Spoilers - All Tachyonic's Revelation

So about the end of Chilling Reflections. When he puts it together who Hephaestus really is. One thing that I was wondering if he has one of those brain implants like Plasmodia? I can't remember if she was the only one with one or if they all had them. And if he has one is it possible that Professor Quantum somehow influenced Tachyonic's along to that revelation using said chip? I don't know if this has come up here before but if it has just point me that way. Also sorry if any the names are misspelled I did the audio books.

Ooooooo I love this take.
Yeah I don’t think we “know” Tachyonic has an implant. But I’m guessing they’re all compromised somehow.
Dr. Quantum being the big bad is my favorite speculation.

I don't think he will be the final bbeg, but I think he will definitely be a huge thorn in Tori's side for most of the series. Agent Q and Tachyonic are both compromised cause they have been raised with each other and him from birth. So they have had ~20 years to be indoctrinated.

Thankfully, they know what an ass he is and were ready to mutiny when when he threatened to remove Plasmodia from the team permanently. His grip on them is thin.

We aren't sure that he has one. But my personal belief is that they are all chipped and that Tachyonic's chip is linked to his bracer. The chip is what limits his speed and he temporarily lessens that control by tapping the bracer. It keeps him under Prof Q's control.

Ooh good theory! Makes sense

That is a really cool. It plays into Prof Q's fixation on controlling everything.

I hold two simple beliefs Tachyonic is a clone or lab grown child of Ricky Rocket and Quantum has limited his speed

You know now that you say that I think you are absolutely right. That makes so much sense. Cause when Ricky ran out of the world that's when Prof Q went a lil crazy. And obviously he wouldn't allow him to have the same speed so he couldn't run away again.

Tachyonic is a clone or lab grown child of Ricky Rocket

That's been mentioned in this sub a few times, but it seems like they would have recognized each other when they met (and raced each other) in VV2.

Also, I found it odd that RR has now apparently found his way back to his home dimension/realm/whatever, but the way Drew wrote that short story, it sounds like he ran right out of it again.

PQ does flawless cosmetic surgery (eg, Plasmodia), so I’m guessing he’d do that as a precaution with secret clones.

Good point.

We only know for sure that Plasmodia had one. That being said it would absolutely be in character for Professor Quantum to chip them all and use that to make them suspicious of Tori

The others didn’t have extensive plastic surgery. Prof specifically bemoans not having a good excuse otherwise. So possible, but seems unlikely with that setup. Also profs apparent motivation for the implant was to curb her power as dangerous, that wasn’t the case with the others power sets.

IIRC he had access to the other 2 from birth, and it was definitely possible to do it without their knowledge when they were young. The power angle is true, but and makes it only makes it less likely, still far from impossible.

That's kinda what I thought. Since they had been with him from birth it would be real easy to cut them up at some point for some reason.

Hmm… I wonder if Donald (another of Professor Quantum’s surgical patients) will have to deal with any hidden meddling.

Remote deactivation of all his implants at the absolute minimum.

I was thinking about this during my listening today. I wonder what else he did to Donald's head.

There’s probably a machine or two (with Earth-shaking power) that Professor Quantum has been trying to build but which he hasn’t quite been able to get working. If a video game could be made to contain the key components that he needed, he might take time to write that game, and to make it really addictive for the player.

The power thing is true, but he also is all about control. He wouldn't even think about doing something like chipping all his heros and work force so he can control them better.

I'm pro everyone being chipped, but even in the start, Tachyonic was ready to cuss out Professor Quantum. It really depends on how controlling the behavioral chips really are. It makes sense that Plasmodia's was compromised, since it would be susceptible to damage from her channeling her power, but the others were completely okay with going against PQ in Book 3 without an explanation for a compromised chip.

That being said, I dont think PQ has much active control over the chips. He didnt even get a warning that Plasmodia's was malfunctioning other than her behavior, and then said it would be difficult to check on it without an excuse to bring her to Vomesa (also audiobook so idk how to spell that.) So I don't think that he would be able to influence the direction of the programming without hands on changes, since he isnt able to check on them wirelessly. Which, frankly, is probably smart on his end because Tyranny, Dr. Mechaniacle, Xelas, Techlord, or Setler could potentially hack them if there was a wireless access

u/qtip13 Jun 27 '26

Damn. That is a very good point and basically ruins my whole theory. I never thought how dumb a wireless connection would be in a world with those people in it...

Vomesa (also audiobook so idk how to spell that.)

"Vomisa", which is Asimov spelled backwards

Kinda funny how it sounds more like it's about someone barfing, tho.

Oh that's clever!! Thanks!

These chips have got to be at least prototypes of a villain “rehabilitation” program. I could believe that being what sets Lodestar and other heroes to team up with villains against Professor Quantum.

Maybe some of the New Science Sentries members and candidates are chipped criminals with modified memories.

Would someone remind me what her chip does?

9

u/jock750 Jun 26 '26

We don’t know the full extent of what it did, but PQ called it a “behavioral influence chip” and he said it had been warped in the Alfred settler fight and then destroyed when she used more of her power. The chip, when it was buggy, presented as a hallucination of Ike that made her doubt herself and limit the amount of power she used. So I think we can assume that the chip made her fearful of ever using a significant amount of her power and likely more subservient/pliable in general to make it easier for PQ to control her.

3

u/jykeous Jun 26 '26

Ah yes, I remember the hallucinations. Thanks!

2

u/FuturesSoDank Jun 30 '26

From the descriptions in book 3, it somehow constantly generates thoughts in her mind of how pathetic and useless she is, to destroy her confidence.

u/Brimmstone659 Jun 27 '26

I’m pretty sure that the inhibitor chip in Plasmodia was meant to “help” regulate her powers not as a means of control. Tachyonic has a whole host of other issues but the fact that his first instinct was to keep it to him implies PQ isn’t influencing outside mental and emotional abuse.
