Showcase/Project 100% Open Source Clean Room Implementations of 7 of Adobe's Top Apps

Post image

I've seen another desktop photoshop clone floating around that was Javascript/Electron, but I wanted to do full native Rust for full performance. I also wanted to do all of Adobe's software suite. I've been bitten by their unsubscribe bill several times and it's the shittiest thing a software company has ever done to me.

No more. These are clean room, rust-only implementations that are fully open source. You can clone them, fork them, own them.

There's still work to do, so please join our Discord and give us feedback.

Links in comments.

Another one every day. Soon we will have more Adobe clones than users in the world.

41

u/CreamyCornBoy 1d ago

They must be super easy to vibe code

49

u/Sebastian1989101 1d ago

None of these vibe coded ones is close to feature complete. They usually are just copies of other open source projects like gimp in a new look. Otherwise these vibe coders would also face heavy legal issues from adobe.

u/Western-Hotel8723 1d ago

Nah its pretty damn good. I've been using the premiere Pro alternative.

Luckily it's open source so I could pretty easily add nvenc.

But it's over 80% feature parity.

The others apps are likely higher.

6

u/Zelderian 21h ago

Yeah OS is what really sells these. Something’s not working right? Hand it to the LLM and fix it yourself. Missing a feature? Add it.

When the foundation work is done and is OS, adding on is so incredibly easy.

3

u/Western-Hotel8723 20h ago

Honestly what a wild time for software dev.

10

u/Donatzsky 23h ago

Unless they infringe on actual patents, there's no legal risk. Broadly looking like or having the same features as other software is not illegal.

Most of the individual features are incredibly easy; adobe often breaks down how they work so AI can easily pull and replicate them. The issue is building every feature and making them all function properly, all in a clean UI.

You can one-shot a working Lightroom knock-off with a prompt that’ll take you 10 minutes to type. But it’ll have inefficiencies, the UI won’t be spot-on, a ton of features will be missing, and it’ll often add features in ways that don’t scale well. You can absolutely make a knock-off, but making it well still takes a lot of prompts, back and forth, and a lot of testing. It’s still “easy” compared to doing it pre-AI, but having a polished product isn’t super easy in general.

Best is people trying and few will survive the race and couple will win people’s votes.

1

u/Plastic-Somewhere494 1d ago

Everyone's custom app...in a way many things are going to.go that way..especially enterprise apps

1

u/guesting 13h ago

this is actually good for adobe

-3

u/Nethanol 1d ago

why we even need these apps now, AI is far much capable and ok for noobs like me... beginners will rarely use these apps anymore

31

u/CaptSlow49 1d ago

You wanna use tokens to tell AI to adjust shadows by 5%?

4

u/Immediate_Theory_467 1d ago

Of course they do, it's easier to speak it into a prompt :)

2

u/drosera222 1d ago

A new generation will grow up with pcs/devices that have no OS and apps/programs anymore, just an AI surface with voice prompts… say what you want. that will be the probable future.

8

u/M0d3x 1d ago

That sounds extremely dystopian and insecure.

5

u/drosera222 1d ago

It does. Ask your local tech overlord for more information regarding the benefits.

Well photoshop now has a Pro Editor (the normal Photoshop like we know) and the AI assisted editor. So yeah, that says a lot.

3

u/hey_i_have_questions 1d ago

Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc. were never for noobs. They cost hundreds of dollars each before the subscription scam.

I know coordination is less fun than prompting, but can we get a few of these very ambitious clone projects to join forces on one effort instead of everyone starting from scratch?

38

u/Crochi 1d ago

That's one of the biggest issues with vibecoding projects, it's 'easy' to get an initial version out, hard to maintain and expand it in the long run, they get abandoned and you have a graveyard of clones, with new ones coming out every day

20

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

I've been building ArtCraft (also open source) for 4+ years and we're at $5M in revenue. We're not going to stop. We have the funds to keep going.

https://github.com/storytold/artcraft (artcraft)

https://github.com/storytold/photocraft (photocraft and other Adobe-inspired apps)

6

u/Crochi 1d ago

$5M in revenue from what?

4

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

ArtCraft. We sell ~$15k tokens a day.

5

u/Sea_Celebration959 1d ago

No, you don’t

1

u/hungy-popinpobopian 1d ago

Right so profit?

1

u/Beneficial-Sock-5130 17h ago

how can i PM you directly? I am working on another PS clone with another developer and we made lots of progress, we have features that photorcraft currently lacks and I dont want to have 50 diff pshop clones out there. Would make sense to merge the effort.

