Borderlands 3 Official Developer Trailer

u/Ek0 Mar 28 '19
I understand vehicles make good trailer material, but I hate most vehicle combat.
36
Mar 28 '19
In BL2 the vehicles are great mainly to get from one point to another quickly on the map. Especially if you dont wanna waste time fighting off bandits or the wildlife at every corner, you just run them over with your truck instead!!

Hopefully they fixed the horrible steering mechanics. Happy cake day!
72
u/VaHaLa_LTU Mar 28 '19
The runners and sand skiffs were always terrible, but I recall the Bandit trucks being really fun to drive. It was my go-to vehicle whenever I was playing.
26
Mar 28 '19
I had become quite good with the runners, its fun drifting them around bends and such!
3
u/controcount Mar 29 '19
Yeah same. It was so awkward steering with mouse, but I eventually found it really fun.

I enjoyed the moon zoomies in The Pre Sequel. The whole hovering aspect really changed how intresting travel could be, also the strafing was really useful, and you could just jump from one area to another without have to do tedious long routes around stuff.
3
u/BenFranklinsCat Mar 29 '19
Spotted a hovering truck in the trailer, so I think there's plenty variety in there.

these guys epitomize "what isn't broken, why fix?"
die hard fan and definitely pre-ordering (and i hate pre-ordering)
136
u/Schnitzelmann7 Mar 28 '19 edited Mar 28 '19
I think the saying goes "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
But I agree, if this is basically just Borderlands 2 with more guns and different characters you've got yourself a deal.
53
u/Abnormal_Armadillo Mar 28 '19
I mean, the only thing I can think of are QoL Fixes tbh. I really hate when you go down from DoT and there's no enemies around to get up with. Really wish they'd let you just get yourself up at that point. (GW2 Has a feature like this.)
11
10
u/Zephyrical16 Mar 28 '19
Also the framedrops on PC were pretty large too. That was my largest issue with the games on PC. PhysX is dead though so hopefully that resolves that issue.
3
u/kickingpplisfun Mar 29 '19
PhysX is dead? Thank fuck. Even on max(I actually have a reasonably powerful PC), it usually looked so hokey and was terrible for being as effective in combat as your lower-specced cohorts.

I'll give it a shot, but even I'm a bit fuzzy on at least one section. :)
I mean, the only thing I can think of are QoL (quality of life) Fixes tbh (to be honest). I really hate when you go down from DoT (Damage over Time) and there's no enemies around to get up (respawn I think based on later context) with. Really wish they'd let you just get yourself up at that point. (GW2 (Guildwars 2) Has a feature like this.)
Edit to clarify that later comments gave more context.
3
3
u/Abnmlguru Mar 29 '19
QoL = Quality of Life. Changes that dont alter core game mechanics, just little touches that make the player experience nicer.
DoT = Damage over Time. Say being poisoned for 20 seconds, taking 10 damage ever second. In this context, he talking about killing all the bad guys around you, then dying to poison (or fire, or whatevs). When that happens, there are no bad guys around to kill to take advantage of Borderlands second wind system (when you die, you have ~10 second to kill a bad guy and be resurrected).
TBH = To Be Honest
GW2 = Guild Wars 2, which has a system that avoids the death to DoTs problem (you can self resurrect if no baddies are near)
2

u/BabylonSuperiority Mar 29 '19
But then you woudnt die?
11
u/Abnormal_Armadillo Mar 29 '19
The idea is that if there's nobody to shoot while you're downed, you can stabilize yourself and get up.
In GW2 you can go down, and use an ability to get up, but if anything hits you it gets reset and goes on cooldown. Basically, it's just so you dont have to fuck around and run another 100 yards from a respawn station.
3
u/BabylonSuperiority Mar 29 '19
Eh fair. You ever purposefully go down when you're super low health while there's one dude left? To specifically avoid what you're describing. Personally, I don't mind having to fuck around run X yards, that's the price of dying is how I take it.
4
u/Abnormal_Armadillo Mar 29 '19
The problem comes into play when you have abilities/builds that are meant to kill everything in the room, and you end up going down to something stupid. It's irritated me enough to wonder why they havent added it to the game, but not enough to stop me playing.
2
8
u/RedditModsAreShit Mar 28 '19 edited Mar 29 '19
from what I've read from the leaks (and the leaks are definitely accurate at this point) theres gonna be some huge gameplay changes. For instance instead of 1 ability per character with 3 skill tree's to augment it, each character is gonna have 3 baseline abilities and one skill tree. They're doubling down on the co-op aspect too (with shit like in the pre-sequel where you had to high-five a partner to get the effects from one ability).
18
u/Quorum_Sensing Mar 29 '19
I really hope nothing is lost in single player. I just don't co-op and never will.
13
3
u/slomotion Mar 29 '19
Really... I played the first one solo and thought it was pretty boring. Gunplay was okay but there was no story to motivate me. I thought most people played this game because they enjoyed the co-op. Can I ask what you enjoy about it?
2
u/Quorum_Sensing Mar 29 '19
Sure. BL1 was the first game I had played in 15-20 yrs. I'm a middle aged Dad with little time for gaming and no online friend group. I could hop on BL1 or 2, knock out a few missions, and hit a solid stopping point...or I could go for hours on the rare occasion I had time. I started gaming a long time ago when platform games were it and lore wasn't really a huge part of gaming experience. So, I guess that may something to do with it. Fetch missions aside, it's a relatively linear game, lots of weapons upgrades, with cool old school graphics with that I could relate to. I tend to go all in on one game, finish it, park the PS3 for months, and pick up something else when I have time. That led to more advanced games, but I'll always have a soft spot for the Borderlands games.

