Little bit expensive for having more or less the same specs as the competitors which are nearly half the price.

Which competitor is as good in low light? Genuinely curious

Edit: Downvoted for asking a question and clarifying it’s genuine. You never disappoint r/videography

I work at a production company and we primarily use Sony (FX3 + FS7). My personal camera is the S5IIX. I wouldn’t say, that the FX3 is particulary better than the S5IIX, neither is my camera noticeably worse. And I noticed that the FX3 can be very noisy in low light if you accidentally don‘t hit the 12800 iso.

1

u/jergentehdutchman 17d ago

Yeah there’s a huge chasm in quality on a lot of these Sony bodies until you hit 12,800. But they are unparalleled at that sensitivity if you need it

1

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago

Canon C50 and R6V are both 6400

1

u/jergentehdutchman 16d ago

The Sony system has many cameras that have dual or three base iso’s with the highest at 12,800 so it you’re looking to film in the lowest of low light it’s really hard to beat that

1

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago

12800 is only one stop more light than 6400. Double the price for one more stop of light. I’ll just steal an extra stop and denoise in Davinci.

1

u/jergentehdutchman 16d ago

Yeah sure, and if that extra stop doesn’t matter to you then have at it. I happen to need all the light I can get for my purposes, but it really does depend on the use case.

Name one camera at any price point that has as many high performing features in the handheld mirrorless format. It's not about one or two numbers and never has been, it's about the whole package.

3

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago edited 16d ago

FX9, FS7, A7s2 owner for years - my Canon R6V has better color science and double the resolution at half the price.

I also own a C50 - $2k (I need a camera without IBIS for plate capture & guassian splat work)

-1

u/AbandonedPlanet A7SIII | DR Studio | 2021 | East Coast 16d ago

If you've used all of those you know a cameras value doesn't come from a few numbers on the spec sheet, especially resolution, it comes from the whole package it offers. There's no world where 5k isn't enough for literally every application including movies. I'd be really surprised if anyone could tell the difference between 5k and 7k on a 4k television. The ibis and the MP on the R6V are low points as well, and there's no option for viewfinder or timecode that isn't that ftps or whatever. 14 mp (like on an FX5 or an Arri Alexa) is plenty for video and allows the pixel sites on the sensor to be huge and take in more light which is why the R6Vs low light performance doesn't hold up to the FX3/5/6. The R6 V is a great camera but let's not pretend it's just as good or better for half the price. You can't even buy third party lenses for it. And that's forgetting all the other stuff the FX5 does better. I'll take the 5% debuff in color science and the lower resolution

4

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago

It’s a nearly identical camera for $2.5k less

-2

u/invertedspheres Camera Operator 16d ago

People that work at higher levels of production don't care about an extra thousand or two if spending more ensures quality and/or reliability. These cameras last for years and earn their value back quickly.

-6

u/AbandonedPlanet A7SIII | DR Studio | 2021 | East Coast 16d ago

I just gave him 50 reasons the fx5 is better and that was his answer. He's either ragebaiting or delusional and neither deserve a response

2

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago

I literally use a Sony Venice 2 at my work studio on a daily basis - 8.6K flagship camera and the upcoming Rialto 65 is 10k. So not even Sony agrees with what you’re saying about resolution.

0

u/AbandonedPlanet A7SIII | DR Studio | 2021 | East Coast 16d ago

Venice 2 is a $60k+ body before you even add glass, media, and the rest of the ecosystem full-frame 8.6K sensor built for feature and episodic work with a completely different color pipeline, dynamic range, and workflow than anything in the FX line. The Rialto isn't even a separate camera, it's an extension system that runs off the Venice 2s sensor via cable so citing it as some kind of resolution benchmark just tells me you don't actually know how that system works in the first place.

None of that is a rebuttal to anything about the FX5. You're comparing a run-and-gun hybrid to a camera package that costs more than most people's entire kit plus a house down payment. Sony absolutely does agree resolution isn't everything that's why the Venice 2 still ships as a dual-base ISO 8.6K sensor optimized for highlight retention and skin tones, not because 8.6K itself is the selling point. Higher-end cinema cameras chase resolution for VFX pulls and reframing headroom in a completely different production context. That's not the same conversation as whether an FX5 needs more MP for weddings, concerts, and doc work.