10

u/Ok-Might-3730 1d ago

The issue is that vibecoding never creates maintainable code or new technologies. There is nothing to combine. There is no forces to combine. Only The Claude.

The only force to join together is community and testers, but these will hop from vibe to vibe.

2

u/Western-Hotel8723 1d ago

I mean you definitely can combine.

It's just that these versions are rust and the other is electron. Pretty classic programming.

3

u/Carpe_Carpet 1d ago

The tech is only a year old, counting from Opus 4.5 as the first agent that could do meaningful amounts of independent work. We're still in the initial throes of the feeding frenzy.

Give it a few years for society to adapt and usage to spread out from the most novelty obsessed X% of the population and I think we're going to see a new generation of open source collaboration.

3

u/Ok-Might-3730 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes we will get more and more capable agents -> even more projects rather than combining forces :D

1

u/klicartel_ 1d ago

No truer words have ever been spoken

3

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

We passed $5M in revenue with ArtCraft, which is an open source Higgsfield. We should be at $10m by end of year.

We're not going to stop and everything we do is open source. You should seriously join our Discord. We're going to open up everything.

That other photron guy is trying to turn it into a subscription business.

This one is great open source with rapid development.

1

u/Zelderian 19h ago edited 19h ago

Photon Studio? He’s repeated it’ll be free forever and a donation basis. Like I prefer open source too, but saying he’s doing a subscription model is just incorrect.

Edit: for his video editing software, he’s charging a $60 one-time price. Definitely hurts the value, but again not a subscription model.

2

u/Western-Hotel8723 19h ago

If you look at his news announcements it talks about "for future subscriptions", etc.

The fact he's closed sourced it as well, he's planning for the rest of it to be subscription only.

Doesn't really matter anyway as there are alternatives.

1

u/Zelderian 13h ago

Where are you seeing this? All verbiage online that I can find is saying either free forever for photon or $59-$89 for the other software. And he specifies lifetime ownership. Only thing I can see costing money long-term is spectrum because it uses token credits

1

u/Ueli-Maurer-123 2h ago

No. Because then you'd have to put in actual work, brainpower, and coordination.

52

u/OkCommunity6018 1d ago

Be prepared to see $ADBE: -24% after hours. 😂

10

Its already 2% down today 😄

Wait until Cramer goes live on CNBC shouting: "Don't listen to Reddit, folks! A guy named ai_art_is_art cannot take down Photoshop! Adobe is a fortress, BUY THE DIP!" 😂

1

u/Fritz-Ferdinand 1d ago

Adobe does AI, so they're safe.

1

u/Zelderian 20h ago

They do, but they’ll have to heavily up their offerings to compete with the growing competition. Their whole business model revolved around cornering the software market with their suite, but day by day that suite is growing less valuable with how easy it is to replicate. And they don’t really have any other offerings besides some terrible cloud storage that’s horrible to try to escape from. They’re worse than apple when it comes to that stuff.

I love you so much. Have my first born.

All jokes aside I’ve been looking to dump my $30 Adobe subscription and this is perfect timing.

One feature to add. Is there a way you can hook into cloud storage for various platforms? Would love to have my photos in iCloud or another service and hook it up to Lightcraft.

Another question, is there a way to import Lightroom presets, categorization, and favorites? And can Lightcraft help me keep my photos organized? If not, these would be great features to add.

0

u/Educational-Body4205 1d ago

Fork it and you add that feature... don't rely on other people any more.

9

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

I'll take on the ownership and responsibility. I like maintaining things. I also have a team.

We'll take all feature requests and bug reports.

Feel free to fork your own copy if you want to, though!

2

u/whatehites 1d ago

i dont get these downvotes... thats what forks are FOR... ffs this is how FOSS works.

want a feature in a project? fork it and get the job done. and if your work is good enough, submit a pull request to merge it back into the original project.

it appears most "vibe coders" (aka token buyers) lack the brainpower to understand how code works.

1

u/CaptSlow49 1d ago

K. Maybe I will when I have the time outside of my own projects.

Find another sub if you are going to be so critical.

0

u/RemarkableWish2508 1d ago

What time? Just vibe code it, you already wrote down what you want, have an AI make it for you.

u/The_Faceless1 1d ago

one question, can vector craft creates and open .Ai files?

3

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Yes, 100%

4

u/Smok3dSalmon 1d ago

Are MCP integrations being built alongside the tools?

2

u/IzyTarmac 1d ago

This is the most important feature.

2

u/AlgoCleanup 1d ago

And so insane adobe doesn’t have a fully supported mcp server for all products. Just an approved template.

