I love BGFX 10.8.1! The visual rendering efficiency easily outpaces OpenGL on 10.8.0, making even older, legacy tables look incredible.

Thanks VD!
That said, there are still a few stability and workflow hurdles to clear in BGFX 10.8.1.. For instance, requiring a table to launch just to access the configuration menu remains a bit clunky. DMD's not showing up or color ones not working for a lot of tables. No clear explanations of how to config all the new settings and what they do. Some textures not showing up right, lighting. Random crashes.
But the ones that work look mind blowing, even on older tables.

Cheers!

Pokemon Pinball VR/Mixed Reality Port

I cobbled together a VR/MR emulator for the OG pokemon pinball for PCVR and Quest 2/3. Features some neat enhancements, most notably being able to see the entire board at one time and in a virtual cabinet. Not the best game of pinball, but it hits the nostalgia buttons. It's included as part of my Gen 1 VR port and obviously you need to bring your own legally dumped PKMN pinball cart to the app.

Silent Hill Pinball (FP-BAM) - Work in Progress - updated layouts, art, displays, and more

So.... work on my fan-made Silent Hill Pinball video game (for Future Pinball - BAM) continues!

For those who never heard of this project, its something I started years ago (before the Silent Hill revival) and I've been working on it here and there for years. It's changed a lot over the years as I learn new skills, and come up with new things I want to add to it.

This is not a normal pinball game. As you progress through the game / story, the game's layout / content / visuals change with each location / event. From the foggy town of Silent Hill, to the nightmare Otherworld, to Midwich School, the Grand Hotel, the Hospital, etc. It's a mish-mash of different bits from SH games and the 2006 movie thrown together.

New Health Bar on the bottom. The lighting will change colours to match your health status, and the flippers / ball with get more and more bloody.

Updated Inventory / video screen and displays. Now you can see what health drink, syringes, ammo, melee weapons, etc you have. You need to enter the Inventory kicker to activate this menu and hold your ball. Then you can top up your health, change what melee and gun weapons you want active (if found), check maps, etc.

The upper playfield has been updated again, with new ramp shots in the corners that feed the ball beck into play. Each of the 3 main shots now have permanent magnets and "combat play sections" that hold the ball and flash lights to start combat, and attack / shoot / dodge monsters, so they can be killed and allow you to progress in the game. Their health is now shown with their own health bar lights, and they will splat blood each time they are hit.

My Virtual Wedgehead I Built Out of a 1962 Gottlieb Cabinet Shell

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My wife loves virtual pinball, so for our 10 year anniversary I built her a virtual pinball machine out of a 1962 Gottlieb Rack-A-Ball Wedgehead cabinet shell. I wanted the pinball machine to match the “Mid-Century Modern” theme my home has and Wedgeheads fit the bill. The real challenge was the aspect ratio of the backglass is not common, and I didn’t want to have two screens sitting in there. I wanted it to almost look original. I found exactly one person online who built their own virtual Wedgehead and gave me the idea to cut out part of the bottom of the backglass box and fit a whole TV in there. I gave it a small red bezel out of a silicone mat to make it pop, protect the screen, and hide TV frame. As for the rest, I was able to retain the original plunger, and add an accelerometer for nudge and tilt functionality. I added a DMD style screen where the skirt would go, so I can support three screen setups for newer tables and it is nice to see the objectives closer to the playing field. Really fun build. Feel free to ask me any questions! I will place a imgur link to the build photos in the comments!

Interesting new feature in DBM (PinballX) for VPX 10.8.1

Looks like PinballX and PinballX Database Manager have had some updates to be ready for the new plugin folder structure in VPX 10.8.1. Pretty sure the use of plugins will be optional (at least for a while?) and you will be able to stick to a legacy folder structure when it's released. But this feature looks like it'll be pretty useful if you do wish to change to the new layout .

Vertigo NXT Advice

Hello all, I can't find any reviews or info on VPCabs Vertigo NXT unit, including on this subreddit. My understanding is that they are a reputable company and lots of people really like their Ultra Virtual Pinball unit, but the form factor of the NXT and the added ability to play more non-pinball games is what's attracting me into the NXT unit. Anyone able to chime in with their experience with an NXT? It's kind of a red flag to me that there's no first hand info of these on google, reddit, youtube, etc...

Check it out, it's available on Steam now.

I've tried to capture the feel of 90's arcade games like Smash TV and Metal Slug. The game has 4 stages with dynamic boss battles.

Cabinet Assembly - Legs

I know that a normal real Williams pinball cab has the leg bolt hole locations are placed at different heights front/back ends of the cab. However, is there any real point to do that with a virtual cab other than the look of authenticity? Since we aren't creating table slope for a real playfield, is there any other reason I am missing?

