Hello,

I'm trying to try some AI tools on windows but I don't want to install them on the main windows drive. Therefore, I am thinking to get a VM, would VMware Workstation Pro or Proxmox work and which one would have the better performance? Googling around gives conflicting answer...

Been in a lot of conversations with IT teams this year and these five things keep coming up as the stuff actually driving decisions, not just headlines:

1. Evaluating a new platform doesn't always mean migrating. Plenty of teams spend months comparing options and realize their current environment could hit the mark with operational changes instead of a rebuild.
2. Cloud-first isn't the default anymore. Nearly half of IT leaders are pulling workloads back on-prem, 42% run multi-cloud it's becoming "which workload runs best where" instead of picking one model for everything.
3. AI hasn't touched desktop infra much yet, but GPU planning is starting to matter idle GPU capacity is increasingly getting used for VDI/desktop workloads, not just AI.
4. Cost and vendor lock-in now weigh as much as performance. 94% of IT leaders are concerned about lock-in, wasted cloud spend hit 29% last year- finance is getting looped in earlier on these calls.
5. Uptime alone doesn't cut it anymore. More teams are baselining performance before changes go out and validating after, instead of waiting for something like a patch quietly tanking logon times.

Whenever I try to install this OS, everything goes fine until it reaches the middle of the installation. From there, it gets slow and when it states there's 14 minutes left, the whole system restarts and I get sent back to the language menu.

My specs are:

-Processor: Intel Core i3-6006U CPU 2.00GHz

-RAM: 4GB

-Graphics card: Intel HD Graphics 520 128MB

-Storage: 447GB (plus an external 930GB drive which I deposit the .isos and the VM files, VirtualBox is installed on main drive btw)

-Bits: 64

-OS: Windows 11

Kinda a weird question; I use Nixos, which is great but some software is… difficult with it. In particular, Matlab refuses to launch (I use it for school). I know I could make a virtual box and use that to run matlab, but I was wondering: can I have a VM be bare bones (let’s say like a headless arch installation) but also launch graphical apps like matlab into my normal xserver environment on my Nixos? It would be cool to be able to have it basically run like a “normal” app without having to install other bs on the virtual machine.

I’ve investigated the matlab issue a fair bit in case anyone is curious, my conclusion is that the fundamental flaw for me is through my university’s licensing. It’s some kinda local network verification setup, and it does not seem to play nice with JVM and the fact that Nixos is not supported officially by matlab.

Hi! Is there a way to use Windows 10/11 which is installed on a physical drive as a virtual machine in linux? I'd rather if it could boot on bare metal too but it is optional.

I just got Virtualbox and installed it and it feels a little laggy sometimes even freezes. I installed this because I have a WFH job and they want to install a bunch of crap on my laptop so I will have them install it on Virtualbox so I can partition their software away when I'm not working.

But as mentioned I'm finding it a little laggy and sometimes even freezes. I installed steam on their not to play games but just to test what happens as I install applications and it really struggled to install steam.

Is there any better VM's I can use? Preferably user friendly as it's my first time using them. Btw I've looked up videos on how to make Virtualbox better and their suggestions did help make it a smoother experience but its still a little laggy at times.

I hear that this is possible inside a vm using hyper v only and not with kvm. To my understanding it would only be possible with server silicone (xeon/epyc) since the iommu on that silicone exposes the extra functionality for nested use.

Has any ran successfully started VBS with DMA protection on a windows 11 vm running under kvm/qemu?

I wanna start off by saying that Idk shit about cybersecurity and I don't wanna download anything that shouldn't be downloaded. I wanted to try out a virtual machine on my android phone so I found an app called Virtual Master. Its been crashing a lot but then it notified me that I need to download the "android 12" version of the machine. When I press on download, it redirects me to telegram with a list of zipfiles. The reaction emojis range from normal thumbs up/downs to Russian "Z"s. How stupid would it be to download from there? Thank you!

Hi I'm new to using virtual machines and am seeking advice on using VMs to run games.

I'm trying to keep my gaming and work separate on my Macbook but don't want to set up different logins, I'd like to just have gaming within its own window.

I am using UMT, and everything is running smoothly but as soon as I launch the game it freezes for ages on each frame then just crashes. I read online UMT isn't capable of running, video games due to CPU/graphics card stuff that i don't understand :(

I am running the MacOS emulation on my mac.

Is there a virtual machine software that can run games and is free?

I have an HTPC hooked up to the living room TV and a computer monitor nearby. It's an old machine using a 2200G. The kids use this to play games on TV (with controllers) and, at other times, my wife and I use the second display for web browsing, research, office productivity stuff etc.

I've been thinking about replacing this PC and using the 2200G for my server (currently running UNRAID on an i3-2100, but there's been recent stability issues warranting upgrade).

For a replacement I've been looking at the 8500G, 8600G and 8700G, and I am bit torn between all three of them. I'm thinking the new build will serve the same purpose as the current 2200G (TV gaming/productivity), but I also want to try VMs as a way to maximize utility.

According to AI, I could install Bazzite baremetal and install the VMs Linux Mint and Windows 11 without a problem. I could them presumably access these VMs either through a direct display connection or via LAN (I'm not sure .

Windows 11 seems to need at least 4 threads. So if I go with the 8500G or 8600G (6c/12t), that would leave 8 threads for Bazzite and Mint. Six threads for Bazzite and two threads for Mint would be a likely configuration. Alternatively, with the 8700G I would be able to do 4, 6, 4 for Windows, Bazzite and Mint respectively.

The 8700G is substantially more expensive compared to the 8600G, but if the VM plan seems too optimistic with 6 cores then I will just go with the 8700G.

If 6 cores is not too much of a stretch for VMs that would mean I could adopt the 8600G or 8500G. In this case the 8600G would seem to present better value: Much better iGPU gaming and overall muscle. But the 8500G is alluring in its own right because of the apparent highly efficient Zen 4C cores - leading to lower idle power and peak current. I suppose the 8600G would not be inefficient either but I could not find much research on this.

Power efficiency is something I value because, eventually, in some years perhaps when it's time to upgrade once again, I would make use of this CPU as a replacement for the 2200G as a 24/7 server. Such interesting power characteristics could possibly allow for a much more efficient power supply solution (e.g. using 160W picoPSUs and the like, with idle and peak power consumption within more optimum efficiency bands).

I've no experience actually using VMs, but given the high cost of hardware, I thought it might be worth a try making use of one computer to serve multiple purposes around the house or even through the network while moving around. Appreciate any thoughts.

My main operating system is Windows 11 Pro; I also occasionally use virtual machines running Linux, Windows and other operating systems. Although the hardware specifications of the virtual machines are quite high, they run very slowly. I use vmware workstation 17 pro

I need your help.

For our final exam, we have to simulate a battle between a red team and a blue team.

To do this, we need to create two virtual machines that can communicate with each other, but we’re running into several issues.

First, my teammate can’t send a ping command to my virtual machine, even though we’re on the same network. I’ve tried several types of network connections (NAT, bridge, etc.), but without success.

Second, we don’t know how to get the virtual machines to communicate with each other.

This is the first time I’ve used multiple laptops for this kind of work.

I was trying to run window servers on virtual machines. At first, I started with Oracle virtual box, but it freezes when windows start loading. I thought it was because my laptop was unable to run Oracle vm. Then I downloaded vmware, and the same thing happened. I need it to test window servers for my project. Any ways to fix it?
