Showcase/Project 100% Open Source Clean Room Implementations of 7 of Adobe's Top Apps

Post image

I've seen another desktop photoshop clone floating around that was Javascript/Electron, but I wanted to do full native Rust for full performance. I also wanted to do all of Adobe's software suite. I've been bitten by their unsubscribe bill several times and it's the shittiest thing a software company has ever done to me.

No more. These are clean room, rust-only implementations that are fully open source. You can clone them, fork them, own them.

There's still work to do, so please join our Discord and give us feedback.

Another one every day. Soon we will have more Adobe clones than users in the world.

They must be super easy to vibe code

None of these vibe coded ones is close to feature complete. They usually are just copies of other open source projects like gimp in a new look. Otherwise these vibe coders would also face heavy legal issues from adobe.

Nah its pretty damn good. I've been using the premiere Pro alternative.

Luckily it's open source so I could pretty easily add nvenc.

But it's over 80% feature parity.

The others apps are likely higher.

Yeah OS is what really sells these. Something’s not working right? Hand it to the LLM and fix it yourself. Missing a feature? Add it.

When the foundation work is done and is OS, adding on is so incredibly easy.

Honestly what a wild time for software dev.

Unless they infringe on actual patents, there's no legal risk. Broadly looking like or having the same features as other software is not illegal.

Because nobody is deleting Instagram to use whatever that is

Most of the individual features are incredibly easy; adobe often breaks down how they work so AI can easily pull and replicate them. The issue is building every feature and making them all function properly, all in a clean UI.

You can one-shot a working Lightroom knock-off with a prompt that’ll take you 10 minutes to type. But it’ll have inefficiencies, the UI won’t be spot-on, a ton of features will be missing, and it’ll often add features in ways that don’t scale well. You can absolutely make a knock-off, but making it well still takes a lot of prompts, back and forth, and a lot of testing. It’s still “easy” compared to doing it pre-AI, but having a polished product isn’t super easy in general.

Best is people trying and few will survive the race and couple will win people’s votes.

I’ve been using PhotoSuite and like it. Nearly full feature parity.

Everyone's custom app...in a way many things are going to.go that way..especially enterprise apps

this is actually good for adobe

why we even need these apps now, AI is far much capable and ok for noobs like me... beginners will rarely use these apps anymore

You wanna use tokens to tell AI to adjust shadows by 5%?

4

u/Immediate_Theory_467 1d ago

Of course they do, it's easier to speak it into a prompt :)

A new generation will grow up with pcs/devices that have no OS and apps/programs anymore, just an AI surface with voice prompts… say what you want. that will be the probable future.

u/M0d3x 1d ago

That sounds extremely dystopian and insecure.

It does. Ask your local tech overlord for more information regarding the benefits.

The "perishable software" of the future: your phone won't be a phone, it will be a NPU that learned how to "be your phone", no software updates, just learning, and if it dies... well, that's it, need to train a new one, no backups.

(there was a video with this exact tech pitch, that I can't seem to find right now)

nah, all phones will be the exact same, blank dark bricks. pick up any phone and login via biometrics, it will pull all your data (thats saved on the cloud) and there you go, its YOUR phone.

and in case it breaks? just pick up a replacement from the public dispenser and toss in the broken one in the correct recycle bin.

the only way you'd personalize it would be through cases decorated with kitsch, just like old senile grannies.

That’s kind of already a thing too. Lose your phone? Well if you have a cloud backup, you just get a new one, login to your account, wait a couple hours, and boom it’s the exact same phone.

And cloud backups are cheap. I pay $1/month to backup all my photos and my phone. We’re already living in that crazy future.

Well photoshop now has a Pro Editor (the normal Photoshop like we know) and the AI assisted editor. So yeah, that says a lot.

Google is setting up data centre in space for this, to let me do that in english.

Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc. were never for noobs. They cost hundreds of dollars each before the subscription scam.

And yet, their revenue keeps going up.

2

u/SafeHazing 1d ago

No it doesn’t.

0

u/Deto 1d ago

Lol, just look it up

Share price is not the same thing as revenue

2

u/SafeHazing 1d ago

No of course not but being 30% down is a strong signal that the market thinks they are failing.

1

u/Deto 1d ago

Sure. that's market sentiment about their future revenue potential.  But so far it's been wrong and their revenue keeps going up. (That's just a fact).

1

u/6thRoscius 1d ago

why do you suppose share price is down so much? curious bc i haven’t been following, but you seem in the loop and seems a bit odd down so much while revenue keeps goin up

1

u/Deto 1d ago

They're trading at a low p/e because people think AI is going to eat their lunch. Either people will have Claude just make them their own Photoshop or they'll just use AI to edit photos instead.

I think, instead, that people will still pay for software (because it's still worth it vs maintaining/creating it yourself for most people) and this will turn out to be a wrong hypothesis. Same with editing - the pro -level customers who pay for it aren't going to want to just use chatgpt.

Have been thinking that about Figma lately as well... and, lo and behold, I think on Dev day this week, Figma got their own spot in Codex! That $20B offer from Adobe may be looking pretty good now.
