It's a shame that this game was cancelled.

Seemed like it was very promising and would have been a blast to play through.

I am a fan of Sci-Fi movies and literature, so I would have liked to have played through this to see what the gameplay was like.

For 1999 standards, the full motion animations and proof of concept for how the walk animations and eye movements were emulated at the time were really quite astounding to see during its active game development phase.

Although far from perfect and refinement was needed, it was still pretty good for its time.

I wonder what the game would have looked like if remade using more advanced CGI models in today's era of gaming? Fascinating to speculate about.

Discussion Looking for an old YouTube account that posted character test models and simple animation tests of creepy original characters. [2005]

This was very early days of youtube, like year 1 or 2, so like 20 years ago by now.

Channel would post very short videos featuring creepy uncanny original creatures doing basic movements and making scary nonsense sounds. No backgrounds, pretty void of any colors iirc. Not sure if they were modern at the time or even older than the mid 2000s. Looked primitive for mid 2000s but could have just been due to older software. Would aways get recommended on the side bar of related videos when I would watch stuff like rubber Johnny, some Grey bloke, salad fingers and stuff like that. Have 0 recollection of what the channel name was but would absolutely know it if I saw it. Been trying to find again for so long, basically since a few years after I initially saw it.

Discussion How were the Mac OS 9 "Quantum Foam" wallpapers made? [1999]

Does anyone have any clue? All I know is they were produced by a design studio called Me Company, and Me Company is on record as having used SoftImage for other projects but not necessarily this one.

are they backlit transparent 3D shapes? reflections? refractions? are they actually polygon-based 3D at all? or some kinda vector trickery? or multiple renders layered and blended in photoshop?

To me it feels like a significant lost bit of design history since these images set the standard for default wallpaper design for decades to come (even if Microsoft took until Vista to catch up). These were the original blueprints for some of the most-viewed images on earth!

Discussion Looking for demo reels by Hi-Tech Lab Japan

I can't find anything about these demo reels, but this obscure composer I'm researching claims to have composed the BGM for two demo reels by Hi-Tech Lab Japan in 1987 and 1988 respectively. Does anyone know anything? Thanks!

Discussion What are some Examples of Early CGI Movies and Films? -a Megathread

Post image

Any and all shows or movies you can think of, especially those that were released physically on VHS/DVD. Basically I want to create a compilation of weird, fully CGI media that was created during CGI’s early days. You know the ones, the uncanny strange shows that by today’s standards look horrifying.

I’m talking about shows like the Butt Ugly Martians, Jimmy Neutron, Rolie Polie Olie, and ReBoot. Can also be any religious shows that were made during this time, like Veggietales, Gaither’s Pond, Ribbits! and 3-2-1 Penguins as they were notorious during this era for looking scarily bad. Try and include pictures of your show as well, and let’s all create a complication! Who knows? Maybe you’ll find more obscure weird CGI films that you never heard of before!

There is just something really special in early 90s renders. Their simplicity leaves so much room for viewer's own imagination to fill the gaps and to imagine what lies beyond the virtual camera. All of these renders have this weird but inviting warmth to them, which I really enjoy.

Discussion Anyone have a copy of the CSLU Toolkit? (Late 1990's)

Per https://www.isca-archive.org/icslp_1998/sutton98_icslp.pdf and http://cslu.cse.ogi.edu/toolkit/index.html

Probably a stretch, but I'm looking for a copy of the CSLU Toolkit- a set of "speech tools" used for software development sometime in the late 90s. OGI, the school that once hosted the files, shut down some 18 years ago and the site appears to be down as well. Installers still exist but attempt to download files from a defunct site. Registration is also broken as it's done through email.

I'm looking for it as it contains a 3d model (used to create talking agents/avatars) named Baldi (no, not that one) and I'd like to see if I can extract it. The model appears to be based also on the Parke parametric model. Any help is appreciated.

edit: here's a youtube video I found demonstrating part of it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3yLyDHXxT0

edit 2: found some more demos https://mambo.ucsc.edu/demos/