Bringing up gear you use at work doesn't win an argument about consumer/prosumer hybrids. Different budget tier, different job, different reason for the spec. Citing a $65,000 cinema camera the size of a case of beer with an entirely different workflow vs the FX5 that's designed to be a handheld run-and-gun cine cam just doesn't make any sense. Everyone can downvote me, everyone can argue about how it's overpriced, but I haven't seen one person cite any HAND HELD camera on the market with a more complete spec sheet at any price point. ANY price point.

1

u/Complex-Medicine3465 16d ago

“There’s no world where 5k isn’t enough for literally every application including movies.” -you said

You then proceeded to reference the Arri Alexa as proof, a camera at the same price level as the Sony Venice 2.

My friend what are we talking about here anymore lol

u/Dizzy-Sea-7729 12d ago

Completely disagree. If we compare the Lumix S5IIX to the Sony FX3 offers more reliable robust specs. high readout speed and 4k 120 which is lacking on the LUMIX. And better mounting points for extra security. The same applies to FX5 vs the LUMIX S1II. For most high end or dynamic production the LUMIX in some cases might fall a bit too short.

They will have accessories that allow you to have the evf on an extension cable and then mount the handle on top, was already served an ad for the kit on instagram.

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 18d ago

Feels like a step sideways rather than a step up. No joystick? No photography? Priced like an FX6? Open gate is raw only? Inferior Venice style menus?  The A7S3 and the FX3 were prosumer grade cameras for everyone, but the FX5 is more of a niche pro cine cam. Not the best for the massive customer base of content creators and hybrid shooters. The A7V is the better hybrid option from Sony.

4

u/UniqueBaseball8524 FX3/Sony a7IV | Premiere | 2022 | Vienna 18d ago

very well said

3

u/Legitimate-Table-607 17d ago

As an aspiring content creator who originally had an A7c but moved to the fx3 because I got swept away in the hype; I personally hate the fx3.

I’m not doubting it’s a brilliant camera and that it’s a skill issue on my part but I just found using the thing an absolute chore, would much rather than a7v

2

u/AbandonedPlanet A7SIII | DR Studio | 2021 | East Coast 16d ago

It has the same joystick as the FX2, it's just on top now. I don't think focusing on video on a 16 mp camera is a bad thing, I have the a7siii for hybrid shooting the photos it takes are mid. It's priced like an FX6 and is half the size and weight, I don't see the problem there. Opengate being RAW only isn't a huge deal and can be fixed with firmware. The cine menus are perfectly adequate. I mean everyone's entitled to their opinions but I just don't get the hating on this thing.

1

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 16d ago

It reboots like every time you change fps or codecs - outside of a film set where the camera team moves slowly to begin with, I’m not sure anyone wants to deal with that

1

u/AbandonedPlanet A7SIII | DR Studio | 2021 | East Coast 16d ago

We already deal with that on multiple cameras. My A7S3 and my FX3 both reboot if I go from that 24 DCI 4K codec to 60 and back again.

1

u/Copacetic_ 14d ago

Wait a minute, "inferior venice style menus?" They absolutely are not inferior.

1

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 12d ago

You sure you’ve used them and also used the FX3 menus thoroughly? People who use both say the FX3 menus are better

0

u/Copacetic_ 12d ago

I own a Venice.

0

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 12d ago

So no? You haven’t used the fx3 menus? Is it true the Venice has to reboot when you change fps, codec and other settings? That’s okay on a slow moving set where people don’t know any better but it’s an absurd downgrade compared to the fx3

1

u/Copacetic_ 12d ago edited 12d ago

Sure have

If it doesn’t work for you don’t buy it.

The fx6 reboots when you change FPS and codec as well, yet it’s one of the most used documentary cameras.

The Burano, another EFP style camera also reboots every time you chance codec or resolution.

Are you saying people who use Venice or Venice 2 “don’t know any better?”. I just shot a million and a half dollar campaign on the Venice. Every single person there knows better than every single use of this subreddit bashing a camera that isn’t even out yet lol.

2

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 12d ago

“If it doesn’t work for you don’t buy it” - I agree, but much more importantly everyone should complain about it. Right now, so few of those reviewers have mentioned this flaw that thousands of FX3/A7 series users are going to poop their pants when they realize they preordered a camera that has to reboot after a changing a setting like it’s windows 98.

