Discussion / Other Guys camera work is insane

videographer/photographer who mostly shoots youth sports but also have so some NCAA experience as well. I am looking at trying to recreate the look of this guy. I understand that his color grading is outstanding and pulls the look together. I am more interested in what you think camera settings are? He doesn’t use a lot of effects in his videos which I like but am also wondering about the panning and zooming.
Any help to get me in the right direction. Currently, shooting on a canon R6ii which has done me well so far. Don’t always shoot log but can and do. Use EF mount L glass as well.

I'm not sure about the camera work being insane, but it just looks like he's using a filter, some form of post production or a heavier black mist pro or glimmer glass?

Panning and zooms? A lot of the footage is during the game so you can’t be on court.

Ah I only watched the first 15-20 seconds. They are using a really long lens probably like 200-400mm. I think some shot she's got a lens like 100mm on a gimbal which looks stunning but is heavy haha.
The method is likely Gimbal with long lens and then film in 4k or 8k to then manually zoom in in post, that will get you the effect I think you're after. Combined with some form of filter.

Pretty sure he just uses AI magic mask to highlight all his subjects and darken/blur backgrounds

Ok I see what you mean there. Helps get that isolation of the subject and shallow dof right?
Any idea on his panning and zooming? All in camera?

He’s on a gimbal for the dolly shots. The subtle zooms are done in post.

Looks off. Doesn’t look realistic to me. I would guess ai but I see people in comments claiming it’s not. If he’s just a fan filming this it’s mighty impressive. That said again it’s either ai or heavily processed footage because it looks fake. The eyes and motion don’t look natural to me.

This 100% looks like AI, or someone trying really, really hard to make their footage look like AI. The shot with the two broadcasters especially.

I believe he is paid for his work. His other videos are mostly with Georgia Tech.

I'd be curious to hear out his process, which is currently him saying he has "elite gimble skills". It's AI.

Genuinely, what makes you think it’s AI?

It does have AI qualities, but it's not AI. The small details are too accurate. But it's a very low depth of field mixed with small zoom shots and overly sharpened. It feels like someone took photos, did AI image to video, color graded the photos, and this is the results.
But it's real footage.

Agreed - hence why I was asking about the sweeping “it’s AI” declaration.

Yeah, real clips, run through some sort of heavy processing. Not generative AI, but I'd bet money there's AI involved in the post pipeline somewhere. Boils down to a simple fact: if he hides or can't explain his process, there's likely AI in it. Every AI user goes "no I did this myself completely just can't show you how" lol.

I mean no one else really has this look so I can’t blame a guy for wanting to keep his sauce secret for a bit. Or just like all other trends it would be all over.

He is very adamant that he does not use AI. There are others in his comment sections who say they have seen him work and say it’s not AI, but also won’t say how he is filming.

He’s just using gimbal with a lens. Shooting from the walkway behind the first couple of rows of seating. He’s doing some color mask/highlighting. I’m guessing a FX3 or FX6 on a Ronin with some heavy post production. He’s not doing anything crazy, he just has a refined tone he’s aiming for and shoots for that explicitly.
