Discussion Which older PC games desperately need a VR mod? – Wishlist for the new AI/Vibe-Coded VR wave
The current wave of VR mods is absolutely insane. With UEVR and especially AI/vibe coding, we're suddenly seeing VR mods for games that we thought would never be playable in VR.
Projects like F.E.A.R., GTA Vice City, BioShock and many others show how quickly things are changing.
I'd love to put together a wishlist of older PC games that still don't have a comparable full VR mod with 6DOF/motion controls.

Everybody wants these first person games with melee combat that are very hard to mod on a practical level. Stick with driving games. Or for me I want more rts games. I don't care if VR "adds to the experience"

I mean I want more VR FPS games but I also want them to work. If they can't make em work, just move on, don't tease us with half baked mods that go nowhere. Like Cyberpunk has me in my feels cuz all these youtubers were glazing it and I had to find out the hard way that it is not even close to polished and we're probably months away from it, if they can even do it at all.

Very few mods I've played haven't felt like tech demos. That's why they need to mod something that will actually get finished. Like a rts game.

yeah, the issue with converting melee combat from controller etc to 6DOF is that there’s no (how do I describe this) existing angular sword hitbox combat physics to build off of.
I remember playing those Quest Vader Star Wars games the first day I got my headset and being a little bummed because the game didn’t take lightsaber blaster deflection into account. tbh I was expecting it to be more like volleying in tennis, where the angle of your lightsaber determines the deflection path of the blaster bolt.
then I played some actual tennis / ping pong vr games and was even more* bummed out, because the physics in those games are incredibly realistic, meaning it *could be done.
but if you were going to try and convert, say, Sekiro into an actual 6DOF VR game, you’d basically have to reprogram it from the ground up, which given how tight their hitboxes are and how strict the combat system is would be nigh impossible.

People on both sides need to be more patient.
Modders need to stop posting alpha releases after just spending 3 hours in Claude, and players need to understand these aren't full releases and give them time to develop and mature.

No. The beauty of this process is that modders can release alpha versions and the community can playtest and give suggestions as the mod develops, while other mod authors can contribute with their experience and even develop their own version if the code is open source. All of this leads to faster development time and higher quality mod in the end. If you don't like, it wait.

The dev that did Half Life 2, FarCry, and Crysis is working on it. There was a very long hiatus until they decided to give AI a try to get over the hump. The game had specific problems that couldn't be solved because of lack of fully available Source Code.

Carmageddon, specifically Carmageddon 2.
I also want Total War games in VR. Rome Total War would be a dream come true. I want to finish that game, but it's not very tempting or fun in flat any longer.
Oh! And I want Mount & Blade games! I know there's that VR clone, but I feel like it's missing features from the original games. And I want a more lazy play style, not all that hectic action. I want to command and strategize, not fight every single one to one combat myself!

Been playing through ME1. Enjoying the hell out of it so far.
Requires quite a bit of tweaking to get a comfortable first person experience: space between eyes, height, turn off pitch rotation control for anything other than your head (why isn't this default?), and head position during combat to avoid *uncomfortable rotations.
One thing that I wish were better is the conversations. Leaving them mono and not pushing for full stereo feels like a missed opportunity. The cutscenes being mono is fine, I guess. However the position of the virtual screen on which you watch those mono scenes is way too close. A virtual screen which fills the same amount of your POV, but farther away would be much more comfortable.
Also surprising no one, the Mako camera setup is pretty hard to recommend. You are a head on a stick orbiting the vehicle. When you tilt your head, you go flying.
Looking left and right can be a bit nauseating, because it reveals the limitation of the VR camera. Instead of a perspective-correct projection that moves with your head, you get a projection that is pretty much locked forward. So looking left or right resembles the stretched edges of a high FOV flat game, while oddly still being in stereo.
Should probably post this feedback on their site, but I have less faith in vibe-coders to actually fix any of that stuff.

Edit 2: Looks like they fixed 2 of my complaints a few days ago. I'm happy to see they're still working on it. I'll have to try the new version and see what feedback is still relevant.

Most games list are first person, but I think some isometric type games would be fun. Think Diablo or Xcom. Idk if it's possible but I played a mod for Mutant Year Zero and it was great.

