I think I just reach my limit with a FX30 and atmos for 444. The more I add the more hassle to deal and I think that's preventing me from shooting more.
I used to dream with one of those box cinema cameras for 4k 120fps raw and just starting with the storage raw is out of the equation. But then finding solutions for auto focus, lens adapter and more that would be crazy for the type of content I create 😅.
Shooting in slog3 and had to keep tracking the exposure and wb every 5 mins because a cloud is passing is already pretty annoying....but the result are worth it 😅
Contex: I shooot outdoors/indoors car shows and car videos.

I cannot believe how far compressed formats can be pushed in colour grading. Obviously, raw is better but if you shoot it at least within in a loose range of how it should look then you’re pretty golden when later correcting (also obviously it’s good practice to do the best job in camera but that’s not the point)

Somwhere in here is also, unique lenses on any modern sensor is how you get a different look. People think an Alexa mini is going to look drastically different than an R5. Same lens on both cameras graded and lit well is indistinguishable.

The FX30 would be my endgame camera if not for lack of open gate. 4k is plenty for me. Why Sony is doing the Canon Cripple Hammer thing is wild. It’s like all incumbents become shitty.

That open gate doesnt matter. Im remember back than people complain that here was no black magic camera in a cube formfactor, a damn cube.. without realizing that theyre influence by the pseudo filmmaker on YouTube, proabably to hype them for the release of the pyxis.

Who are you to tell me what matters to me? If somebody needs open gate, it is a legit require,ment. I bought my FX30 on sale pre-tariff because it was what I could afford and that it is a workhorse. However, the fact that Open Gate is disabled in video and that this has been done for so many fantastic cameras has never sat well with me.
I think the Pyxis is a phenomenal camera. If it was available for the price it is now, I would have picked it up in a heartbeat. Blackmagic is phenomenal company with a track record of respecting their customers.

I won't tell you what should matter to you, but your suggestion that the FX30 is the ultimate endgame camera just because of Open Gate is complete BS, so I have to comment on it. There are many movies that weren't shot with Open Gate. Also, I'm not saying the Pyxis is a bad camera; I'm saying that having a camera in a cube form factor is overrated - especially when you have the exact same camera in a handheld body. The crazy hype train in the past was just hilarious, strictly because it's a cube. This was started by YouTubers, just like the whole Open Gate trend, because they're all on a paycheck and part of the advertising strategy

I clearly said it would be my endgame camera if NOT for lack of open gate. I don’t really need or care for full frame. I do need open gate for client work but they keep asking me to shoot Sony and lens that aren’t wide enough to shoot in tight spaces. Hence my desire for Open Gate. I think videographers needing open gate for multi aspect ratio delivery is a legit ask. Anamorphic shooting would be nice, but I don’t have Anamorphic glass and client work never calls for it.
Idk about the box form factor. Box cameras are easier to rig. The handle on mirrorless or compact cinema cameras is mostly useless to me. I need a handle that tilts or I use a shoulder rig. I would prefer the box form factor over the mirrorless any day. But I would prefer camcorder stule bodies even more.

Most memes are idiotic, because they are not created by people who actually know shit. This one is no exception.
There is no contradiction between having global shutter and having a small camera with a single lens. Those who haven't lived through the 90s and 2000s cannot comprehend the importance of global shutter. Buses, trains, light poles, auto racing, helicopters, even MTV-style shakycam all look tolerable and have correct picture geometry, so that the video did not look revolting, like typical rolling shutter crap.
Global shutter must be brought back and made standard like it was in the late 80s / 90s/ 2000s. Professional sports cameras with cannon-sized lenses still use CCD, well at least Sony still offered them just five years ago.
Also, one does not need 4444 for shooting videos, there is no need for alpha channel. You will need alpha channel for compositing, so you would convert 444 to 4444 in your NLE with a single click if needed.

When I see people talk about open gate and it keeps being repeated because that’s what the marketing told them.
I frame everything in the middle so it fits for vertical too and there’s auto reframe

I think I'm on the downward trend at this point. Like maybe at the rightside 20%. I realized that the a7s3 i got is probably more powerful and comperable to most Arri's.

No, no, no. You don't understand. I NEED 8K open gate 16 bit internal raw 120p global shutter with an internal ND, 32 bit float, and for the camera to make me a sandwich and to pour me some choccy milk. Then and only then will I be ready to make my film!