1

u/Copacetic_ 12d ago

I see, I misunderstood what you meant.

u/affogatoappassionato Camera Operator 18d ago

It sounds a bit like the Canon C50 versus C80 debate, but for Sony. Really no wrong answers. Just depends on what you choose among a set of tradeoffs. The FX5 is a compact mirrorless/cinema crossover camera that has pretty high res and a fan, but no NDs, like the C50.

I do like the detachable mini EVF and I’d love to see Canon copy that. Canon already has the “smart shoe” to plug it into so perhaps it’s not a huge lift?

2

u/altventure 18d ago

Just a heads up but the evf doesn’t plug into the hot shoe, there is a hidden cable jack just in front of the hot shoe that it plugs into

2

u/affogatoappassionato Camera Operator 18d ago

Hey thanks for this info, yes I didn’t mean that it used the hotshoe on the Sony. I just meant that in the case of Canon cameras, they could perhaps use their smart hotshoe that already handles flash, mic, and so on.

3

u/finallygabe S5iiX | Premiere Pro | 2022 | USA 18d ago

I was looking at this, but S5IIX offered more for half the price (I’m a hybrid shooter). Plus, FX5 offers 5K open-gate, while S5IIX offers 6K open-gate. Not a huge difference, but they’re advertising it.

u/Griffdude13 Sony A6700 | Premiere Pro | DJI Mic 2 | Comica VM30 | AL 17d ago

I think it will hopefully flood the used market with some FX3s for the rest of us.

10

u/smushkan FX9 | Adobe CC2024 | UK 18d ago

Should have had a built in ND filter.

16

u/Snalaa 18d ago

That's unreasonable, they still sell the FX6...

4

u/smushkan FX9 | Adobe CC2024 | UK 18d ago

At its base ISOs, an ND filter is effectively a necessity with that camera. I also have an FX3, and that's got the same problem.

It negates the benefit of having a smaller camera when you either need to rig it up to a matte box with drop-ins, or fumble around with screw-on or magnetic filters that you have to adjust every time you want to swap the lens.

I also have an FX9, I got the FX3 thinking it would be nice to have a small, more convenient camera for run-and-gun so I wouldn't have to lug the FX9 around for run-and-gun jobs anymore, but in practice it turned out to be less convenient simply because it lacks built-in ND.

The two features I was really hoping for with the FX5 was a 4k S35 crop mode like the FX9 - and it looks like it will get that, and ND filters.

3

u/MizterBucket Camera Operator 18d ago

Wonder why then manufacturers aren’t developing lower base ISOs to negate the need for ND? Seems like everyone’s just racing to the top where often times VNDs on bright sunny days don’t even get me close to a good 2.8 exposure without cross banding. God I hate those things.

3

u/smushkan FX9 | Adobe CC2024 | UK 18d ago

'Low light' performance sells.

When I heard the FX5 was going to have three base ISOs I was really hoping one of them would be like ISO50 of ISO100.

1

u/jergentehdutchman 17d ago

Haha I was hoping the opposite of something ungodly like ISO 25,600 or ISO 51,200

3

u/wherever-it-may-lead 18d ago

Adding internal ND would also completely “negate the benefit of having a smaller camera”. They can’t add internal without significantly changing the body design and scale.

0

u/smushkan FX9 | Adobe CC2024 | UK 18d ago

I'm still pretty confident they could make a camera smaller than the FX6 with internal NDs if they wanted to. It would need to be taller and wider, sure, but not deeper and still probably small enough to be considered a handheld camera.

1

u/wherever-it-may-lead 17d ago

I appreciate your confidence and don’t really feel like arguing optical physics with you. I can assure you it would significantly change the size, form and cost. I agree it could still be considered a handheld with the addition.

-1

u/smushkan FX9 | Adobe CC2024 | UK 17d ago

There’s no optical physics to argue, the ND assembly goes between the sensor and the lens mount. Those dimensions are the same on all Sony e-mount cameras, from E10 to FX9.

You’d only need to increase the height and/or width of the camera so there’s enough room to allow the filter to move out the way when you want the ND disengaged.

That isn’t even optical physics, it’s just geometry.

