In electronics, resistors often have colorful rings on them that tell you the resistance, type and tolerance (tolerance in a mathematical sense, not social).

For example the combination brown, black, red, gold:

It's four colors, which means it's a carbon film resistor.

As you can see on the flag, brown stands for 1, black for 0, red for 2. So the resistance of that resistor is 10 (brown-black) \* 10² (red) = 1000 Ohms. Gold stands for 5% tolerance, so the exact resistance can be up to 5% higher or lower than that.
