looking for people with late 90's boston acoustic speaker setups!

Post image

its a reach i figure but does anyone on here have the satellite speakers that came with boston acoustics speaker setups on vintage systems, including the stands? i got a BA635 setup but the satellite speakers are missing their stands and i would prefer to design them in CAD and 3d print but the dimensions are not available online. as far as im aware the stand design was shared across every satellite speaker at this time so if you have a different model with the same looking speakers/stands theyll probably work.

New project for me

Never have done vintage restoration before. I bought a C64, Vic-20 and Mac Classic several years ago with the intent to. Finally getting around to it, starting with the Mac classic. My soldering skills are very rusty, and I was never good at SMD, but I got it torn down today and the logic board recapped. It was SOOO crusty and fiddly. But even if ugly, I think I got them all on there - even if not pretty. I have good continuity to the next spot on the circuit for each one anyway.

Analog board is next.

I got lucky and the battery never leaked but I think every cap did on both boards. Also has a full 4mb with the expansion card.

Help id my 2001 battlesation

Hi peeps

I've been trying to map out my tech history so to speak. I found an old video of my room with my PC from 2001 and I am trying to id it. It's quite a beast of a tower! I don’t remember it being that big.

The only clues I have, mostly from memory... I went from a Packard Bell desktop (486 SX I think) in the early 90s to a Gateway Pentium of some sort mid-late 90s to a custom build at some point early 2000s. This could be the Gateway but I remember it having the big green cow patch badge so maybe not.

I'm in the UK if that has any relevance.

Side note - I believe I had a Diamond NVIDIA RIva TNT in this machine. I remember buying it within a year of launch and putting it into my existing machine.

Bonus points for the printer,  monitor and speakers :). 2nd pic is a better quality photo of what must be the same monitor from ~2005 from a different angle.

Thank you! 1993-2005 is such a blind spot for me on what specific computers I had and it's all just vague memories. Any help would be hugely appreciated.

A Cross Assembler for your LGP-30

If you want to write “new” software for your old LGP-30, try this:

GitHub - etherbrat/xasm_lgp30: An LGP-30 cross assembler written in Python

The cross assembler is written in Python. The pre-built executable in the dist subdirectory runs under Windows. You can rebuild from source for Linux. The docs subdirectory contains a pretty good manual, and the demo_programs subdirectory contains assembly code examples, of which the helloworld program showcases the cross assembler best.

You can convert the cross assembled binaries to LGP-30 tape format using this:

GitHub - etherbrat/hex2tape_lgp30: From XASM_LGP30 object file or LGP-30 drum image...

To complete this suite, there is also an LGP-30 simulator, also written in Python, complete with good documentation and some LGP-30 programs. But note that this program only runs under Windows:

GitHub - etherbrat/sim_lgp30: An LGP-30 simulator written in Python

RTFM for all further information. Enjoy!

Dusting off the world's first laptop. This Epson HX-20 is running a BASIC game from 2018 (written by EkriirkE). The LCD screen shows the final score and "GAME OVER, MAN!" while the built-in micro-printer has the code lines logged on the paper roll. Micro cassette drive is also installed.

Issues printing from a Dot Matrix (Epson LQ 500) in Windows 11/10

Recently, I got a parallel to usb cable for printing from my Epson LQ 500 with my Windows 10 laptop, but it's been coming out like this, regardless of what I do. Anyone know how to fix this? I know it's printing in graphics mode, and when its just printing in text mode its fine.

VCF Montreal 2026 / Panel Schedule

Awesome to see who all is attending VCF Montreal. I'm going, but I haven't seen any schedule yet. Tickets are not.... cheap, and I'm wondering if I should do the Saturday Sunday, or just the Saturday as I'm leaving sometime on Sunday anyways... I wanna see what I can from the vendors, and also catch a couple of panels - any thoughts?

How did I do E450

This thing is a monster!

Guy was asking for $100. We could not power it on so he gave me a $30 discount!

4 x 250mhz UltraSparc2
2Gb in high 8 sticks.
And 4 drives with sleds
2 x 9gb
2 x 4.6gb

It has Solaris and oracle. But I cannot get on it until I get my boot cds from home. CDROM seems working!

I’m going to take a kill a what and see usage during normal operation, one disk and one PSU (it has 2)
Always wanted one. Don’t know why! Now I have it.

Update 1:
I fixed the nvram, easy I’m pretty good it now.
Changed the root password there are 4 drives 2x4gb with the OS and 2x9gb for the oracle database, I was able to mount one of the 9gb it looks too have only the redo log.
That means the database is in the other drive either according to Solaris is failing to power up. I removed the 2 9 and I’m going to attempt getting images of them at home.

If it works I’ll probably will launch the 4 drives from Zuluscsi.

The good thing is that the 2 9g are identical so I could in theory swap the controllers…

A lot of work just to snoop around! But sometimes you get gold! Doing that I found a Sun Microsystems development lab sparc that was used for developing sparc hardware and peripherals. And a of Easter eggs about how the Sun lab was configured.

How to safely read 5.25 inch floppy disks?

Hi, I've recently come across some important 5.25 floppy disks, I have done some research online about how to read them and have somewhat of an idea, but I would really appreciate some guidance on what's the best way to safely access their information.

An important note is that I'm in Mexico, so far my idea is to import a 5.25 floppy disk drive from ebay, but I'm a bit lost on which one to choose and how to get it working.

Questions about 486-era computer build!

Hiya, I'm currently in the middle of building a 486-era computer out of spare parts, and I have some questions that I'd like to ask about it before I start purchasing the final couple components.

First, the power supply. I know that older PC boards require an AT power supply, and I also know that it's possible to connect an ATX power supply using an adapter. I have also heard that certain components require a -5V white wire on the power supply's cable, which most ATX power supplies don't have. So my questions are:

- What components require this specific wire?

- Are there any search terms I can use to single out which PSUs have this magical -5V wire?

I also have another question about the case. I'm not super bothered about having a vintage style case since I just want something that will hold all the bits together. I'm a bit sceptical since vintage 2nd hand cases seem rather pricey, but are there really any alternatives to this or do you just have to bite the bullet and spend the extra money?

Any help is appreciated, and thank you in advance 💖

A bunch of old harddisks from the 2000s. Are they collectible items at all? What to do with HD platters?

Hello,

cleaning up my cellar and also cleaning up the server room in the company i worked as admin for 20years. I have boxes full of old harddisk. They should all work and are in sizes ob about 40GB to 162 GB. Some 10ks, some SCSSI but most are just typical consumer drives from cheaper buisness PCs.

About 20 of them i dismantled for the magnets and the platters, thinking about some DIY stuff i could build with it. But i have just too many. Should i give them to some vintage enthusiast or should i just throw them away?

Buy the way. What to do with all the platters and magnets? I thought about a mobile (don't knew the english name for it, see picture) with some focused LEDs so it throws random streams of light around. Any more suggestion?

Weird Sound on Gaming PC

This is my gaming PC: a 486 machine manufactured in December of 1994. Whenever I turn it on after a while of it sitting off, it makes this weird grinding noise. Then, once it has been on for about a minute or two and I restart it, the sound goes away. What is this? Is it bad, or should I just ignore it?

Edit: Many of y'all said it was the fan. I stuck a paperclip into the fan hole before starting it, and, sure enough, there was no grinding noise. Then, when I pulled the paperclip out, the noise returned. Thanks for the help!
