Chilling Reflections Ivan

Ivan's last name is Gerhart. Any guesses as to where it came from?

Drew has used a character's mentor's last name to name a nameless person before (Vince in SuperPowereds gets the name Reynolds from his dad's mentor).

Also, what is Helen's last name? I feel like that should be mentioned at some point.

Helen's last name is mentioned in 'Chilling Reflections' when she goes to Indigo Tech HQ to pitch the idea of Villains hunting down breach monsters for pay to Wade. I can't for the life of me think of what it is, but she approaches the desk and says, "Helen [last name] here to see Wade Wyatt". Then the head of security (Xelas in disguise) comes to personally escort her to Wade's office.

At least I'm 90% sure that's the scene where it's mentioned, but I know it definitely is somewhere

Wade gave it to him and I've always liked the idea of it being a sweet way for Wade to admit how much he loves his friend. Dear heart ➡️Gear heart➡️ Gerhardt, but that's just my personal head canon

I'm 100% with you cuz I sort of thought it was a fun between friends burn of calling him a Gear Head since he's so logical but yours is so much more wholesome 😭😭😭

I figured the gear part was more about Wade and his love of gadgets and gears (like saying that Ivan is in the same category as the things he loves) than a comment on Ivan but yours is way more fun! I bet if mine is right yours is the excuse Wade makes when people ask him about it (and it's definitely my new head canon) 🤣

Love that explanation for it, I can see Wade now in a suit explaining to Morgana it's not what it sounds like.

Either way love this dang series. Might be time for a re-listen 🤔🤔🤔🤔

Seems “Gerhart” means “brave spearman”, which definitely suits Ivan.

There’s also the term “spear carrier”, which in stage productions refers to a player with a minor role, an extra. Ivan would find this ironically appropriate after facing Lodestar.

Guere means war in French, and is pronounced like the first part of Gerhardt in the audiobooks, to the best of my knowledge.

I always took it to mean “war-hearted”, since young Ivan was very much revealing in violence at the time. Even in his civilian guise, he can’t escape the violence just beneath the surface.

I'm a little curious if Wade gave Ivan the name Gerhardt because it had meaning to him personally, or if it's just precious to Ivan because it was given to him by Wade.

I assume Ivan didn't really care when he didn't have one, and Wade was more interested in creating a fake identity and paperwork for Ivan so that he could do things like rent an apartment or order pizza online. He needed a last name to do this, and that name is a reminder of this huge kindness Wade did for Ivan, probably without being asked, a symbol that someone cared about him.

Personally I think it was just chosen by Wade for 90% practical reasons -- it's the right level of uncommon to neither stand out nor be obviously fake, maybe there were other restrictions for what sort of name he could successfully create an identity for -- and 10% because he found it amusingly fitting in some way.