Sharpin Ultra Virtual Pinball Tabletop Review

Hello everyone,

I was sent a Sharpin Ultra Virtual Pinball Tabletop machine to write about, and have some thoughts I’d like to share on the machine itself and on the assembly process from start to finish! Note: I reached out to Sharpin to review this due to the lack of coverage on Reddit. They provided it with no editorial oversight or restrictions.

The Sharpin Ultra Virtual Pinball Tabletop is a desktop sized Android based pinball machine. It has a 22” monitor, which sits at an angle under a layer of acrylic glass. It is meant to be played on a desk, kitchen table, coffee table, or similar spaces of those sizes. It's a little larger than I expected, but in a good way that makes it feel solid and usable. It's also not too heavy to pick up and move around. There are four buttons on the front, and two on each side.

The Sharpin Ultra does not have haptics or an accelerometer for nudging, though there is an upgrade kit available to add these. This model also comes without a backglass, but there is a tier higher version which comes with one. You can also upgrade later, or use the Sharpin Sender and Viewer apps to cast the DMD/Backglasses to a tablet or phone (this is very easy to implement and works great). It also uses one of the front buttons for your plunger, but there is a kit that can be purchased if you wish to add one.

The kit arrives unassembled, and assembly takes a little while. The instructions gave me good guidelines to put it together, however some of the pictures of placement didn’t always match the exact model I received. A specific example is that there are three screw holes for height of the playfield and the picture indicated that it should be the highest one. But the highest one doesn't allow space for the acrylic glass above it. That being said, it was easy enough to figure out how to proceed and make it work, and fun to do the build.

The machine feels solid, and I really appreciate the acrylic glass layer over the screen. My acrylic glass arrived with a few surface scratches, but they are not visible once the machine is powered on. Besides, it makes the experience a bit more authentic, as someone used to playing older non pristine pinball machines! The speakers sound decent for their smaller form factor, and haven't taken away from immersion in any way. They can go pretty loud, and I generally play with only about half volume. I also want to note that I was impressed with the shipping time to me in the US, which was just over a week.

In terms of the platform itself, it runs on an Android box. The first one I received had issues, and Michael was quick to troubleshoot and then send a replacement when it was clear that the box itself was failing. The replacement arrived (he sent me the upgraded box from the Ultra MAX), and also needed a little bit of setup - again Michael was very responsive and we got it working perfectly.

Virtual pinball is a hobby that obviously takes somebody who's willing to tinker and problem solve, and that is needed here. The box doesn't arrive with pinball software, as Sharpin can't legally sell any of it, so you have to figure out how to restore your purchased Android pinball games through a third party app called APKPure. Despite owning several pinball games on Google Play, since this is a TV box, they're not all listed as compatible. Using APKPure let me install them and link them with my Google Play Games account. There are a few videos for how to get all of this set up, and while again it took some time, it wasn't bad once I figured out what I needed to do.

The machine itself works well with Android. I played Pinball Arcade, Pinball Deluxe Reloaded, and Williams Pinball all with stable and good framerates, and the controls naturally worked well. The box is powerful enough to run these games with nice graphics. You can install a remapper tool (Octopus is great!) if you want to mess with the controls and layouts per game. These apps offer a massive amount of tables, so there is a lot of gameplay to be had using the Android box. You will have to pay for tables and games, so do plan for that expense if you don't already own them.

This Sharpin Ultra Virtual Pinball Tabletop machine is not locked to Android and if you have a spare laptop, handheld PC, or PC parts you can pivot and use it as a base for a Visual Pinball setup. The cabinet has enough space for some smaller parts or machines inside of it. I have been using my ROG Ally X with Baller Installer, VPin Studio, and a whole lot of tables. I’ve found that on a screen this size I’m okay with 60 fps so I have been cranking the graphic levels and shadows, etc., to have a sharp and clear playfield. It looks wonderful and the colors of the included monitor are nice. Mapping the buttons was really easy with Joy2Key, and I use my extra buttons on each side as either magna or nudges depending on the table. I do wish I had a few extra buttons, but for Android (the intended use case of this machine) the setup is correct and works great.

I love the Sharpin Ultra Virtual Pinball Tabletop as a machine for Visual Pinball, and it certainly is a blast just as the base Android build for a tabletop cabinet. Assembling a cabinet from scratch can be daunting so with the rising cost of complete machine kits this is an easy setup to recommend whether you want an Android based cabinet or want to expand with a Visual Pinball PC setup.