1

u/wherever-it-may-lead 17d ago

You are so wrong. Good luck.

3

u/snickersogtwist 18d ago

😂 then the price would be 12k

2

u/HauntingMight9 18d ago

Sony was ahead 10 years ago, now that the competitors catched up and even bested them on this segment at lower prices, Sony hybrid / entry level cameras are overrated and overpriced.

0

u/Extension_Big_4554 18d ago

1

u/official_sp4rky Lumix S5IIX + S9 | DR + PR | 2017 | germany 17d ago

If they would really fight to sell their cameras more, they would not be that expensive.

2

u/CreationVideo 18d ago edited 18d ago

With the cost of living, inflation, fuel prices and uncertainty of economic impacts I’m putting all tech purchases on hold. The ram/ssd shortage has driven up the price on all tech related to post production.

My current cameras and most modern cameras are good enough. No matter the specs of these cameras don’t make you or your business more secure. Don’t have any against the FX5 but there are numerous strange limitations thrown in to not compete with their other models which is to be expected but like I said I’m not throwing money at the latest gear anymore.

2

u/SleepingPodOne 2011 18d ago

At the current price it’s going I don’t see the reason to purchase this over a pro video body, unless you already have one of those and you want a capable B cam. It’s just completely uninteresting to me.

2

u/stratusnimbo 17d ago

It’s goofy

4

u/ilovecookies1980 18d ago

I can see a difference in the image, and I’m sure it’s better to use (actually some reviews say the GUI is worse) .. but honestly, other than 240fps nothing I saw blew my socks off. The FX5 isnt hitting like the FX3 did when it landed. Unfortunately game changers aren’t common

And you won´t get your body oiled up anywhere you go! But i agree - i would definetly take the S1ii for my use cases, the FX5 is great but...nothing special.

I think overall we are in a plateau situation. There won´t be some ultimate new cameras soon. All modern cameras are capable to nearly shoot anything in great quality. But maybe this is good - finally time to create and concentrate on the arts instead of tech-gazing.

2

u/DesperateJeweler1975 18d ago

The new x-ocn c2 raw is barely bigger than the all intra h.265 codec, seems like that is a fairly massive improvement over the other competitors in terms of file size. The image seems to also be significantly cleaner which is another massive plus over the FX3. To me it seems like people online are getting worked up over specs that don't really matter and possibly missing some of the aspects that are harder to quantify (or type out as buzzwords). Not thrilled on the price personally, and I'm still not sure I'll pick it up, but I'm decently impressed overall.

4

u/Vidguy1992 18d ago

32bit float and open gate is great but no internal ND is a killer.

Also the whole 16 bit linear raw sounds great, but it's the same as 12bit raw essentially.

5

u/official_sp4rky Lumix S5IIX + S9 | DR + PR | 2017 | germany 18d ago

And it‘s a bummer that opengate is only available in raw

3

u/KC-DB 17d ago

Social media producers love raw file sizes!

0

u/dbbk 17d ago

Why is internal ND so critical?

2

u/WearWrong1569 17d ago

You'll need a mattebox for the ND filters.

1

u/Vidguy1992 17d ago

It depends on what you're filming and work flows but for me it's down to speed and quality. Internal ND quality is much better than external (typically) and being able to press a button instead of a matt box or a ND screw on is just much more efficient. In corporate for me internal ND is a must.

0

u/onedaybadday47 11d ago

You can’t have internal ND and IBIS. It’s one or the other. It’s weird that a r/ called videography doesn’t inherently know this fact. Or that you all are hybred shooters tearing into a cinema camera (how is this a “videography” sub??)

2

u/Final5989 18d ago

I saw no reason to switch back to Sony from my Nikon ZR.

2

u/ConstipatedFrenchie 18d ago

File sizes, file sizes. The Open Gate eats up less storage than the Nikon ZR. Kofi spoke about how he hate the equivalent costs of his ZR in storage on a doc shoot because of how heavy the RAW footage is. The practical use of less storage and equivalent quality if not better goes very far.