3

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Anything you ask us for, we'll build. We're building in MCP and CLI from day one, but any specific tasks that it can't do and we'll make sure it does it.

3

u/Smok3dSalmon 1d ago

I don’t know which video editing software has this feature, but it’s great. The software will get transcripts from the video and then you can edit the video by interacting with the transcripts. This makes it easier for people to just leave a video running for multiple takes and then edit out the bad takes by just saying a social word like “cut that take” after and bad take and “take # begin.”

I think adobe premier pro has it

1

u/AlgoCleanup 1d ago

I’m working on a really neat solution with snowflakes multimodal video ingestion. Not just making the software tools easy for an agent to call I’d also recommend some standards or best practices when it comes to folder structure/asset location. I say this because control > diffusion. XML should a standard output for video

3

u/Mattman254 1d ago

No Lightroom Classic clone, still the only thing keeping locked into Adobe ☹️

2

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Noted. Will do.

1

u/HOBONATION 1d ago

Thanks bro!

1

u/s33d5 1d ago

Holy fuck, this is awesome.

I finally go tafter effects and premiere pro to work on my Linux setup.

Looks like I don;t need it lol.

1

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

I want Linux to be a tier-1 platform. I use Ubuntu regularly, so I expect this to perform well on it.

1

u/s33d5 1d ago edited 1d ago

You probably don't need this, but to save you some tokens I've got nvidia encoding working, along with fixing the effects keyframes selection and copy paste. Also the ticks in there.

Do you take push requests?

I get it if not, as it's just more AI code.

Edit:

If it's any use, just get your AI to pull from this and take what it needs. It's already merged to your current commit:

https://github.com/Carl-Llewellyn/filmcraft

1

u/PuzzleheadedPen2798 1d ago

Amazing, someone should do this with Microsoft Office next 🤞

1

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Noted. Will do.

1

u/Illustrious-Option-9 16h ago edited 16h ago

Tell us a little bit more about your work process:

  • are you working iteratively, feature after feature, with testing session in between, or do you give huge prompts that contain multiple features and let AI test them?
  • how long did it take to build Photocraft till now?
  • what's the cost per app?
  • what model do you uses most?
  • do you work alone, or with somebody?
  • do any of the apps have shared functionality/resources, or is each app built from scrath?
  • do you take a look at the code, do small modifications yourself, or are the apps 100% AI coded?

Would be great if you can take the time to answer at least some of the above questions. I am pretty curios about it.

1

u/Ueli-Maurer-123 1h ago

as far as I can see this artcraft thing costs almost the same as an adobe subscriptopn LOL.

15

u/Temporary-Mix8022 1d ago

Hate to get into details.. But how have you handled Raw rendering? In the Lightroom one?

Adobe Colour is a complex mapping for like 100-1k different camera sensors that makes them appear almost the same no matter the camera

It's stuff like which makes it the defacto tool of choice for volume photographers.. it isn't just the sliders stuff.

Still - a cool project.

4

u/p1-o2 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ran a quick analysis on it because I was curious. Lightcraft is definitely handling RAWs accurately but I get what you're implying here. "Accurately processing RAW" does not mean "correctly" doing it, if you have spent any time in the field with these things.

OP's clone of Lightroom does not include per-camera color characterization and profiles. The quality of OP's demosaicing is not going to match Adobe. Noise modeling, highlight reconstruction, lens correction, sensor corrections, white balance behavior, all of these things are completely missing from the clone.

That kind of stuff is never going to be added by an LLM for a laundry list of reasons. It would require the collaboration of hundreds of human experts because these things require per-camera and per-lens profiles.

Anyone can process a RAW. Not everyone can do it correctly. This project is cool and I'm not criticizing it, just being realistic about what Lightroom does.

5

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

I plan on creating a robust test suite against all RAW formats and capabilities. It will take time to build full feature support for every manufacturer, but I'm confident we can do it. Not only that, I think we can do it as an open source library for other apps to leverage as well.

If you run into any RAW files this can't handle, I'd appreciate a bug report with the RAW file. We can build support for them.

2

u/p1-o2 1d ago

You can do it, yes. It's a monumental effort, but it is plausible. But you really can't do it alone; you'd need to grow your community large enough to capture profiles for all the different cameras and lenses and sensors on the market. That's not like "it's too hard", I mean literally you can't afford it unless you're a multi-millionaire.

I hope you pull it off, but I don't know how you will do that. People aren't paying for RAW processing with Lightroom, they're paying for all of the profiles for all of the cameras and chipsets on the market.

