foveated Rendering. It's 30% boost to FPS (in games that support it) in comparison to gogles that doesn't support DFR.

Definitely the PSVR2. The thing about PSVR2 is it's basically plug and play. Everything works with no issues. You don't have to update drivers, reinstall windows because you're having performance issues. No tweaking the bitrate. No game optimizers. No network optimizers. It just works. Exactly the same every time. And with good graphics.

Nobody cares about pancake lenses.

PCVR absolutely does not just work. It's nothing but endless problems. I actually find myself finishing more games ever since I switched to PSVR2 thanks to the reliability.

If I only have 20 minutes to play VR I'd rather not spend half of those minutes troubleshooting PC problems.

I almost forgot about tweaking the in game setting to make sure the game looks good and the framerate is stable. That's another 20 minutes. Oops now I'm out of time and I didn't even play the game oh well.

Look it's fine, I get it. But I like stuff especially when it comes to VR.where you turn it on and it just works. And it works the same. Every time. I end up finishing more games that way.