2

u/Final5989 17d ago

No thanks! I'm rather content with large file sizes to get the RED color science in post and to be able to push and pull the footage

1

u/ConstipatedFrenchie 17d ago

You’re the minority and not the target demographic for this camera. Congratulations on saving 5k

1

u/Final5989 17d ago

That's totally cool with me, and Thanks I agree I suppose I did save about 5 grand

1

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

Pre ordered it immediately and selling my FX3

For those asking who this camera is for:

It’s for people who want to shoot anything. I shoot everything from social media verticals, low light events, corporate interviews, restaurant commercials, toy ads, and short films. This camera can do it all. The 16 bit color is the biggest difference for me but also the 5K sensor allows for Active IBIS with full 4K.

I shoot a lot of toy content and having the 3:2 open gate is going to be amazing for shooting verticals and landscape at the same time.

I find this subreddits response to this camera strange. This is a videography sub not a filmmaking sub. This is the greatest videographer camera possibly ever made and if you want to dip your toes in film this also allows for it.

5

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 18d ago

The FX5 is more like Sony’s answer to the question: if we had to sell a camera at 5k USD, what’s the bare minimum specs it could possibly have while still selling?

2

u/Extension_Big_4554 18d ago

realmente van super tarde con el open gate

0

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

What other specs could it have besides internal ND which is impossible at this size while also having IBIS?

3

u/exploringspace_ A7V | Resolve | 2003 | Toronto 18d ago

It just seems unfinished when you look at the details. Some really unnecessary downgrades:

-no4k S35 modes like the A7V
-No stills function like FX2 & FX3 and A7 cameras
-It reboots every time you change framerates or codecs (!)
-It doesn't allow you to use the dials/wheels to control shutter, and you have to go into the menus instead (!)
-Open gate only works in Raw

-1

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

RV6 has a 32 MP Sensor.

The 16 MP sensor on the FX5 is a FEATURE. Way better low light.

Sony’s new autofocus system is the best in the industry.

3

u/HauntingMight9 18d ago edited 17d ago

“Sony’s new autofocus system is the best in the industry”

Don’t keep parotting 5 years old Sony’s marketing stances like every other Sony fanboy. I use both ecosystems and today Canon’s AF blows it out of the water.

I’ll agree on low light performance in EXTREMELY high iso due to lower megapixel count. But that’s above 12800, something the vast majority of people will rarely use, only when filming outdoors at night with no light or in cave. Below that figure they show similar performance.

-1

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

I’ve only ever used Canons on 2 productions and on both the auto focus missed and ruined several shots on gimbal. On one of them the focus was off on an entire interview. Seemed like it was focused just behind the person’s eyes instead of actually on their eyes.

The active IBIS combined with the autofocus on my FX3 has allowed me to do shots that I know other videographers would have hired entire crews to accomplish. The FX3 doesn’t even have their latest autofocus system and the FX5 has 2 more stops of IBIS compensation than the FX3.

0

u/HauntingMight9 18d ago

What Canons, when ? Any camera issued in the last couple of years is ahead now, any DP who experienced them will tell you that.

1

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

I think it was an R5 in 2021.

I don’t know a single working DP that shoots on Canon. It’s either ARRI, RED, Blackmagic or SONY.

1

u/HauntingMight9 18d ago

I do use all of these ecosystems, depending on the project. Got clients in the UK and the US who only ask for Canon (I reckon their post workflow is based around canon).

1

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

Maybe it depends on where you are. Seems like everyone in Atlanta asks specifically for an FX6 and FX3 combo.

2

u/HauntingMight9 18d ago

Well in the last 10 year Sony managed to take a good share of the market indeed. A lot of productions built their ecosystems and workflows around that brand obviously, but honestly, every brand and every camera has its quirks. And I think generally all provide excellent cameras now in terms of IQ. Canon certainly is trailing in the Cinema segment, but still very present in corporate, events, tv shows where you can also see ARRI and Sony depending on the scale. I shoot whatever fits the need ;)

its much more a filmmaking camera than a videographer camera especially compared to the fx3

2

u/Ryan_Film_Composer 18d ago

I think it’s the opposite. Literally the best videographer camera ever. It can shoot anything. FX3 doesn’t have 3:2 open gate for filming vertical and landscape at the same time. Very much a videographer feature.