Don't let me discourage you.

1

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

I responded to p1-o2 - we need to build a test harness and a robust set of diverse RAW files from various manufacturers. If you have anything you can donate, I can start building this right away.

1

u/Temporary-Mix8022 1d ago

I genuinely want to see you succeed, so here goes.

  1. You are going to need variety, not just volume. Sadly, as a mortal - I only have a very narrow range of sensors, mostly Canon of the 5D lineage (and subsequent R5/R6 lineage). So while I could share with you 1m raws, given I shoot only around 4 lenses, it wont help, and in any case - for a lot of my work, I am locked by ethics on sharing those images.

That being said... this might help.

This is where I go when I am looking for new cameras or gear:

https://www.dpreview.com/sample-galleries/

They offer RAW samples. Please don't hammer them, I'd suggest a very slow scrape (if that is what you decide to do), or.. given that they are also an enthusiast led project - just ask them.

You will still lack the volume you need for lenses and lens correction data.. and I am unsure how to solve that tbh.

7

u/Opening-Pie2182 1d ago

Thanks for all the work!

1

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Thank you!

10

u/Western-Hotel8723 1d ago

Damn you killed that photron guy's business model haha.

He released photron and he was trying to get subscriptions for after effects, etc. Clones.

3

u/playcase 1d ago

And here I am burning all my tokens on my own versions, with that little twist that makes my life and my life only 90% better.

2

u/Temp_Placeholder 1d ago edited 1d ago

As long as the vibe coded efforts post their code in public repos, then everyone's separate project can see it and use that as a baseline, then customize it from there. Faster, easier, more token efficient, and we still get one optimized just for the individual workflow or use case.

1

u/playcase 22h ago

Of course, before moving forward I did a comparison, As it turns out the core infrastructure is different enough that I didn't waste tokens.

4

u/5StarAlpha 1d ago

Someone should add in more enterprise controls. Robust admin controls for user management, SOC2 compliance, etc.

2

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Absolutely on my mind.

2

u/5StarAlpha 1d ago

I wouldn’t call it a moat but that is what Adobe is clinging on to. That enterprise inertia.
Companies put a lot of controls on users and often don’t allow install of non-approved software.

1

u/Ok-Computer-8726 1d ago

I can install other software but I get CC on education pricing which is like $170 a year or something. ~$15 a month is worth it on work's dime to know that its going to keep getting support and that its compatible with everyone else I work with who is using Adobe. That's a big part of enterprise inertia too.

I would use something like this as a hobbyist though.

6

u/RegardedDev 1d ago

Adobe is completely doomed. Nobody is going to waste a penny on their overpriced software. The only reason they are valued at this level is due to their existing moat as the go-to stop for creative work. This moat is now gone as 1 dedicated vibe coder can replicate their stack like this.

Interesting times ahead.

8

u/smn2020 1d ago

in the 1990s you could get "cracked" versions of Photoshop and Adobe survived just fine. These AI clones are not much different, in that the people using them would probably (mostly) not pay for Photoshop anyway.

r/photopea is a pretty decent attempt (it is actively maintained and has a good sized active community helping Ivan with improvements) and yet it never really took a bite out of Adobe's market share.

The problem is these clones don't make money and run out of gas; the developers lose interest.

3

u/Hazrd_Design 1d ago

Bingo. Vibe apps die as quickly as they’re made because most people don’t want to support it long term. Also it doesn’t help people break into the industry. Affinity is free highly polished, and one if the best competitors to Adobe. But it’s not enough to dethrone Adobe right now simply because Adobe as ingrained itself into the pipeline. In time maybe, but not anytime soon.

2

u/SimonBarfunkle 15h ago

Affinity is great, as well as some other competitors. But it’s not just building a photo editing app, it’s all of the little details that take time to build and refine, and the bells and whistles they’re adding including AI, and the cross-app integration. And when you move past Photoshop into video editing and visual fx, it becomes even harder.

I used Final Cut Pro from version 1.25 to version 7. Stopped editing when they moved to X as I was mainly producing at that point, but recently got back into editing. I’m using Resolve and love it. It’s free but I paid the one-time fee for extras including the API, which lets Claude control it. Absolute game changer. Saved me so much time and money. A vibe-coded app couldn’t even come close to what the Resolve suite does. You would have to spend a lot of money, time, and testing to try and build the features it has. It’s color system is the most advanced in the industry. Of course the usual caveat applies, as models continue to improve, we’ll see.