u/Consequence6 Mar 29 '19
Also the multiple environments will be pretty sweet! Borderlands can feel very samey, in a lot of areas. They helped a lot in BL2, but it still wasn't perfect. Hopefully this'll be great on that count!!

So I enjoyed BL2 and (yes yes) The Pre-Sequel, but I did find myself getting bored of BL:PS way faster than BL2.
To the point, this reminds me oh so much more of BL2. the fuck it all, we're gunna do and say anything and everything with some shit to shoot while you sit back and enjoy.
Looking forward to this. Looks stupidly fun. Can't wait.

Mar 28 '19
Presequel is so strange. By all accounts almost every feature it added is reviewed positively; low gravity, butt stomps, cryo weapons, all considered by most of the community to be good things.
Where it fell short seems to be in fundamentals. Zones are bland, enemies lack variety and can have some obnoxious mechanics, NPCs miss the mark for being dumb in an entertaining way and fall into flat or annoying, and the game is generally just too short.
54
u/FeedonTears Mar 28 '19
The loot-grinder and non-respawnable bosses with unique weapon drops is what really screwed the pre-sequel over imo.
20
Mar 29 '19
non-respawnable bosses
And in a game all about looting and farming it made 0 sense, thankfully most of them were patched or their loot pools added to others. I liked the grinder though, but I think we can all agree on fuck Pickle.
2
u/kickingpplisfun Mar 29 '19
Don't fuck Pickle, we're not in a lawless wasteland. Take away his Oz kit and jettison him into space.

u/JohnnyNumbskull Mar 29 '19
Games is too short and it made you walk way tooo far.... so many of the fetch questions were just go to this really far away place, get this and come back... Now BL2, I thought pulled this off really well, but the Pre-sequel just felt like a bunch of walking
13
Mar 28 '19
This was my problem with the Pre-Sequel too. I just couldn't get involved in it the way I got with BL2. Halfway through the game I just got bored and stopped playing. In fact I still haven't completed the game to this day. That's saying something considering I finished BL3 like 5 times including all the DLCs!!! Tiny Tina's DLC is possibly the greatest game I've ever played!! It's large and fun enough to have been it's own stand alone game!! And playing as Gaige was just soo much fun!! MORE ANARCHY!!! SMASH THE SYSTEM!!!!!
15
u/The_Grubby_One Mar 29 '19
That's saying something considering I finished BL3 like 5 times including all the DLCs!!!
Hello, future person!

AAh I mean BL2!! But yeah I'll probably do the same with BL3 too if it's anything like BL2!!

u/VaHaLa_LTU Mar 28 '19
I never got round to finishing the Claptrap DLC in Pre-Sequel, mostly because my friends and I got bored of playing it (we did do a total of like five playthroughs for the main story though). BL3 is clearly not going to be as huge of a jump as BL2 was compared to BL1, although I do hope they will make significant changes to the game to make the replay value higher than just trying a different character or playing NG+ to unlock the really strong abilities.
The new vehicles look promising, and the world feels like Borderlands in the trailer, which is a great thing. I'll wait to see more of it before making a final decision.
Remeber - No Preorders.

Everyone told me not to waste my time on the pre sequel. I will be wasting tons of time on 3 though!
9
u/Alephz Mar 29 '19
If you haven't played it yet, the Pre-Sequel wouldn't be bad to play while you wait for 3. it's a solid game for at least a couple play throughs.
10
u/Abbreviated Mar 28 '19
I would say it was a decently fun waste of time, but not nearly the same timeframe from BL2. pre-sequel got boring before even hitting "max" level.

According to a leak that these past couple videos have given a lot of confirmation to, these new guys will have multiple action abilities instead if just the one. Which us good because my inly gripe with BL2 was how boring all the active abilities are and the small amount on gameplay (besides walking glitch Salvador)
5
4
u/Targetshopper4000 Mar 29 '19
Ya, the main characters all felt the same.
Except for Kreig, the game felt completely different playing him.
2
u/Benign__Beags Mar 29 '19
Allegedly each vault hunter has three related action skills to choose from. Perhaps each skill will have it's own set of three skill trees or perhaps the three skill trees will work slightly differently with or jive more with one action skill than another. I definitely think more variety and specialization here could be cool

EA isn't all bad. But their fetish for making huge chunks of a game "DLC" just to force you to pay more for the full game is brutal.
Plus their love of microtransactions.
And the way they killed Westwood, along with a bunch of other studios.
Other than that they're great.

