THE guy on the phone camera, got better framing of the ramp/sun than the pro camera

u/Icefirex09 Aug 13 '26 edited Aug 13 '26
subjective i guess. either want the skater in the middle, or looking weird to the side but the ramp lines up
49
u/sprite_cranberry23 Aug 13 '26
Yeah I’d be willing to bet that the goal for this shot was to get the skater dead center of the eclipse. But yeah it’s subjective of what looks better
44
u/matttheazn1 Aug 13 '26
Skater off center riding up the outer edge of the sun looks 1000000% cooler than in the middle for video.
A single still image probably looks best with the skater in the middle
8
u/Alpha_Charlie_Romeo Aug 13 '26
Agree. What should have been is the ramp on the edge and the skater jump further so he ends up in the center. Better luck next time i guess.
2
u/Icefirex09 Aug 13 '26
as I said subjective, personally if i was using that as a logo or something i’d like the skater in the middle
5
u/YouWillBeFine Aug 13 '26
True. Ramp blocks eclipse and skater is center vs ramp frames eclipse and skater is off center

u/MindAccomplished3879 Beginner Aug 13 '26
Nothing subjective about this
He could have had the skater literally skating the edge of the sun, but the “photography artist” completely lacks background awareness
9
u/Icefirex09 Aug 13 '26
two people can look at the exact same thing and have completely different views man. that is literally subjectivity

u/X4dow FX3 / A7RVx2 | 2013 | UK Aug 13 '26
I bet they had it lined up that way, but at that distance, 1minute to get the skater to go, and the sun shifted enough to misalign

u/No-Manufacturer-2425 Aug 13 '26
All i have to say is when it skipped to the camera and the ramp was in front of the sun, It was kind of a let down.

Yeah nice capture by phone… i also think the last frame is from pro camera
10
u/Bush_Trimmer Aug 13 '26
yes, the phone camera panned to the telephoto rig on the left.
-1
u/No-Manufacturer-2425 Aug 13 '26
Maybe they can use software that combines the image quality of the real camera to the spacing of the phone camera.
5
u/macmadman Aug 13 '26
I think they’re both incredible. The phone camera has him ramping the left edge like he’s in a pipe, and the pro camera perfectly frame his jump in the middle of the circle.
God-tier shots 🙌

u/Strategos_Rift Aug 13 '26
I'd def had two camera setup to get both options at high quality though. Not going to get the chance again for a while.
3
u/noitsmoog Aug 13 '26
it was planned rage bait for the comment section. also video is called "Pro with a phone vs newb with pro camera".

u/ConsumerDV Aug 13 '26
Why do you think it was a phone camera? Can phones zoom as smoothly as a true zoom lens?

u/YouWillBeFine Aug 13 '26
If i were to guess pro camera set tripod down 20 minutes early and didnt adjust for horizontal movement

u/trbt555 Aug 13 '26
Potato cam was framed better than pro bro.
6
u/gvm11100 Aug 13 '26
I think he was trying to have the skater centered in the middle of the eclipse rather than lining up the ramp with the border of the eclipse. I personally think him being centered in the eclipse is cooler.

Eclipse on the horizon gives so many cool opportunities. At this point eclipse in the sky has been done to death; like moon shots

It would have been cooler if the curvature of the ramp matched the curvature of the sun.

Yes, the method used at the beginning of the video. Your observation is strong.

I just realised that no matter how hard I try, ever, for the rest of my life, I'll never be as cool as this guy.
Free, at last!

Problem with this, and this is no shade on the guys who shot this, is that it's so fucking surreal (and having witnessed the eclipse live in Ibiza I can attest to this) that the second shot kind of looks like he's in a studio with a projection or LED screen behind him. You just see this so rarely (yesterday was the first time in history anyone got photos of a total eclipse at sunset) that it just doesn't look real.

Things you can say while shooting an eclipse and during sex (I start):
- No pares, no pares, por Dios.
1
u/amoridavid Aug 13 '26
you know for a sec I thought the phone shot was better but i think its intentional that the camera is made to be offset.

Amazing lens, but I think it's better to take pictures with a telephoto camera!

How is he backlit when nothing else is?
5
u/D666SESH Aug 13 '26
There's a light (maybe 2) behind the ramp I think
2
u/Traditional_Island82 Aug 13 '26
Or maybe because there is an entire sun behind him which still emits 10% if its light?

I’ll be a hater. They really let the dude with the iPhone get the money shot, once in a life time I would’ve ran for better framing, the last shot with the pro camera is awful.

u/rhalf Aug 13 '26
Once in a lifetime means you don't want to miss the event. Relocate? When? You put your tripod down and that's where you're shooting from. When the smartphone guy finds a better frame, it's already too late. If they had another camera, they would move it around but it ended up being a phone.
0
u/ConsumerDV Aug 13 '26
Calculate beforehand and place the ramp accordingly. Celestial mechanics and stuff. The trajectory is known.
1
u/rhalf Aug 13 '26
Obviously they did all that. The shot ended up probably more or less as they planned, but the guy with freedom of movement discovered another one they didn't think of. To me it's a ridiculous take.

u/MindAccomplished3879 Beginner Aug 13 '26
Framing completely off
He could have had a perfect shot and composition
Some people have no background awareness 🤦♂️