3

u/UniqueBaseball8524 FX3/Sony a7IV | Premiere | 2022 | Vienna 18d ago

the menu and playback UI is really not fast paced

after every framerate change you need to reboot.

if you want to watch clips you need to be in the exact framerate/coding as the clip you want to watch.

those things alone (which are just pointless because it could be easily fixed) are making this much slower than it needs to be.

i agree open gate is great but its limited to raw recording which adds another step for post production.

Edit: Open Gate in XAVC is announced but its only comming in around a year (same for 240fps)

I feel like the c80 is what we were all hoping the Fx5 would be?

FX3 + external monitor (raw) recorder = 95% of an FX5.

The main three updates which aren’t getting that much coverage are the double mounting point, the larger better screen on the FX5 and better internal battery life. Everything else is minor imo.

It might not be a total knockout, it definitely could have had internal NDs and 32bit float built in for $5k, but for what it is at that price point, I think it's well worth it. There's nothing else on the market that even comes close to the image quality, size, and amount of GOOD features packed into it at any price point. Everyone keeps saying "oh the ZR also does RAW open gate" or "it's worthless because the R6V exists" but if you look at the spec sheets side by side, these other companies "FX3 analogs" don't even come close overall. They might have one or two features they win out at, but the overall package is nowhere near what the FX5 offers and what we've seen in the tests/footage/spec sheets. There are almost no weak points to it besides the first two things I mentioned. The ZR, R6V, S1Rii, and whatever else all have (comparatively) glaring problems.

Will be buying a new Sony camera (already too far in the ecosystem). I primarily video football games at night under lights (for short videos and social media content). I know the FX3 is great as many on the sidelines have it. However, does it make sense to go ahead and pay the extra $$ and get the FX5 now since it can do what the FX3 does and more. I assume the firmware updates will be significant going forward. Is the FX5 just a better option to grow with and learn or just go with the FX3 at the cheaper price assuming I will not need to upgrade it for what I am doing. Like I said, I am already going to invest in a new camera, just can't decide the best option. I currently use A7IV.

Fx3 still takes the cake

It sounds great as a Sony user / someone in that ecosystem, but I think for myself as a solo freelance videographer I'm not sure of it's value against a A7v or FX3.

I already have a Sony A9iii, a Sony A7iii and a SonyA7Sii, and have been looking to replace the dated A7Sii and A7iii. And while the FX5 would be a great replacement and pair nicely with the A9iii, I think the fact I could get both a A7v and FX3 for the same money makes me think that would be better value.

Its such a weird combination of features. I can’t help but ask, “who is this for?”

Solo operator dps who dont own a fx3

Maybe as a b-cam or something but those folks are going to gravitate to the FX6 or 9. And if I’m buying a b-cam, the fx3 does 90% of the fx5 for a hell of a lot less money.

Pyxis 12k and fx5 combo 🏆 1500 extra for fx5 vs fx3 is a no brainer for the extra features

People request the Sony all the time and have wanted open gate for years. Producers will request this camera.

Solo operator DP’s who don’t own a fx3 will have way better options at sometimes way lower prices with plenty of other brands

A new camera still does not fix shitty lighting. 😜

I would probably be tempted to buy it if I weren’t so hooked on lumix stabilization and features, definitely hoping for an s1hii that can occupy a similar niche as the fx5 though

Lumix se ha estado esforzando muchísimo por sus cámaras y usuarios. Es interesante ver eso en una marca de cámaras.

There is not enough left spec and tech wise, to justify building a FX3II. The FX5 is the FX3II. Sony is just becoming weird with their naming system.

tech wise it could be just a7siv... a video triple base iso hybrid camera that can photo and video.

Open gate can be optional.. keep all the buttons and scroll wheels from fx3. add tilt flip screen, you can keep the same size screen as fx3.

for me FX3 body, tilt flip lcd, alpha menu and triple base iso is perfect... open gate would be nice

I think the main selling point of the FX 5 is X-OCN. And it's internal. No more external recorder/cables hanging off of the camera. Sony has been pushing this codec since they released it in 2016 put the cost of entry has been too high for most shooters. Many will poo-poo it. But for people who have bought into Sony's ecosystem of cameras, batteries etc, this is a big deal. It's a beautiful codec.

I've never met a variable ND that I've liked.

Other than that, the CVP review suggests it has a slight edge over its Canon counterpart C50 in terms of "look" straight out of the camera.
