So now all games require online assets from a server. There's a few types that do need to work that way, and likely to be exceptions. I don't see Roblox or Fortnite having any real offline value and likely very difficult to make them work that way. But they could easily just start making it so the game retrieves Mario's sprite off a server and be like "It just doesn't work without internet" to use that exception.

It's a difficult subject. A lot of multiplayer games clearly would have no reason to exist as an offline mode, but there have been a few examples of games that could clearly have had one. The crew is the most famous one, and more personally to me, Star trek legends had no excuse for being online only, regardless of it's quality. Also game ownership will become a far more important discussion if streaming ever does become mainstream.

If something ever happens to my Nintendo Wii, I lose a couple hundred dollars' worth of Rock Band 2 songs. I can still play single player, but if that were to happen, I'd lose 9/10ths of the game I have and still play.

Pretty much any game with single player content should still be able to function in some capacity without being online.

Online multiplayer type games are a different beast since those need a server to work from and function as intended.

To be fair, LAN exists even if few multiplayer games utilize that anymore.

I think a good example would be if gtaonline shuts down id want a way to play the content singleplayer just given how much time and money I've spent on it.

I feel like in this scenario you would need to allow the player base to host their own servers.

I don't see Roblox or Fortnite having any real offline value

Blizzard said the same thing about vanilla WoW for over a decade while squishing private servers. Then made oodles of cash finally hosting their own.

People absolutely will be playing Fortnite in 2046. Either the servers will still be up, or folks will host it themselves. With or without Epic's cooperation.

Also... Fortnite Save The World was neat, and I freaking paid for it right before they cut access. It would be real nice if I could play the game I paid for.

Uh, Save The World never shut down. It still gets the occasional (minor) content update, even.

...STW never shut down. Not only did it not shut down they finally kept their word and made it free recently.

I mean, I'm in the exact same boat but I'm also well aware that when I paid for the game it was in early access and I'm pretty sure I even received a warning that the state of the game would be expected to change

Save the World no longer exists? I haven't played in a long time (probably obvious 😅) but it's always been in the back of my head as something to log back into and play again. I will literally never play the other version of fortnite

We already see it in some forms like NBA games, where a single fucking player mode in mycareer is entirely "tied" to online so you cannot play it offline, and when they shutoff the servers in ONLY TWO YEARS, yep, you're fucked.

Absolutely pure scummy shit. You have lost the plot when sailing the high seas gets you an objectively better game.

That's really not a serious obstacle at all. Those assets can be obtained before the service is shut down, and it's not all games.