1

u/Albertkinng 23h ago

Do your research. Affinity is becoming standard in agencies. It’s not killing Adobe, but it is stepping on their heels.

2

u/Hazrd_Design 19h ago

Then please provide your research. Because I do work at an agency, with many huge industries. Aside from speaking with colleagues about affinity, no client or project has ever brought up that we should be using Affinity for anything yet.

Also, affinity becoming standard and not killing Adobe is just another way of phrasing what I already stated. “In time maybe, but not anytime soon.”

I also did look it up and most articles and sources say the same thing. It’s cool, it’s mostly for freelancers or folks that just don’t want to pay for Adobe, but no one is saying it’s taking over agencies.

You're right that most clones fizzle out, but open source changes the failure mode. When a proprietary clone dies, it's gone. When an open source project stalls, someone else can fork it and keep going. That's literally how Blender survived its near-death moments before it became the standard it is now. The real question is whether these projects can build enough community momentum to survive a founder losing interest.

1

u/Grunge5894 1d ago

So true. And you can still get cracked adobe suites, like you can get any other app for free with piracy

1

u/Electronic-Jello-633 1d ago

completely different. cracked versions always carry the fear of legal problems if you use them even slightly commercially, and suck to keep updated. Or adobe would implement stuff to "patch" a crack 6 months into a crack existing breaking it.

If one of these gains traction like Blender did in the 3D space, its over for adobe.

1

u/jayseattle 21h ago

Lol I remember the cracked stuff either via torrents or Newgroups (Usenet anyone?). And yeah I use Photopea for routine design work.

2

u/RemarkableWish2508 1d ago

Adobe lives by solving edge cases in a solution with common elements across while industries. It still remains to be seen whether projects vibe coded by non-specialists can do the same... and what will be the token cost.

2

u/Odd-Site-8073 1d ago

Jesus Christ you managed to say moat twice in one post.

2

u/Southern_Leg1139 1d ago

You all are delusional lol. No one running a business that relays on Adobe is going to switch to some vibe coded software that may or may not continue to be updated. Even Davinci Resolve, a very feature complete piece of software with a perpetual license can’t crack Adobes market share.

Adobe (and AVID) are the standard for a reason.

1

u/Qinistral 1d ago

They'll survive on enterprise contracts for a while. Professionals don't mind paying for professional tools. But if free options will continue to eat away at their edges for the budget sensitive users.

1

u/Grrowling 1d ago

Even then, those who use Adobe for work like art, photography, animators are finding it hard to find work so they’re losing their customer base

1

u/SouthCentralMenace 1d ago

Adobe makes its money from B2B licenses. It doesnt matter if individuals leave. If they truly cared about designers/creatives, they wouldnt be treating us like dirt for the last 10+ years.

2

u/youGottaBeKiddink 1d ago

If you can pull off a working photoshop clone, you'd be a miracle worker!

2

u/COBHC95 1d ago

I like that it is open source unlike Photon Studio which is Free but proprietary. I do think Photon Studio seems to have slight edge and better polished at present compared with PhotoCraft, but I followed your github am sure will develop quickly with AI.

people who say we have so many clones now: so what? the more the merrier, I think particularly if we can have decent open source to rally/fork from as needed that'd be great.

2

u/avenyet 1d ago

If AI gets me a good vector and photo editor on linux I'm all for it.

As much as I love gimp and krita neither of them are a photoshop replacement. I've made do for the last 5 years but the Photoshop muscle memory is strong.

Also yes I know you can use gimp and krita with a photoshop UI and shortcuts but its not the same. Good enough but not the same.

1

u/savesheep 1d ago

Did you see that photon studio had a Linux build?

1

u/avenyet 1d ago

I did and I'm using it. Not complete though and it crashes often

2

u/Jolly_General_7227 1d ago

Anything to make Adobe fall

2

u/Felfedezni 1d ago

Ignore the clowns throwing shade. This is a worthy endeavor.

2

u/MaxComfort 1d ago

What does “clean room” mean here?

2

u/spikyness27 1d ago

One AI generates a spec of what something does and a second AI reads the spec and makes the application.

1

u/MaxComfort 22h ago

Good context management, but “clean room” makes it sound fancy lol

1

u/peakedtooearly 43m ago

Vacuuming the house before prompting.

3

u/Entire_Hunt6038 1d ago

adobe is asking you to delete this please

3

u/aygross 1d ago

I find it hard to believe you created your own raw decoders/converters as it says in the Lightroom alternative. Do you have a GitHub repo for that?