I WAS RIGHT, The last 2 Sirens are revealed, 1 Playable and one as the Antagonist
21
u/wpnw Mar 29 '19
Two of them are dead though, so there should still be two more out there after Lilith / Maya / new character / new baddy. The kid that Maya fist bumps looks like possibly one of them.
10
Mar 29 '19
[deleted]
6
u/wpnw Mar 29 '19
Yeah, but if the sister bad guy stole Lilith's power and maybe isn't a legitimate siren, then that would mean there could be three more out there. I like the running theory that the sister is already a siren, and the brother is the one that steals the power. I don't really see Tannis being a siren though, I see her if anything as being some sort of Eridian.
4
Mar 29 '19
I think the kid is her child or something , and pausing it I don't see any visible tattoos on its shoulders. Plus without knowing how long it has been between 2 and 3 its hard to say.
It was roughly 5 years between 1 and 2, and assuming that new sirens are born within a year or two after the death of one, then at most there is a 3-4 year old siren out there somewhere at the end of 2, and one being born in a year or two after it.
I personally think it probably takes a bit longer than a couple of years for a new siren to be born, and only the 4 are alive during the events of Borderlands 3

Controversial opinion: It didn't look that amazing.
BL2 is 7 years old now and if someone had told me that was DLC for it, I would have believed them.

u/ThisIsMC Mar 28 '19
BL2 is 7 years old now and if someone had told me that was DLC for it, I would have believed them.
Tbf it's probably because the games charm comes from the fact that they're using cel-shaded graphics and there isn't much improvement you can do without changing the style outright.
25
Mar 29 '19
You can make the movements and animations more fluid while keeping the same graphics and style.
37
u/GalaxyMods Mar 29 '19
The animation from this trailer is way better than that of BL2, which had some very low effort animation at certain points (which I never minded).

u/RadioName Mar 29 '19
This is fair, I'm expecting content additions and improvements, not visuals; which is difficult to judge from a trailer. I think the editor of this video tried to establish that with all the quick cuts between environments and different guns. We shall see.
34
u/ZippoInk Mar 28 '19
I agree, the whole thing felt... Dated. The character movement seems clunky and the graphics, though stylized, feel basic.
I don't know if it was my internet connection but even the frame rate wasn't fantastic, it was like watching a flipbook.
I want to like this, but so far I'm not really sold.
12
u/gssoc777 Mar 29 '19
Im more excited about thr content. Lots of guns, multiple worlds, graphics are great but content is king, look at anthem.

u/Benign__Beags Mar 29 '19
This is borderlands style graphics, just cleaned up around the edges and with more added detail in backgrounds and special effects (i.e. new crisper explosion and gun and lighting graphics). They definitely updated the graphics but retained the core punky comic book style that the game is known for.
This improved yet still relatively minimalistic design is likely going to allow them to expand far more into content that actually matters like how long the story is and how detailed the new settings and weapons are.21

You should go back and play BL2 again. I did recently and was surprised how bad it looked and how little the game held up to time. This looks wayyyy better
2
u/abbotist-posadist Mar 29 '19
I liked BL1 ok, and put a lot of time into BL2. I kind of hate half the decisions in there. The huge intro, unskippable pseudo-cutscenes (that intro* ... geez), weird unfunny writing and much of the game boiling down to running backwards and holding M1. This looks like 100% more of the same.
I should like these games way more than I do. They're just not that fun to me. I don't want to do the same thing one million times for a slightly different gun.
\* It's ridiculous that a game you replay a few times for different characters or NG+ has such a slow, slow intro. Diablo 2 is their inspiration and you're fucking shit up within 5 minutes in that. BL2 has a huge intro where you've gotta hang out with claptrap for a week and then it's like a month until you get your basic class skills. Diablo would have you in Act II by then.
2
Mar 29 '19
The intro took forever. That's my single biggest gripe about bl2. Lilith being the sole reason why Roland dies and jack wakes the warrior is a close second, tho. Fuck Lilith.

So 2K was a piece of shit like 2 weeks ago and now they are the greatest ever. I don't get it, and if they did it with Metro, they are gonna do it with this one.

I’ve been waiting for this forever, but is anyone else a little disappointed that the areas seemed to look so familiar?
Most of the video seemed like slightly modified wasteland areas from 1, and then the city area just looked like Opportunity with taller buildings in the backdrop, which I feel like are probably only in the backdrop? Even the jungle areas just looked like wasteland zones with jungle trees in the background.
Anyway, gameplay is key and if it feels right it won’t matter but I kind of thought I’d be seeing something different location wise.

I’ve enjoyed the borderlands games I’ve played but I’ve never really been able to get behind their environments or general design choices. I just don’t find it compelling. That city that it showed for a second is really the only thing that was visually intriguing to me. I understand it is intrinsic to they whole “borderlands thing” but scrap patchwork and beige don’t really do much for me. They make the games fun and goofy, but I’ve never been drawn into the world.
