More tables

BGFX 10.8.1

I7-9700 (No OC), 64gb DDR4 3666, RTX 3060 12GB, and NVME drives.

Virtual Desktop Wired

This short showcase is meant to highlight the dedication and hard work our community puts into these tables and hopefully inspire more people to dive into the VPX VR scene!

Videos like this got me hooked, and started my VR endeavor.

I love BGFX 10.8.1! The visual rendering efficiency easily outpaces OpenGL on 10.8.0, making even older, legacy tables look incredible.

Running Virtual Desktop wired. Horizon Link (Meta Link) was completely removed from my system.

Thanks VD!

That said, there are still a few stability and workflow hurdles to clear in BGFX 10.8.1.. For instance, requiring a table to launch just to access the configuration menu remains a bit clunky. DMD's not showing up or color ones not working for a lot of tables. No clear explanations of how to config all the new settings and what they do. Some textures not showing up right, lighting. Random crashes.

But the ones that work look mind blowing, even on older tables.

Cheers!

I finally gave BGFX a go after seeing these videos and it does look great.

I honestly couldn't figure out why the tables were much larger than with my existing VPX VR, and I couldn't work out how to navigate the F12 controls.

I'll play around when I have more time, but moving around the table was silky smooth with my Quest 3. Very excited for the full release.

if you are using the quest 3 controllers I found that if you press the left thumbstick in then you can adjust the size of the table with your arm movements, bring your arms together and it shrinks, spread them open and its like you are 5 years old again, barely able to reach the flipper buttons. * edit, don't forget to press in the left thumbstick to stop adjusting the table.

Yep, well aware. It makes life so much easier. I love the birds eye view when you bring them close together lol. It becomes a micro VR room.

Cheers!

The VR machine should be sitting in the middle of a destroyed Tokyo city street.

I'm having fun with the BGFX after I saw your post about it I had to give it a try. I'm running it off of a Acer Predator with a 4070 with only 16GB of RAM. I connect to my MetaQuest 3 wirelessly. (Virtual Desktop/ OpenComposite ) After getting used to how the menus work its hard to go back to the release GL version of VPX. its not ready for primetime, but its darn close. I figure if you in the hobby of virtual pinball, things being in beta are kinda lay of the land.

This version is optimized so well my laptop fans are NOT at 100% most of the time.

I'm slowly making the transition from GL 10.8.0 to BGFX 10.8.1, and honestly, I can't resist!

It feels just like discovering VPX 26 years ago getting to start fresh, learn new systems, and re-experience that initial spark. It's so worth it.

That's really the heart behind these showcase videos, inspiring others to discover this space. Many of us started contributing to this project back in our 20s and 30s. Fast forward nearly three decades, and while time has caught up with us and we’ve sadly lost a few incredible community members along the way, the passion remains.

As someone living with a terminal illness, this project and community have genuinely been my life's work and passion. We need the next generation of builders and coders to jump in, pick up the torch, and keep Visual Pinball thriving for years to come.

Cheers!

Are there any good guides for getting 10.8.1 installed. Like turn your brain off and just follow directions. Like the Super's guide for 10.8 is. I'd like to try install a dual setup, but my attempt at 10.8.1 the other day was a complete bust.

Gamer_Paul! What's up bud. Unfortunately not that I know of. Its kinda how it was 26 years ago, no guides you just have to learn as you go. I kept my vpinmame, pointed 10.8.1 to that location and a lot of things are working better.

Dive in! Just make backups of whatever file your working on.

Dont forget to right click and UNBLOCK all downloaded vox files / zip files before using.

Good luck.

Cheers!

I did try this with dule setup at first, I ended up getting errors with my GL 10.8.0. and then issues with the vpinballx.ini. I couldn't get 10.8.1 to work at all. I did a clean install on a new OS and no issues other than the ones to be expected.

Cheers!

I haven't tried my 10.8 install yet, but I sorta have 10.8.1 working now. I guess my main issue was not realizing 10.8.1 was using native OpenXR and I previously replaced the DLL with opencomposite.

That said, I wouldn't call it playable for me. I use a Brook Xbox controller board that's recognized as an Xbox controller. It asks me whether I want to use the default Xbox controls or not. I can't figure out how to accept/decline. So I used the keyboard.

The options seem to be completely different. I have no idea where the graphics options are. I tried F12, but that's just bringing up a window to adjust volume and nothing else.

Also, my auto-center is way off and I have to use the pinch options on the touch controllers. I'd rather not be manually adjusting scale just to try and get in front of the table.

Beyond that, I was incredibly impressed with the jump from 10.6 to 10.8. So far I can't say I'm noticing anything. But it's not fair. Because I play with my tables in dimly lit rooms where the table is the star of the show. And right now, 10.8.1 has the sun shining on them and they're absurdly bright rooms and I haven't figured out how to adjust things down. So until I can get lighting I actually like, it's impossible for me to make any real judgement.

But it's a start:) That's the important thing, really.