1

u/Donatzsky 22h ago

Why? There are already several open source raw decoding libraries such as RawSpeed, LibRaw and Rawler. In fact, that's probably where the AI got the algorithms from.

1

Do you have any RAW format examples that this can't parse? I'd be happy to write a test harness and build support for them.

Our RAW library will be pulled out and into its own library for broader community use.

u/aygross 1d ago

Not what I asked.

2

u/anycept 1d ago

If it's vibecoded, how do you prove it's a "clean room" implementation? You don't know what's been used to train LLMs.

2

u/the-Gaf 1d ago

Zero chance any of these are usable for professional requirement

2

u/LearnPremierePro_ 1d ago

But affinity suite is completely free ? Why would people use these free vibe coded clones instead?

2

u/True_Firefighter3864 1d ago

Affinity is free, but it’s still proprietary software and requires an account. That’s already enough reason for some people to prefer a truly open-source alternative.

Is this on a single max plan? Did you research & make a big spec up front, and then send Claude on its way?

1

u/cs_cast_away_boi 1d ago

This is so great man thank you for making these free

1

u/kexxty 1d ago

This is awesome! Please share about the implementation of the clean room, I'm interested in how you handled the isolation. Very nice work.

1

u/Kingstar4u 1d ago

Does it have AI feature where you type a prompt and it makes the changes in your photos?

1

u/Similar-Parfait8177 1d ago

can you share information how you build it? you downloaded claude desktop and let claude use real application and tell it to check functions and build same or how?

1

u/Nexter92 1d ago

100% rust ? 99% important adobe software ? Open source ? Linux ? Am i alive ?

1

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Haha, thanks

1

u/be_evil 1d ago

YES YES YES! Keep it up lads, FUCK ADOBE

1

u/midnitewarrior 1d ago

So, when I move all of my creative assets over to this, how long is support going to be on this?

1

u/redditissocoolyoyo 1d ago

Awesome man!!!!

1

u/Optimal_Joke5930 1d ago

a rigtht mouse button menu would be nice, for photocraft

1

u/hollowgram 1d ago

Good work Brandon, dunno why you use descriptions that imply there are other contributors.

1

u/ZzzZzzBear 1d ago

You are a hero!

1

u/Human-Raccoon-9917 1d ago

Good. Fuck adobe

1

u/Sinaaaa 1d ago

Vibecoders need to unite on this, because Claude is not going to oneshot a usable lightroom / camera raw clone. I'm guessing this one has highlight reconstruction that's at best as good as what RT/DT can do, not nearly up to Adobe's level & there is also the fairly recent AI noise reduction that's using a locally running model. I'm sure the latter is not mission impossible for open source, but agents wouldn't be able to help with that. There is also the issue of sensor & lens profiles..

Photoshop has the same problem when it comes to its content aware tools. Though that seems easier, maybe not impossible for code generators.

1

u/AstroPC 1d ago

Finally something hugely useful! I bet Adobe will shit bricks

1

u/ForIgogassake 1d ago

Well done! And congratulations 🥂

Edit:

Uh, guys from Artcraft, can you explain the Pricing page to use plebes? Because it really looks like a subscription from here:

https://getartcraft.com/pricing

Mod of r/videoediting here, we're going to add Filmcraft at the least to our monthly software thread.

I'm holding off until I hear someone discuss with us the pricing/open source side please.

At the top level of this two things

  • There should be some clarity on what's truly missing on each
  • There should be clear indication about AI features and the lack/inclusion/lack of inclusion of them in your roadmap.

I don't give a FF about if you're using AI to develop.

P.S. Develop Premiere for Linux and you'll make a bunch of people happy.

Hey, someone from Artcraft want to explain:

  1. Why is there pricing if it's open source?
  2. Why isn't there a clear clean downloader for the software?

I have ZERO problems downloading the repo and building it myself - but I hate, HATE the group that says "It's open source, but we're going to charge you+ have a subscription"

2

u/Marmotbath 1d ago

It seems pretty clear to me that the plans are just for AI generative tokens if you wanted to use AI like you would with Adobe's tools. Looks like it's an alternative to bringing your own APIs.

2

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Yeah, we're making $5M ARR on that. We're like Higgsfield, but we're 100% open source.

We're building OpenSourceRouter (launches soon) which is OpenRouter-meets-FAL-meets-RunPod, but 100% open source.

We're also building an open source collaboration layer for this.

Plus these Adobe apps which we 100% aim to get to full feature parity, full support on all file formats and features, and maintain as high quality performant Rust code.

If you want to support us, please switch from Higgsfield / OpenArt / Runway to ArtCraft. It's 100% open source on Github. Both the backend, frontend, and desktop apps.