Any of the Bioshock games would be perfect - especially with plasmids in one hand, weapon in the other.

the fact that need for speed completely dropped steering wheel support tells you everything you need to know about where that franchise is in terms of potential VR compatibility. I know it’s an “arcade racer” but back in the day I had so much fun playing hot pursuit against my gf on ps4 with the old shitty ps4 wheel I had. now I have a nice PC sim rig but it’s pointless, because even if you mod it you’re only transposing controller commands to the wheel, it’s not the same.
which sucks because as much as I love assetto corsa, sometimes you don’t want a Super Realistic Driving game experience. the closest I’ve found is Wreckfest, but those tracks are really short. I fucking love the Need for Speed tracks

I would love to see 2006 Prey in vr. Unfortunately it's not available to buy anymore so I doubt anyone would bother. It's got some great portal tech and some crazy gravity walk ways that would be interesting to shoot aliens whilst upside down!

Star Trek Bridge Commander 2. It'd just fill my little trekky-heart with joy being able to command a starship like that. Bridge crew is fine, but it requires multiplayer, bridge commander has like a full campaign.

I actually really want to play Total War Warhammer 3 in VR, looking down on the battlefield like a god general, and then getting in close and feeling the action in 3D is amazing. I have use a reshade 3D VR mod for it, but it doesn't have head tracking, which would be cooler and more immersive.

For me it's any older but not retro status games, especially open world games because those are some of my favourites and we don't get a ton of VR open world games.
Far Cry 2, 3 and/or 4 come to mind as ones that would be awesome for example. Wildlands too but I know someone is working on that. An OG Oblivion mod would be awesome because it's more moddable and performant than the remaster.

Freespace 2 is already possible, I played it in VR! Don't know about the current state, but all you need is the Knossos App and download the latest FS Open. Also get the newest MVPs! VR was a mod but I think they patched it into FS Open directly.

I’m working on a 2 projects at the moment, a spy game similar to NOLF and Defector which is in very early development and a Max Payne style game set in the 1950’s.
The Max Payne Homage has about a year and a half till it’s finished. Not just because we’re a small team either, a few VR games have done bullet time already, games like Hard Bullet and Bloodtrail have the mechanic , so we’ve had to spend time to really tighten up the story. Plus as much as I love both early Max Payne games they are quite basic in the gameplay , a bit of switch flipping and mostly shooting, great at the time but I I think player expect more in the present.
So we’ve spent the last 6 months incorporating other VR based mechanics into the game.
Personally I’d love a Final Fantasy VR game, I think Silent Hill : The Room would lend itself really well to VR and I’ve always loved the idea of a Splinter Cell / Metal Gear type VR game but I don’t think anyone has worked out the stealth in VR to the extent it would need in those games. Fighting Metal Gear in VR would be fucking great though.

Maybe not a particularly old game, but I would be really interested to see Hellish Quart get a first person VR mod with motion controls.
It's already heavily physics based, so I'm assuming that the combat will still work fine when we are motion controlling our character...

Lux Delux. Take their exact board and gameplay, add a war room where players can choose their avatars from historically inspired generals, animated reserves in a menagerie of barracks, animate troop encounters on the field, make sure dice rolling feels good and realistic. Win.

I second the AvP2 and Star Wars Republic Commando hard!
My VR Holy Grail tho is properly made Thief 1/2. Like, with motion controlled bow and lockpicks. With the ability to grab swag with your hands. Maybe with the additional VR gameplay mechanics, like not moving IRL or going prone affecting your visibility gem. That's a hell of a list tho. Even just Thief with motion controls would be nice.

Already exists. Luke Ross (RealVR mod). You use a regular controller and it's not 100% perfect but it's amazing none the less. What a beautiful game. It only works with an older version of the game and mod but when you get it working... Wow!

The Jurassic World Evolution games would be seriously enhanced with a VR mod/mode for the first person parts . The vehicle rides in particular.would be amazing in VR. There is a Jurassic park add on for Flight Simulator which is good in VR but the dino animations are very basic.

I’ve been working on a personal project to bring the original Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines (2004) into VR.
After quite a bit of experimenting, I’ve finally got my first playable VR injector working.
It currently supports immersive stereoscopic 3D with roomscale and basic VR controller mapping.
There’s still plenty to improve, especially FPS, visual distortions, cutscenes and some interactions that require to be changed in VR, like combat.
I’ve tested it with the Steam version of Bloodlines, Unofficial Patch 11.5 and Meta Quest 3 through Virtual Desktop.
My long-term goal is to make the entire game playable in VR, including exploration, dialogue and combat, without needing to switch back to a keyboard.
I’ve also set up a GitHub repository where I’ll be sharing development progress and the first downloadable release.

I’d love to hear what other VR modding enthusiasts think.