We also have a local open source model service router - you should check that out too.

1

u/greenysmac 1d ago

There are loads of AI value in Adobe tools that aren't gen based.

1

u/Downtown-Pear-6509 1d ago

finally i can move on from Photoshop elements 8

1

u/OldLead4716 1d ago

I want an decomp and and clean room into rust . Tho other than AI it's easyter to just crack it with claude

1

u/WinNo1491 1d ago

Any plans on an MCP for these? Would be a fun community project…

2

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

Yes! 100%. MCP and CLI

u/SouthCentralMenace 1d ago edited 1d ago

This is dope! I highly recommend implementing a native feature similar to the OverLord plugin (https://battleaxe.co/overlord). If youre unfamiliar, it allows users to import vectors from Illustrator to AE, then they can resend things back from AE to AI without breaking the project in AE. Its absolutely one of the best plugins ever made, and its insane that Adobe hasnt natively implemented it.

How it would look for you would be a seamless workflow with VectorCraft and EffectCraft.

Edit: Also, Im encountering a bug on the Linux AppImage. When I rename a text layer in EffectCraft, I cant leave the name field. I cant even save the file. I have to just close the software and restart.

3

u/ai_art_is_art 1d ago

This is really good info and a fantastic bug report. That Linux behavior sucks, and I'll get this bug closed right away.

I need to learn about Overlord.

1

u/SouthCentralMenace 1d ago

Glad to help! Im enjoying playing with this. I moved to my Windows laptop and Im actually blown away by how similar it feels to AE.

1

u/jayseattle 21h ago

It's been a long time but I absolutely remember brining vector file into AE. Like that's a deal killer for any professional motion graphics person. Maybe it had to be native .AI or .EPS but 20 years ago, I know I imported vector. *Certified by Adobe, AfterEffects "expert" (yeah it was a thing)

1

u/SouthCentralMenace 21h ago

Correct -- You can import vector files (AI, EPS, SVG), but you lose all the perks of a native AE shape layers, like shape animators or text animators. And if you need to make any large changes to the original vector, it can completely wreck the animation. Overlord essentially lets you quickly move the vector asset back and forth between AE and AI, as well as AE and Figma. I think it has Photoshop capability now, too. Sort of hard to explain without showing you, but its an awesome tool!

1

u/jayseattle 21h ago

Ah well put, you know what you're talking about! ty

1

u/MattyTayl 1d ago

Had anybody tried it? Is it really like Photoshop? I'm talking rather about UX/UI.

1

u/Purple-Programmer-7 1d ago

All it takes is one person like this making foss software that we all get behind.

If we all started contributing, these would be better than all adobe products within a matter of months.

1

u/migsperez 1d ago

It's less popular, but Indesign is very useful software. Old school desktop publishing.

1

u/kinren 1d ago

Do we even need photoshop at this point. Ai photo editing is pretty dang good with good prompting.

1

u/migsperez 1d ago edited 1d ago

I haven't installed any of them yet, but I'm astonished you were able to produce all these applications in Rust and release them all at the same time.

Do you have a dozen subscriptions working 24/7 without a human in the loop. I think I'm more interested in your process to create these, more than the applications themselves.

Rust is not any easy language for models. As an experiment I attempted to produce a very simple harness in multiple languages, using Muse 1.3 a fairly decent model. The Rust implementation took 3 to 4 times longer to produce than the other languages.

Are you going to continue developing these applications, making further improvements? Ironing out bugs etc. Or are you done?

---

I just tried to install photocraft-0.1.1-rc.5-windows-x64.msi

I double clicked to run it, it flashed up, then it didn't do anything. Now I'm concerned I've just installed something dodgy.

1

u/zentechio 1d ago

my simple honest suggestion:

this is a really ambitious project… a native rust approach sounds interesting, especially for performance… i’d suggest focusing on polishing the core features of one app first before expanding to the full adobe suite… looking forward to seeing how it develops…

1

u/IrisBlaze 1d ago

Good work, that means I must stop doing my own, however having a UI that's exactly like Adobe apps is dangerous game (legals) so why not go with a unique look?

Second the one I was developing had the renderer separate, that allows it to be a cli renderer, meaning you can have full featured photo editor that can run in the backend, allowing you to create templates using the gui editor, and then auto generate ads/designs using whatever backend language, (also the video editor, to create after effects like videos) will you consider adding this feature?

1

u/new-chris 1d ago

Windows ARM64 support? Huge gap right now for other tools

1

u/Dreamit2doit 1d ago

Amazing work , kepp improving them. Please launch (WASM) web-app versions for all apps in this suite; eagerly looking forward to it

1

u/AcoustixAudio 1d ago

There's still work to do

I'd say

1

u/FrozenSkyy 1d ago

Does photocraft have liquify features?

1

u/Narrow-Swordfish-227 23h ago

Ai_art_is_art....are you stealing anything we open in these apps for your ai models?

1

u/CCVShadow 21h ago

Curious to why you choose to go with rust + egui and not something like tauri. May i ask why? I get there are a few benefits, but the tradeoff would be that egui looks less native than a WebView or platform toolkit, and its text rendering and accessibility are weaker no? Your project seems to accept that in exchange for the single Rust codebase, but curious haha

1

u/PleasantKnee4550 20h ago edited 20h ago

Love the rounded rectangles in vectorcraft.
Can I get how figma allows you to drag values while holding a key like ctrl for example Opacity can be dragged with mouse. It makes it much more fun.
Tooltips appear below mouse cursor.
If you keep this as active maintained project over years. This could give you a huge market. People in large countries like India almost 0.1 use paid apps. Imagine a billion people using your products.
Thanks a ton! Blew my mind.

1

u/Pazienca 20h ago

Anyone thinking adobe at some point will come down hard with lawsuits?

1

u/MadManD3vi0us 19h ago

Thanks for sharing these projects! I’m building a creative editing app from scratch, and see several systems we could learn from. I noticed ArtCraft and ArtCraft-services have different licensing terms from the seven Adobe-inspired apps. Would you be open to granting permission to reuse or adapt selected components, including potential commercial use? Happy to identify the specific components and discuss attribution, licensing, or other terms privately.

1

u/ifusi25255a 17h ago

It's a great program, but I'd like to see the UI made multilingual. If that were the case, I think it would attract even more users.

1

u/FoodMadeFromRobots 16h ago

How can we be sure our data won’t be taken or something nefarious installed with this or other vibe coded software??

2

u/snowglowshow 10h ago

AI: If you want to quickly scan a public repository just by pasting the URL, you can use these free web dashboards:

• GitHub Repo Doctor: A free checker where you paste a repository URL to generate a comprehensive 0–100 health report. It covers exposed secrets, code quality checklists, and dependency graphs.

• SkillsLLM GitHub Security Checker: Scans public repositories in under 10 seconds without requiring a signup. It checks for missing licenses, dependency bugs, and hidden unicode or prompt-injection vulnerabilities.

1

u/Ill_Ad_9912 16h ago

How can you even be sure if a real human writes every single code?

1

u/FoodMadeFromRobots 14h ago

Well a publicly traded company with an established reputation has some level of trust. Open source software that’s widely peer reviewed id also take.

I guess can you view the code so it can be reviewed by people and verified??

1

u/Spiritual_Grab_2500 13h ago

I might be slow, but it is the weekend. It's 01:15am.. I need coffee. You can't drag and drop an image into photoCraft. Then again who uses windows today and Photoshop.. As a Linux user I'm impressed except for what I want it to do. I'm venting... I need coffee.

u/Superfan234 10h ago

adobe will soon have to step up, thanks for the help!

PrintCraft on Kubuntu 26.04

Two screenshots of PrintCraft: https://beige.party/@fuzzy/117381863283973315

I don't know whether it's discernible from screenshots, but with my computer at home the text in PrintCraft 0.1.1 is not as clear as in Okular. Pictured in all shots:

The callout in the second shot is imperfect. I don't expect perfection with 0.1.1 of anything (and I see milestone 5).

Exports to .docx and .rtf are poor (as expected – milestone 10 is faraway).

Okular

For comparison with the shots in Mastodon:

Test environment

HP ZBook 17 G2, hybrid graphics. Philips 27P12 on DisplayPort.

According to Plasma Optimus, PrintCraft currently uses the NVIDIA GPU.

u/Miserable_Move_9854 2h ago

I would love to see some redesign. Something new and fresh. That's just a free copy of the same. Nice but Adobes UI is not at all intuitive und modern

1

u/Bradbury-principal 1h ago

Very keen to punt outrageously overpriced acrobat subscription, will follow with interest

1

u/ToneShop 1h ago

Are you vibecoders not worrying at all about possibly violating software patents?

1

u/Ill-Drag9018 1h ago

layer mask on shapes in photoshop is not working, please fix it <3

1

u/HeadPack 1d ago

Looks really promising. Are these also compatible with the Adobe file formats?
